What Does A Medical Supply Technician Do At Veteran Health Administration

* The Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) is assigned to Sterile Processing Service
* Patient Care Services at the Louis A.
* Johnson VA Medical Center.
* The Sterile Processing Service (SPS) is the central point for the reprocessing and storage of reusable medical and surgical items, including instruments, procedures trays and equipment.
* Selectee will be required to perform duties in all areas of the SPS department to accomplish daily workload, including routine rotations through all assignments in the SPS.
* Duties include, but are notlimited to:
* Clean Reusable Medical Equipment/RME by removing gross bio-burden by manual washing, rinsing, and placing in an ultrasonic cleaner.
* Work with a variety of surgical instrumentation including assembling of packages, wraps, sterilized Reusable Medical Equipment/RME.
* Perform high level disinfection/HLD of endoscopes and accessories.
* Receive, store, and distribute clean Reusable Medical Equipment/RME to wards, clinics, and OR’s.
* Operate a variety of equipment such as ultrasonic cleaners, washer disinfectors, automated endoscope re-processors, steam sterilizers, gas sterilizers and endoscope reprocessing units.
* Remove and inspect items from sterilizers for indications of exposure to sterilizing conditions.
* Disassemble Reusable Medical Equipment/RME to include surgical instrumentation, operatory equipment, and endoscopes
* Sort items to preserve sterile conditions and retrieve used equipment processed by SPS.
* Inspect packaging to protect points, cutting edges, and delicate instruments to ensure effective penetration of sterilizing medium.

What Does A Medical Supply Technician Do At Department of Veterans Affairs

* Duties are performed in the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) at Central Texas Veterans Health Care System, Temple, Texas.
* Receives, disassembles and inspects for damage critical and semi-critical reusable medical instruments and equipment.
* Determines correct method for reprocessing for flexible/rigid endoscopes and other medical reusable instruments in accordance to the SPS Standard Operations Process (SOP) and with the manufacturer's written recommendation.
* Removes soil, blood, tissue fragments, body fluids and other gross contaminants by wiping, soaking, rinsing, scrubbing, and using washer/disinfectors and ultrasonic cleaners.
* Loads and operates sterilizers for sterilization.
* Reassembles reusable medical equipment, including such complex equipment as dermatomes, surgical drills, and orthopedic specialty implant instrument trays, micro eye surgical instrument trays and other reusable medical equipment to support the surgical program.
* Conducts on-the-job in-service orientation and training to other medical supply technicians in decontamination and sterilization theory and techniques.
* Examines items to insure that gross contamination has been removed.
* Assembles trays and sets by selecting appropriate sterilizing tray or pan Selects correct sterilizing medium and cycles.
* Operates sterilizer monitoring all dials, gauges and graphs during the sterilizing cycle to assure parameters have been met for sterilization.
* Periodically monitors operation of sterilizers with prescribed tests.
* Maintains all documentation, adheres to standard operating procedures.
* Receives sterilized trays, sets and equipment from the sterilizer, exercises quality control to assure effective cleaning, product sterility, proper control numbering.
* Assembles individual case carts in priority time sequences and assures that necessary medical supplies and OR surgical instruments comply with designated surgical case.
* Stocks shelves with reusable medical equipment.
* Advises medical personnel on availability of supplies, possible substitutes and effective use of equipment.
* Disassembles reusable medical equipment, removes gross contamination from the component parts, reassembles equipment, and checks its functioning.
* Performs minor preventive and operator maintenance on the equipment.
* Utilizes personal protective equipment and adheres to dress codes in performance of duties

* Is authorized to transport and deliver legend drugs, non-prescription drugs, contrast media and drug containing devices relative to core competencies of the position
