Medical laboratory technician job in Richmond, VA
Reports to the Department Manager, Supervisor or Lead Clinical Lab Scientist and is responsible for following established policies, procedures, and regulations. Performs/assists with various clinical laboratory test procedures and ensures proper maintenance and operation of instrumentation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Works with Manager, Supervisor or Lead Clinical Lab Scientist on a variety of laboratory projects.
Participates in PI, QA, and QC to ensure all regulatory requirements maintain an ‘in compliance' status.
Functions in a charge or lead role as assigned for the days operations to ensure safe quality and efficient workflow, practices, staffing and operations.
Performs other duties as assigned.
LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
Certification as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist in all disciplines by the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP).
CPR Training required and/or must be obtained within 45 days of hire for designated job roles.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or equivalent.
Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate effectively with physicians, nursing personnel and other clinicians relative to patient testing and information gathering.
Six to twelve months of laboratory training/job experience necessary in order to become familiar with a variety of laboratory testing procedures.
Ability to resolve technical problems using standard guides and procedures. Analytical skills necessary in order to perform and interpret routine tests and recognize abnormal/critical test results.
Must be able to determine the appropriate course of action for abnormal, atypical or critical test results.
Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office and other Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) software preferred.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Laboratory service areas have work environments with frequent exposure to physical discomforts due to unpleasant odors from specimens and chemicals. Frequent exposure to infectious agents when handling hazardous material, but potential for personal harm or injury is reduced when proper safety and health precautions are followed.

**Job Description:**

Responsibilities will depend on Schnabel's workload. This is a part-time position, with flexibility in the scheduled working hours and/or days after initial training. The anticipated hours per week are 20-30 hours, but the actual hours will depend on workload. Working hours will not exceed 30 hours a week.
**Job Responsibilities:**
+ Performing geotechnical lab testing procedures (classification and strength testing) in our Soils Laboratory
+ Conducting compressive strength testing in our Materials Laboratory.
+ Calculating and reporting of test results
+ Performing cleaning and maintenance in our Laboratory.
+ Field quality control of concrete and soil placement for commercial construction projects (Optional)
Responsibilities will depend on Schnabel's workload. The successful candidate may also have the opportunity to gain field work experience in our Construction Phase, Design Phase and Environmental Services departments. Our professional staff will assist in developing a fundamental understanding of the Geotechnical Engineering industry.

Job Summary and Qualifications
SPECIFIC ELEMENTS AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Functions in the capacity of scrub tech, circulator, and monitor person for diagnostic and interventional procedures and cares for patients post procedure with an RN or LPN.
2. Assists physician with cardiac catheterization procedures and contributes to cardiac diagnosis.
3. Restocks and cleans work area to promote patient safety.
4. Responsible for all phases of the Digital Imaging system; PACS
5. Transports and assists with the setup preparation of patients.
6. Actively supports team as participant to turn over procedure room in a timely manner.
7. Actively participates in continuing education.
8. Serves as a liaison for the electrophysiology lab to promote physician, interdepartmental and intradepartmental relationships.
9. Utilizes equipment and performs special procedures competently as related to the Cath Lab Scope of Care.
10. Efficiently communicates verbal and written information, instruction or education to the patient, family members and other members of the health care team as appropriate.
11. Takes call as needed per hospital policy.
Education:
Required: Graduate of an accredited school of radiological technology or cardiovascular technology or has functioned independently as a scrub/monitor tech in the Cath Lab for minimum of 2 years. Experience:
Required: For AART, 2 years experience in radiology and/or one year clinical experience in Cath Lab and/or Special Procedures. RCIS, registry eligible CVT must have recent Cath Lab experience or clinical training from and accredited school or has functioned independently as a scrub/monitor tech in the Cath Lab for minimum of 2 years. Credentials: Preferred: ARRT or RCIS, registry eligible CVT or has functioned independently as a scrub/monitor tech in the Cath Lab for minimum of 2 years.

Effectively investigates/resolves specimen collection problems using Outstanding Specimen Report (OSR) and specimen tracking tool when appropriate.
8. Assures quality control is properly performed and logged, works within quality control limits and trends, and follows proper department procedure for corrective action.
9. Preventative maintenance and safety checks of equipment are performed and documented according to schedule.

CERTIFICATION
Required- Successful completion of registry within 12 months of hire for anyone with a hire date of or after 1.1.2005. Continuing education to maintain registry/licensure as required. ASCP or AMT accepted.
Acceptable - Registry/Licensure in a specialty area will be considered.
Preferred- ASCP/AMT/NCA/HEW. Continuing education to maintain registry/licensure as required.
