As a Microbiological Lab Analyst, you will play a vital role in ensuring the integrity and safety of food, beverage, and environmental samples through meticulous testing and analysis. Your work will support our clients by providing accurate data and insights.
Responsibilities
+ Receive, log, and label incoming samples following chain-of-custody procedures.
+ Verify sample integrity and storage conditions upon arrival.
+ Perform qualitative and quantitative testing for pathogens and indicator organisms using qPCR or ELFA technologies.
+ Assist in conducting shelf-life studies, challenge studies, and environmental monitoring analyses.

Essential Skills

+ Experience in microbiology testing on food, with 1 to 2 years of experience with a degree or 4 to 5 years without a degree.

Work Environment
You will work in a small microbiology testing lab focused on generating data for clients. The work environment is relaxed but can fluctuate with client demands. This position is responsible for providing services of both a technical and non-technical nature in the laboratory service areas. Works with considerable independence to perform routine and complex laboratory tests in all assigned departments of the clinical laboratory to provide physicians with rapid and accurate laboratory test results. Assesses acceptability of specimens for analysis and maintains integrity of the specimens throughout the entire testing process.
Performs set up on all laboratory equipment, instruments and apparatus required for specific laboratory testing. Performs routine cleaning and preventative maintenance to ensure continued functioning of equipment. Documents all maintenance procedures performed in a timely and accurate manner.
Operates all laboratory equipment per standard operating procedures to ensure accurate patient test results.
Performs moderately complex troubleshooting, repair, and modification of a wide range of complex instrumentation in assigned laboratory areas.
Performs calibration procedures on instrumentation per departmental procedures in an accurate and timely manner.
Adheres to the established quality control policies and procedures in order to guarantee the reliability of data.
Informs the appropriate supervisor or designee of unusual or unexpected test results after verification and accessing validity of the original test results.
Recognizes critical and /or life-threatening results and notifies the appropriate clinical personnel per hospital policy.
Resolves and documents procedural problems encountered in the daily workload; notifies the supervisor of unusual or recurring problems.

Summary
The Medical Laboratory Scientist II, in their role as Testing Personnel as defined by CLIA, may perform waived and non-waived testing. Under general supervision, carries out all policies and performs all tests in accordance with the department's standard operating procedures. Works independently in an efficient and organized manner to assure accurate results and records. The work requires a professional level of knowledge to read and interpret accurately test results used by providers in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. The Medical Laboratory Scientist II, in their role as General Supervisor as defined by CLIA, may be delegated the responsibility of the day-to-day supervision or oversight of the laboratory operations and personnel performing testing and reporting results. Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager and Clinical Supervisors, the Medical Laboratory Scientist II is responsible for supervision of assigned workstations including Quality Control (QC) review, training, competency assessment of staff and inventory management. The testing personnel are responsible for specimen processing, test performance and for reporting test results. Each individual performs only those tests that are authorized by the laboratory director and require a degree of skill commensurate with the individual's education, training or experience, and technical abilities.
Essential Functions
As outlined by CLIA, after successful completion of orientation, training and competency assessment on all instruments/methods applicable to their role-
* 1. Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results;
* 2. Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples;
* 3. Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed;

The position will be a non-tenure track, clinical faculty position at the rank of Associate or Full Clinical Professor. The appointment includes directing the CVMDL and contributing to departmental teaching.
The CVMDL is a nationally recognized veterinary diagnostic laboratory located on the UConn Storrs campus. It is accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians - the only veterinary diagnostic laboratory in New England with this accreditation - which certifies the laboratory's quality and competence through a rigorous Quality Management System. The CVMDL is a member of national and regional laboratory groups, including the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN), the Veterinary Laboratory Investigation and Response Network (Vet-LiRN), and the New England Wildlife Disease Cooperative (NWDC), and is a National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP) authorized laboratory. The Diagnostic Testing Services (DTS) section within the CVMDL manages the coordination and delivery of routine and specialized diagnostic tests.
The CVMDL holds a Level 2 NAHLN status and handles over 90,000 diagnostic specimens and more than 2,000 pathology cases annually. These pathology cases are diverse, encompassing specimens from livestock, companion animals, zoos, aquariums, wildlife, and laboratory animal species.
In recent years, CVMDL has made significant investments exceeding $2 million in facility and equipment upgrades. These enhancements include improvements to the Histology and Necropsy units, the addition of a Next Generation Sequencing laboratory, expanded capacity in the Molecular Diagnostics section, and the incorporation of a Bruker MALDI-TOF system in the Microbiology section.
The CVMDL provides high-quality diagnostic services to clients including veterinarians, members of the agricultural industry, owners of companion, zoo, and aquatic animals, stewards of Connecticut wildlife, and residents of Connecticut, New England, and beyond. The CVMDL strives to work cooperatively with federal and state veterinary agencies to enhance disease surveillance and response. The successful candidate will provide dynamic leadership to the CVMDL, engage key stakeholders, including federal and state agencies, develop new programmatic initiatives, and expand its partnerships and collaborations within the Department, University, State and beyond. In This Role:
You will be using automated analyzers, microscopes, and other laboratory diagnostic tools to perform analyses and tests that diagnose animal illnesses, injuries, and diseases in support of the scientific community.
You will be performing diagnostic tests on blood samples that we receive in our lab by the hundreds every day.
You will be responsible for setting up and running lab tests and reading and releasing results according to SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures).
You can expect to specialize in one or more of the following areas:
Hematology
: Testing cell-related components of blood samples to enumerate and identify their cellular components, including the microscopic evaluation of blood smears and the use of automated and manual counting techniques.
Chemistry / Endocrinology
: Testing blood and body fluids for various analytes, utilizing automated instrumentation.
Urinalysis
: Analysis and evaluation of chemical and microscopic components of urine samples, using automated instrumentation and manual techniques.
What You'll Need To Succeed:
You will have experience working in a laboratory.
Experience setting up, running, and reading lab test and operating laboratory equipment (microscopes and / or clinical diagnostic analyzers), and micro - pipetting skills is a must
Candidates must have Hematology and Chemistry background/skillset
You possess a 4 - year degree in a Science-related field
You have a positive attitude and love to bring that energy into the lab every day to support your colleagues

You concentrate on the details and can work reliably and precisely
You have a great sense of team spirit and responsibility
Able to meet the physical requirements that go with working in a lab - standing and sitting for extended periods of time, phone & computer use, extended reach, lifting up to 50lb, and specific vision ability - close, color, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
This is a laboratory, so there is potential exposure to biohazards, agents known to cause zoonotic diseases, and hazardous chemicals.
