Medical Lab Scientist- Core Lab
FTE: PART-TIME (0.5 FTE/ 20hrs/week)
Hours: 2pm-10:30pm Monday -Friday; Includes weekend and holiday rotations.
What you will do:
Performs patient tests, manually and with automated clinical laboratory equipment, reagents and/or test methodologies.
Reviews patient test results for accuracy and notifies appropriate clinical personnel or all critical results. Documents this notification per established protocols.
Performs quality control per established departmental protocols. Records QC appropriately and takes corrective action when QC is not within established guidelines. Documents corrective action taken.
Performs instrument checks, maintenance and troubleshooting per department protocols.
Maintains competencies in accordance with policy and procedures of the hospital and laboratory department.
Recognizes abnormal or unusual test results and makes appropriate decisions before releasing results. Notifies supervisor and pathologist if necessary.
Actively promotes patient satisfaction and customer service values with all staff members. Instructs and encourages coworkers to treat patients and customers (nurses, physicians, visitors, vendors etc.) courteously.
Participates in continuing education programs, in-services, lab meetings and various committees.
Maintains a safe work environment by using required PPE and protective devices. Handles biohazardous materials and chemicals according to established protocols.
Maintains inventory and supplies within respective departments.
Performs computer functions efficiently, manages workload and established turnaround times.
Assists in orientation and training of new employees and students.
May assist in competency assessment of moderate and high complexity testing.
Maintains a broad knowledge of all laboratory departments. May cross-train into other areas of the lab as needed.
Reads emails and responds in a timely manner.
Other projects or duties as assigned.

Job Description
The Phlebotomist/Laboratory Assistant collects patient specimens, prepares samples for testing, and enters required information into the Laboratory Information System. This role also supports reference lab testing, provides reports and information as needed, and performs assigned Point-of-Care (POC) testing.
Responsibilities include:
Performing venipuncture and collecting patient and occasional employee blood samples in accordance with safety guidelines.
Conducting waived and Point-of-Care (POC) testing, entering and verifying results in the LIS.
Processing inpatient and outpatient lab orders, collecting specimens, and ensuring accurate documentation.
Preparing, packaging, and sending specimens to reference laboratories, and scanning results into the appropriate systems.
Providing professional customer service to patients, families, physicians, and departments.
Assisting with inventory and general clerical duties.
Maintaining up-to-date phlebotomy skills, equipment knowledge, and safety practices.
Obtaining additional non-blood specimens (e.g., throat, nasopharyngeal, urine) as needed.
Remaining proficient in laboratory systems such as Athena, 4Medica, and Meditech.
Qualifications
Education: High school diploma and an approved phlebotomy program or 4-5 years relevant work experience or equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
Related Work Experience: 2 years previous pediatric phlebotomy experience preferred.
Licensure/Certification: PBT(ASCP) and/or CLPIB (NCA) programs MA certification- preferred.

Assists the Lab Administration and Lab Managers in maintaining fiscal responsibility relative to capital and operating budget, variance analysis, and trends in productivity, volume, acuity and service.
Performs all tests in accordance with standard operating procedures.
Maintains knowledge and utilizes resources to ensure compliance with federal regulations and accreditation standards (including CAP and the Joint Commission). Documents significant activities and corrective actions as necessary. Assists the Lab Manager and the appropriate Director in complying with governmental, accreditation, and Hospital standards, including the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988 (CLIA 88), CMS, OSHA, and TJC.

Job Description
Handles specialized research test processing, packaging and distribution and coordinates the appropriate handling of clinical samples from within the hospital for distribution to outside testing laboratories. Essential Job Functions:
Follows clinical laboratory procedures and policies in the performance of research and clinical processing, send out and reporting processes.
Applies scientific methods in problem solving and evaluates new methods and techniques. Assures that quality control criteria are met and adheres to established laboratory policies in handling hazardous substances.
Recognizes the clinical significance of each test performed, and reports results within established time frames.
Identifies and correlates possible sources and nature of test interference/problems, and makes appropriate recommendations as to course of action, based on test theory and knowledge.
Participates in research studies throughout the hospital. Has a complete understanding of research services in the department from scheduling to registration, research test order, processing, storage, shipping and billing.

Instructs and medical technology students, fellows, residents, new laboratory personnel, and other hospital professionals in laboratory procedures as needed.
Assists in the development and evaluation of new procedures and protocols.
Maintains knowledge and utilizes appropriate resources to provide consultative, educational, technical, and informational services as needed to families, patients, and hospital personnel.
Ensures the accuracy and completeness of results, quality control/quality assurance activities, and documentation.
Participates in competency evaluations and continuing education.
Ensures proper handling of new requests for “send-out” testing to include completion of forms and submission to appropriate Medical Director for evaluation.

Minimum Requirements:

Ability to resolve problems with the utilization of appropriate resources, to make informed decisions and handle complex inquiries in a courteous and timely manner; to work in a fast-paced, time critical department; notifies provider and/or manager when inconsistencies arise.
Demonstrate all duties with a focus on Quality practices including but not limited to: patient identification, organization of working environment, following approved protocols and participating in mandatory education, continuing education, training and competencies.
Brings forth opportunities for error reduction and error prevention and participates in developing of plans for quality monitoring and improvement including the review and maintenance of the procedure manual.
