JOB DEFINITION:
This is an entry level position and is provided with on-the-job training. After completion of job training, this position demonstrates skills and abilities to perform routine tasks assigned.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS (Required):
Education: High School or equivalent education (GED) and some college level courses with lab work in general, analytical and/or organic chemistry.
Experience: No previous experience is required although appropriate experience may be used to satisfy a portion of the educational requirements.
Skills: Should be able to handle simple algebraic calculations. Should have good eye/hand coordination and a general understanding of basic chemistry concepts, good communication skills and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.

Waste Disposal: Isolation, remediation, containerizing RCRA hazardous waste generated in the assigned process area and under guidance of supervisory personnel.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Complete assigned jobs on time in as written in procedure. Assure accurate completion of tests to minimize retests on same sample. Understand and follow lab and company safety, quality, and behavioral policies. Maintain good relationship with plant personnel contacts. Responsible for safe and compliant handling of RCRA hazardous waste in accordance with all appropriate regulatory requirements. Notify Cost Center Leader and/or Quality Supervisor if any out of the ordinary conditions occur. Must be fully certified on Entry Level Lab Technician procedures within 12 months of hire and be recertified biennially. An Entry Level Lab Technician will not be considered for promotion if he/she is on probation for any reason.

Position Summary
Responsible for laboratory testing, quality control, phlebotomy, instrument maintenance and troubleshooting. Perform manual and automated routine blood tests. Prepare specimens for microscope examination. Operate laboratory equipment including centrifuges, dry bath incubators, and blood bank refrigerators.
Key Performance Areas
Responsible for performing proper quality control procedures before proceeding with patient testing.
Ensure that proper documentation including test report logs, quality control logs, equipment records, and all lab procedure and training checklists are completed on the correct time schedule. Will be responsible to ensure this is performed in central lab.
Maintain adequate inventory of laboratory supplies. Place order with purchasing as needed.
Perform technical laboratory procedures with accuracy and precision, meeting the standard of all accreditation/regulatory agencies.
Perform instrument maintenance at the required times and as needed.
Initiate troubleshooting procedures when instrument malfunction occurs and contact instrument service company, if necessary.
Comply with established safety guidelines and maintains cleanliness of the laboratory and equipment.
Complete any and all duties required to keep laboratory in compliance with state and federal regulatory agencies. Must be able to perform compliance testing.
Maintain and ensure the confidentiality of all patient and employee information at all times.
Comply with all Federal and State laws and regulations pertaining to patient care, patient's rights, safety, billing, and collections. Adhere to all AON and departmental policies and procedures, including IT policies and procedures and the Disaster Recovery Plan.
Must maintain MLT license and required CEUs.
Assist in training new employees to related job duties.
Will be expected to work overtime when given sufficient notice of required overtime.

License and Certification
Appropriate state license required.
National lab certification preferred.
BLS preferred.
Experience
Minimum of four years experience in the healthcare field, preferably in a clinical setting is required.

BASIC/REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. A Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science or medical technology program from an accredited college/university, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
2. 1 - 3 years clinical laboratory experience within the past five (5) years is required.
3. 1 - 3 years of experience with high complexity testing is required for any position that will oversee a unit which performs high complexity testing.
4. **Certification as Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or specialist certification in appropriate laboratory discipline from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is required.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Experience in a laboratory overseeing or performing moderate and/or high complexity testing in blood banking, chemistry, hematology, and microbiology is highly desired.
2. Ability to interpret results of immunohematology testing and determine appropriate blood components for transfusion is highly desired.
3. Experience in a Tissue Bank is desired.
