We are seeking an Intern - Applied Biosciences Laboratory Support, Technical Year Round

As an Applied Biosciences Laboratory Support Intern, you will work throughout the academic year (up to full time during the summer and part-time during the school year) to help the research and laboratory staff with routine activities. You will work as a laboratory assistant for the Applied Biosciences Laboratory (ABL) and will have the opportunity to support a diverse group of researchers involved in a wide variety of research activities.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Autoclave biological waste

+ Assist with maintaining the ABL stockroom

+ Help organize and maintain lab spaces throughout ABL

+ Help staff set up and move equipment

+ Support research activities as needed, such as preparing commonly used solutions and media for the laboratory staff

Department Description:

Biotechnology and Bioengineering Department, located in Livermore, and Emeryville, CA, performs both basic and applied biological and bioengineering research with broad applications in national security. We address problems such as biodefense and health security, developing advanced technology including micro- and nanofluidics and engineered automated systems, and new research approaches which include gene-editing and novel nanomaterials. We also address national energy security by developing the science and engineering required to be able to produce clean, efficient, and cost-effective biofuels, specialty chemicals and polymers on a commercial scale. This work is carried out in partnership with the Department of Energy's Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) as well as other external academic and commercial partners. The department is highly multidisciplinary and is comprised of researchers with expertise in many disciplines of biology, chemistry and engineering.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Medical Lab Tech

Performs laboratory tests of moderate and high complexity and prepares records of test results. Maintains instruments, equipment, and supplies.
Essential Responsibilities:

Prepares and calibrates test instruments and equipment to assure accuracy of tests.Prepares specimens and performs laboratory tests of moderate and high complexity as defined in laboratory procedures manual.Discusses unexpected or unreasonable test results to supervisor.Reports the results of each test and related test data by entering information in computer database.Prepares, distributes, and files forms and reports.Cleans instruments and equipment as needed following each test.Performs maintenance and minor repairs to instruments and equipment.Recognizes equipment malfunctions and notifies appropriate personnel.Assists newly assigned staff to learn laboratory procedures.Performs other related duties as directed.

Week 1: Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Sat Week 2: Sun, Mon, Wed, Thu, Fri

Sat/Sun hours 1:00pm - 9:30pm

Basic Qualifications:


* Minimum two (2) years of current experience in a clinical laboratory or in related field required.
* Per the National Agreement, current KP Coalition employees have this experience requirement waived.


* Associate degree in chemical, physical or biological science or medical laboratory technology or successfully completed an official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration and have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician) required.
* Proper documentation for applicable degree is required (i.e. copies of diplomas, transcripts, or International Degree Equivalency Report). Major must be clearly stated on the document. If diploma does not indicate the major, an additional document that states major is required.

License, Certification, Registration

* MLT (ASCP) certification from either the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) or American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB) required.

Additional Requirements:

* Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.

Our Medical Lab Technicians (MLT) perform assigned laboratory tests in specialty departments to include Hematology, Clinical Chemistry, Blood Bank, Serology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, and Microbiology. By conducting laboratory tests and procedures, you will help to provide data for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.

* Day-to-day duties include complex analysis of microscopic, immunologic, biologic, bacteriologic, hematologic, and chemical tests and their results.
* You will also be responsible for specimen receiving and putting away supplies when received in the department.
* You will troubleshoot/resolve instrument problems and document corrective action in appropriate log and when necessary, perform instrumentation repairs.
* Assure that quality control is properly performed and logged and follow proper department procedure for corrective action.
* Demonstrate the knowledge and skills to train new employees and/or students.
* You will actively participate in phlebotomy and the accession responsibilities.
