Summary:
The Cath Lab Technologist is responsible for assisting in diagnostic and interventional cardiovascular procedures in the cardiac catheterization lab. This role involves preparing patients and equipment, monitoring hemodynamic data, assisting physicians during procedures, and ensuring patient safety throughout the process. The technologist operates specialized imaging equipment, maintains sterile technique, and collaborates with the healthcare team to provide high-quality patient care. This position requires technical expertise in cardiovascular procedures, critical thinking skills, and the ability to work efficiently in high-pressure situations.
Essential Work Functions:
Prepare and position patients for cardiac catheterization, angioplasty, stent placement, electrophysiology studies, and other interventional procedures
Assist physicians during procedures by passing catheters, wires, balloons, and stents, and operating fluoroscopy and hemodynamic monitoring equipment
Operate and maintain imaging equipment, contrast injectors, and hemodynamic monitoring systems, ensuring proper functionality
Scrub in and assist with sterile field setup, ensuring adherence to infection control and procedural protocols
Perform sheath removal and hemostasis using manual compression or closure devices as directed
Maintain accurate documentation, including patient records, imaging data, and equipment logs
Assist with inventory management, stocking supplies, and ensuring proper storage of sterile instruments and medications
Adhere to radiation safety protocols, ensuring proper use of lead aprons, shields, and dosimeters
Ensure compliance with hospital policies, safety guidelines, and regulatory requirements
Adhere to hospital safety protocols, infection control guidelines, and regulatory standards
Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of practice

Position Summary

Understands and adheres to the WPH performance standards, policies, and behaviors
Laboratory testing personnel responsibilities include:
Following the laboratory's pre-analytic and analytic procedures and maintaining records of these tests
Maintaining records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens
Adhering to the laboratory's quality assurance procedures, including documenting all:
Quality control activities including quality control testing and calibrations
Instrument and equipment verifications

Participates in regulatory readiness for CAP, AABB, NYSDOH, and Joint Commission.
Maintains 12 Continuing Education credits per year.
Understands and participates in standard operating procedures, proficiency testing, inspection audits, quality program including reporting non-conformances.
Evaluates test results for abnormalities and confirms those results per department protocols where required.
Participates in validations, training, and competency assessments as required.
Responsible for inventory management of lot numbers, expiration dates, labeling, and QC requirement.
Completes all annual mandatory training, in-services, and ongoing education as required.

Performs a wide range of clinical laboratory testing in an accurate and timely fashion by utilizing technical and problem-solving skills in conjunction with a thorough knowledge of clinical laboratory principles. Maintains effective communications and transfers testing and pending follow-ups between employees and shifts following all CHAMP and HRO standards. Maintains all Quality Control and Quality Assurance standards at all times. Maintains operational effectiveness and assumes full responsibility for continuing education requirements, licensure, and expertise to adapt as needed to an expanding department with increased testing complexity.

Responsibilities

* 3. Demonstrates technical competency by performing a wide variety of laboratory techniques. These include moderate to highly complex tests.
* 4. Demonstrates sufficient knowledge and skills to independently operate instrumentation and/or assigned benches.
* 5. Operates all department equipment safely and according to manufacturer guidelines.
* 6. Performs preventative maintenance and troubleshoots instruments failures.
* 7. Performs tasks that assist with overall operation of laboratory service according to laboratory policies and in compliance with regulatory guidelines.
* 8. May assist with training new employees.
* 9. Assist with specimen processing as needed.
* 10. Assist with inventory management/control.
* 11. Meet continuing education requirements.
* 12. Participates in activities that demonstrate professionalism, a commitment to competency and career growth.
* 13. Performs a variety of routine tests and procedures, performs instrument maintenance procedures, perform routine quality control procedures.
* 14. Performs other duties as assigned to assure efficient operations of department, including covering other lab sections.

EDUCATION
BS Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Biological Science or equivalent ASCP eligible or equivalent
