Position Summary
Located on Mahoning Rd., in Canton , OH, the Madge Youtz Branch of The Stark Library System is seeking a full-time (40 hours/week) Children's Specialist to inspire children from birth to age 10 through engaging programs both inside the library and out in the community at day cares, schools, and summer programs. The ideal candidate will maintain our established programming schedule-ensuring the quality and consistency patrons value-while creating fresh, responsive programs that meet the evolving needs of the neighborhood. This role also includes clerical support at the circulation and business desks, helping ensure smooth daily operations, and may involve assisting or acting as a backup for internal or external events outside the focus area. T his position requires working two evenings per week and a rotating Friday/Saturday schedule . Experience teaching children or working in a day care setting is helpful. Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
The library environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of offices, which includes the need for general safe workplace practices with office equipment and computers, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire regulations. When this position is within the Mobiles Services department work performed on vehicles (e.g., bookmobiles) is done in close quarters that, at times, may be in motion as teams travel from stop to stop. Additionally, this work is done year-round in vehicles furnished with heat and air conditioning.
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
This position is performed mainly in the public and office areas of the Library although some off-site meetings in various other locations may occur (e.g., school visits, etc.). When this position is within the Mobile Services department it is performed mainly in the mobile services vehicles as well as public and office areas of the Library although some off-site meetings in various other locations may occur.
Work is generally completed during Library days and hours of operations which may vary by location and time of year. There may be the occasional need to attend meetings or events and/or respond to critical situations outside of this schedule, including before or after normal Library days and hours of operation.
Work requires the ability to lift light objects [less than 20 pounds] and carry them short distances [20 feet or less] and, within Mobile Services particularly, load/unload materials and equipment in all weather conditions.
Work requires the ability to push a fully loaded book cart (typically weighing at least 20lbs or more) for distances of at least 20 feet.
This position may require an employee to remain in a standing or seated position for extended periods of time while performing a variety of tasks.
Employees must be able to perform repetitive hand, arm, and body movements, including typing and/or lifting books, on a continuous basis.
Work requires reaching overhead and bending/kneeling to shelve books weighing up to three pounds.
Travel by personal automobile or, in the case of Mobile Services positions, a Library-owned automobile or truck, and a valid State of Ohio driver's license along with the ability to maintain a driving record that is satisfactory to the Library's liability insurance carrier may be required, depending on the position's specific duties. POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Acquisitions and Resource Access Specialist (a Librarian Technician 3 position) is responsible for the purchasing of physical and online information resources for the library and facilitating access to these resources through copy cataloging and other methods of providing access to resources. It is a full-time position that reports to the Collection Development Librarian and coordinates closely with cataloging and other library staff.
This position is primarily responsible for ordering, receiving, and paying for books, journals, electronic resources, videos, and other materials for the library's collections, utilizing a subsystem of the library services platform as well as the university's automated accounting system. This position is also responsible for ensuring that print and electronic resources are findable for students and other patrons through our library platforms. This includes copy cataloging as well as activating and otherwise providing access to electronic resources. The Acquisitions and Resource Access Specialist works closely with the Cataloging and Open Access Specialist in overseeing the general day-to-day operations of technical services.
The position performs specialized technical and administrative duties that require a high level of non-routine decision-making, judgment, and independence, advanced/specialized technical service expertise, and a library-wide perspective of procedures and services.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelors degree plus two years of current (within 5 years) experience in a Library; OR, 4 years of current library experience; AND, advanced proficiency in multiple library specific computer applications, e.g., integrated library systems, database applications, institutional repository; content management systems.
Some positions may also require in-depth knowledge of specialty area(s), e.g., original cataloging, complex copy cataloging, serials management, ILL management, government documents, image resources, music.

Executes a variety of technical and administrative tasks facilitating the purchase of library materials including books, films, electronic resources, and other formats.
Monitors and renews print periodicals and electronic resources, ensuring that invoices remain within budget.
Resolves ordering, receiving, and processing issues, including claiming and/or replacing lost or defective materials, including missing periodicals issues.
Tracks fund balances, generates monthly and annual financial reports, and performs fiscal close duties in the integrated library system.
Configures and maintains ILS/Vendor System acquisitions-related instances and integrations.
(35%) Cataloging and Electronic Resource Access:
Performs MARC copy cataloging compliant with RDA and ISBD standards for physical items (books, videos, etc.) acquired as purchases or gifts by Hannon Library.
Catalogs using the OCLC Connexion interface and the Orbis Cascade integrated library system.
Applies Library of Congress (LC) call numbers, or the Dewey Decimal System when appropriate.
Compiles and supplies cataloging data for monthly and annual statistics.
Coordinates with Cataloging & Open Access Specialist for canceled serials so that holdings can be updated when last issue arrives.
Adds, removes, or updates electronic resources (including databases, ejournals, and ebooks) in library systems, including the ILS and LibGuides.
Activates individual and batch ebook purchases and tests to ensure access.
Assists in tracking compliance with accessibility standards.
(20%) Statistics, Administration and Management:
Annually collects and reports usage statistics from all of our electronic resource vendors.
Collects snapshot statistics on the number of databases, ejournals, ebooks, and streaming services.
Collects data and statistics relating to the acquisition and usage of print periodicals.
Performs regular tasks and special projects involving data collection, extraction, analysis, and reporting for acquisitions-related information.
Creates the annual valuation report that is submitted to Business Services.
Attends Budget Committee meetings to share acquisitions information and facilitates departmental efficiencies.
Attends library and university meetings as needed.
Creates and updates relevant documentation and training materials as appropriate.
Assist in other areas of the library as needed.

(10%) Binding and Receiving Donations:
Prepares serials, monographs, theses for shipment to the commercial bindery.
Communicates with students who are submitting theses and projects for binding.
Enters and updates data in the ABLE database.

Responsibilities:
Interacts directly with library users of all ages at the circulation and reference desks. Uses the library automated circulation system to circulate materials and perform a variety of clerical tasks. Answers library users' reference and reader's advisory questions in person and on the telephone, using materials in a variety of formats (i.e., books, databases, periodicals, newspapers, and indexes) including the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) and the Internet. Maintains a working knowledge of the materials collections, services, and trends in library services. Shelves materials as necessary.
Qualifications:
High school degree with three years of relevant experience.
Is skilled in using technology, computers, and software applications, including Microsoft Office products, and troubleshooting equipment issues. Is familiar with electronic resources to aid in reference and reader's advisory assistance, programming, statistical reports, and communication. Learns new skills as they develop or are implemented.
Must be able to work evenings and weekends.
Establishes and maintains an excellent working relationship with library staff in all departments, library guests, with volunteers, and within work groups, respectful of diversity and all ages.
Applicant must also be able to pass a background check.
Rate: Minimum $14.00 per hour
Pay Grade 3, non-exempt
20 hours/week
Operating Hours:
Monday: 10:00 AM-8:00 PM
Tuesday: 12:00 PM-8:00 PM
Wednesday-Thursday: 10:00 AM-6:00 PM
Friday-Saturday: 9:00 AM-5:00 PM
Sunday: Closed
