Medical Lab Scientist- Core Lab
FTE: PART-TIME (0.5 FTE/ 20hrs/week)
Hours: 2pm-10:30pm Monday -Friday; Includes weekend and holiday rotations.
What you will do:
Performs patient tests, manually and with automated clinical laboratory equipment, reagents and/or test methodologies.
Reviews patient test results for accuracy and notifies appropriate clinical personnel or all critical results. Documents this notification per established protocols.
Performs quality control per established departmental protocols. Records QC appropriately and takes corrective action when QC is not within established guidelines. Documents corrective action taken.
Performs instrument checks, maintenance and troubleshooting per department protocols.
Maintains competencies in accordance with policy and procedures of the hospital and laboratory department.
Recognizes abnormal or unusual test results and makes appropriate decisions before releasing results. Notifies supervisor and pathologist if necessary.
Actively promotes patient satisfaction and customer service values with all staff members. Instructs and encourages coworkers to treat patients and customers (nurses, physicians, visitors, vendors etc.) courteously.
Participates in continuing education programs, in-services, lab meetings and various committees.
Maintains a safe work environment by using required PPE and protective devices. Handles biohazardous materials and chemicals according to established protocols.
Maintains inventory and supplies within respective departments.
Performs computer functions efficiently, manages workload and established turnaround times.
Assists in orientation and training of new employees and students.
May assist in competency assessment of moderate and high complexity testing.
Maintains a broad knowledge of all laboratory departments. May cross-train into other areas of the lab as needed.
Reads emails and responds in a timely manner.
Other projects or duties as assigned.

General Summary:
Under the direction of the Lab Manager and the appropriate Director, the Coordinator has the authority and accountability for facilitating the delivery of quality service in the laboratory. Performs tasks as MedicalTechnologist, oversees daily operations and supervises staff assigned to the shift. Serves as a technical expert and resource person and provides a timely communication link between staff and leadership.
Essential Job Functions:
Coordinates all pre-analytical activities in the laboratory during the assigned shift.
Contributes to and participates in team and individual efforts to improve the quality of service through root cause analysis and leading process improvement activities.
Maintains a quality management system in accordance with the Lurie Children's and Medical Center quality measurement and improvement plan.
Facilitate drop offs from external locations.
Coordinates the education and training in Lab Receiving & Processing including external laboratory technologists and satellites on Receiving and Processing competencies.
Monitors productivity and ensures appropriate turn-around-times.
Maintains knowledge and utilizes resources to provide consultative, educational, technical and informational services as needed, to families, patients and staff.
Assists the Lab Manager and the appropriate Director with staff recruitment, job performance monitoring, evaluation and documentation in accordance with accreditation standards.
Ensures that inter and intradepartmental communications and/or coordination is accomplished where needed.
Takes primary responsibility for the development and evaluation of new procedures and protocols related to quality. Assists the Laboratory Manager in coordinating the preparation, review, and revision of laboratory manuals.
Coordinates/ participates in development competency testing and continuing education.
Oversees Inventory management, including evaluation of new products and recommendations for quality and cost effective alternatives.
Assists the Lab Administration and Lab Managers in maintaining fiscal responsibility relative to capital and operating budget, variance analysis, and trends in productivity, volume, acuity and service.
Performs all tests in accordance with standard operating procedures.
Maintains knowledge and utilizes resources to ensure compliance with federal regulations and accreditation standards (including CAP and the Joint Commission). Documents significant activities and corrective actions as necessary. Assists the Lab Manager and the appropriate Director in complying with governmental, accreditation, and Hospital standards, including the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988 (CLIA 88), CMS, OSHA, and TJC.
Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree, or Masters preferred in a biological or medical science;
Five years minimum laboratory experience and MT (ASCP) certification required
Ability to problem solve, appropriately confront, and resolve issues.

Advanced competency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Key Responsibilities:
This role is responsible for the efficient and quality execution of sample accessioning, processing and data generation for the Laboratory. Timely completion of training assigned by management or laboratory director to meet the needs of laboratory operations

CLIA QUALIFICATION FOR TESTING:
Employees in this job classification are qualified to perform moderate and high complexity testing. Employees' education and/or laboratory experience meet the requirements delineated in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment of 1996.
Physical Demands:
Able to work in fast pace, often stressful, computerized environment. Able to lift 20 lbs and perform repetitive motions. Works in laboratory with exposure to potentially infectious and hazardous materials.

* Demonstrates proficiency in all duties as defined in the role of MedicalTechnologist I.
* Demonstrates proficiency in identifying and resolving process issues that affect the laboratory's ability to perform laboratory testing
* Acts as a resource for identifying and solving quality control issues and escalating these when appropriate.
* Demonstrates troubleshooting proficiency and therefore rarely needs to seek additional help.
* Required to prepare and present a minimum of 15 minutes of continuing education within the department.
* Required to identify and participate in process improvement projects.
* Ensures that sufficient reagents and supplies necessary for test performance are available. Notifies supervisory staff when minimum inventory level is encountered.
* Serves as an educator and trainer for students and new employees
* Recognizes when changes in the workflow are needed by adjusting work to incorporate STAT tests or fluctuations in work volume
* Serves as the owner of a test or process to ensure performance excels minimum quality requirements
Job Components
Performs Laboratory Testing
Utilizes required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as defined by the lab area. Labels and processes specimens properly. Performs all laboratory procedures efficiently and effectively with minimal supervision once trained. All testing must be done following Rush-approved Policies and Procedures. Acts as a technical resource for the testing area.
Quality Control and Preventative Maintenance
Performs required quality control (QC) procedures and preventative maintenance, including corrective action and documentation, for all procedures and instrumentation. Recognizes QC problems or discrepancies and attempts to determine the cause of the problem. Notifies the appropriate supervisor or designee regarding QC problems or discrepancies according to the established procedure. Acts as a resource for identifying and solving quality control issues and escalating these when appropriate.
Troubleshooting
Performs basic and advanced troubleshooting of equipment and processes with minimal assistance, documents action and notifies appropriate personnel, for example, supervisors, of problems all of the time. Demonstrates troubleshooting proficiency and therefore rarely needs to seek additional help.
Organization of Work Area
Keeps work area neat, clean, organized, and well-stocked at all times. Disinfect area at the beginning and end of each shift.
Specimen Acceptability
Accepts no inappropriate specimens. Notifies the appropriate person of specimens that must be drawn or collected again and documents the notification.
Turnaround Time Expectations
Meets turnaround time expectations by prioritizing and organizing the workload for the shift. Monitors the pending list periodically to ensure turnaround time of all samples.
Time Management
Utilizes time effectively and seeks out additional job duties when shift tasks are complete. Completes work without incurring overtime. Assists fellow workers in finishing shift tasks. Adheres to the defined allotted time for breaks and lunch
Continuing Education
Required to obtain and document 12 hours of laboratory continuing education per year. Required to prepare and present a minimum if 15 minutes of continuing education within the department.
Special Projects
Accepts and/or volunteers for method evaluations and new procedure development or other special projects and completes them within an agreed-upon time frame. Participates in procedure implementation and training of new staff and students. Required to identify and participate in process improvement project
Tech-in-Charge
Required to perform the duties of the tech-in-charge for specified periods. Oversee operations according to departmental guidelines. Understands when to defer issues to appropriate personnel, for example, a supervisor or director, and does so.
Report Reviewing and Results Reporting
Reviews lab results as required and takes appropriate action before verification and release. Recognizes and calls critical results within defined time frames. Reviews paper-generated results and transcribes them accurately into the Lab Information System
