Job Responsibilities:
Perform all paperwork, technical, and non-technical procedures required to process and submit specimens.
Assign specific computer generated identification numbers, checks for accuracy, and record all items processed.
Learn and keep familiar with lab procedures and location of stored specimens.
Know how to maintain, properly use and troubleshoot instrumentation.
Know how to properly use all laboratory equipment such as automation machines, centrifuge, pipettes, fume hood, LIS and any other equipment located in the laboratory.
Comply with all QC/QA procedures as outlined in Policy & Procedure documentation.
Prepare solutions and standards per Procedure documentation located in the laboratory.
Know how to certify data (review and quantify data) that is generated from an instrument and understand how to troubleshoot data when it does not meet criteria listed in Policy & Procedure documentation.

Job Details
The Histotechnician/Histotechnologist performs laboratory tissue testing according to established procedures and protocols. The Histotechnician/Histotechnologist receives, processes, and prepares tissue samples for diagnosis using such procedures as embedding, microtomy, staining, cover-slipping, Immunohistochemistry and special stains. The Histotechnician/Histotechnologist may also specialize in a given laboratory discipline(s), and works effectively as a team member within the department and with other departments to provide quality service through communication, cooperation, and collaboration.

Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.
Performs histological procedures including embedding, cutting, and staining surgical, biopsy and anatomical tissues for light and fluorescent microscopic slide review. Recognizes deviation from expected results and analyzes and corrects problems within established periods to expedite diagnosis.
Maintains reagents and equipment in proper quantities and condition. Records instrument maintenance troubleshoots where necessary to insure accurate generation of test results.
Uses computer equipment to receive and validate laboratory orders to record and transmit test data efficiently.
Analyzes and records QC data with appropriate follow-up. May implement corrective action after consultation with supervisory personnel to verify accuracy and precision of instruments and staining quality
Communicates with clinical staff about specimen submission requirements to answer inquiries about test results and methodology to keep medical staff knowledgeable of laboratory functions.
Participates in orientation and training of new employees and students, hospital and laboratory in-service and continuing education programs and mandated annual proficiency testing to ensure currency of job knowledge and technical competency.
Performs other duties as assigned by lead, supervisor, or manager.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Education: Associate's degree in related life science or applied science field OR HEW/HHS or HT(ASCP) certification with laboratory experience in lieu of a degree AND Experience: 1-2 years' previous experience preferred; student training accepted. HT (ASCP) or equivalent preferred.

Essential Functions:
Unpack specimen deliveries
Properly count/compare the courier & field service technician specimens to route sheets
Correctly identify all necessary information on a test requisition form
Match information on the test requisition with information on the collection vial for accuracy
Identify correct documentation and procedures for missing or discrepant information
Demonstrate proper use of dMDL
Properly collate all paperwork received with specimen including requisition, checks, credit card forms, insurance card copies and prescriptions
Demonstrate proper use of MDL test codes and panels
Accession multiple types of specimens including blood, urine, swabs, CSF, synovial fluid, ticks, biopsies, etc.
Take pictures of specimen vial/container for QC purposes
Print labels and affix to specimen, requisition forms and accompanying documentation
Sort and prepare all paperwork for scanning; scan all paperwork
Sort samples in ascending order, as well as set up samples according to an XG sheet
Properly locate a sample requested by the clinical lab, quality control, or the SRC department
Complete any paperwork from QC/SRC
Archive and file all paperwork
Demonstrate proper use of a Sample Scan 96
Print labels for plates, preparing them to be scanned
Take temperatures of the clinical lab
Record data and organize documentation
Organize and maintain lab storage, samples and specimens
Prepare equipment and work space
Sanitize and sterilize equipment and workspace
Perform routine equipment preventative maintenance and thermometer calibrations; record data and results and report results and variations to supervisor
Prepare and aliquot reagents; make master-mix
Pour microbiology plates and perform sterility and growth promotion testing
Perform clerical and administrative duties as needed
