Job Description

Consistently follows patient care, and facility guidelines and procedures in performance.
Collaborates with inter and intraprofessional colleagues to ensure quality outcomes.
Communicates liaisons, instructs, and dialogs appropriately with health care providers, patients, and vendors on issues such as test interpretation, recommendations for alternate testing, instrumentation and problems with specimens/methodology.
Pursues solutions to technical or personnel problems and communicates to appropriate person.
Uses professional judgment and critical thinking to prepare, prioritize, and execute the patient's plan of care consistent with patient assessment data, physicians' treatment plans, and professional standards of care.
Implements measures to prevent exposure to infectious pathogens and communicable conditions.
Identifies risks and hazards to patients through various risk assessments, with actions taken to mitigate patient harm.

Monitors, operates, troubleshoots, and performs quality control, calibration, and maintenance on instrumentation in assigned area.
Identifies, documents, and takes corrective actions whenever test systems are outside designated parameters.

Performs and documents proficiency testing in the same manner as patient samples.

MINIMUM REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEGE:
One of the following certifications is required for MedicalTechnologist: CLS (NCA), MLS (ASCP), MT (ASCP), or MT (AMT)
Recent graduates from approved program within the last 6 months must be certified within 12 months after hire.
For ASCP certification after 2004 must maintain active credential status to maintain employment.
For AMT certification must maintain active credential status to maintain employment.
Completion of an Associates (2-year degree) or Bachelors (4-year degree) in Biology or closely related science and successful completion of a CAAHEP approved program in Medical Technology
Technical, critical thinking and interpersonal skills relevant to area in order to effectively communicate with physicians, health team members, and patients and their families.
Ability to prioritize work with minimal supervision in order to independently carry out the duties of the position.
Able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Basic computer knowledge; LIS and HIS.
Ability to perform routine and specialized laboratory procedures.
Ability to work under stress in order to perform effectively in the position.
Demonstrates flexibility and initiative in workflow management.

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is responsible to provide comprehensive health services to DOS,

Entering patient results into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and recording new lots of reagents and runs appropriate quality control prior to releasing patient results. Maintaining occupational proficiency in the use of the Composite Health Care System (CHCS) and other LIS systems (i.e. HCLL, Essentris, Lifetime) as required in performing daily tasks.
Contributing to a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors and co-workers by following established standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.

Processes all types of body fluid specimens (blood, urine, CSF, tissue, etc). Assesses integrity, appropriateness, and labeling of specimens. Corrects or informs appropriate personnel of problems. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Depending on section of the Laboratory:
Collects blood samples following established procedures and aseptic techniques.
Sets up specimens for testing, inoculates microbiology plates, performs preliminary phase of some testing.
Verify insurance and diagnosis code
Assists with autopsy, and preparing specimens for processing.
Issues blood and components to nursing personnel.
Processes specimens, and routes out to appropriate workstation.
Processes specimens to be sent out to reference labs.
Performs order entry for various types of specimens and processes admissions for different patient types, i.e. insurance, contract and self-pay.
Participates in Performance Improvement activities by participating in PI groups and giving input to enhance and improve operations.
Pursues resolution to problems (ie. inappropriate specimens, update status of specimens and to dialog to ensure proper usage of pneumatic tube) and communications/liaisons appropriately with health care providers.
Orients and trains personnel on new procedures and updates.
Maintains and monitors supplies and material management system.
Communicates responsibly to the Manager any issues or concerns. Assists the Manager and Send Out Coordinator with basic management functions such as scheduling lunches, breaks, in-service time, etc.
Volunteers to fill shift vacancies and accommodates schedule to meet department needs.
Works cooperatively with others, time permitting to accomplish other tasks as needed for the benefit of the Laboratory.

Technical, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills relevant to area in order to effectively communicate with physicians, health team members, patients and families.
Ability to prioritize work with minimal supervision, in order to independently carry out the duties of the position.
Able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Additional languages preferred.
Basic computer knowledge.
