Reporting to the Inpatient Laboratory Operations and Technical Manager, and working closely with an excellent team of Acute Care Laboratory Professionals, the Hospital Microbiology Medical Technician will perform a diverse set of tests and tasks in one of the region's leading health systems. The Hospital Microbiology Medical Technician will observe and interpret changes in cells to help identify disease, cancer, and other abnormalities.

The Microbiology Medical Technician at this acute care, inpatient hospital will play a large role in keeping the testing and operations running smoothly. Performs a wide range of technical procedures analyzing blood and various body fluids in order to expedite the physician's diagnosis and treatment of his patient. Records and documents this data in the proper areas. The employee shall assist with quality audits in accordance with accrediting agencies. Technical duties will include routine patient testing and STAT testing. Technical competency and critical thinking are required, as errors could result in serious consequences to patients. Work involves confidential patient diagnosis and test results, requiring the employee to respect the patient's right to confidentiality. The technologist shall have good communication skills and interact pleasantly and professionally with all co-workers, medical staff, patients, visitors and others. The employee shall actively support the policies of the Laboratory and organization.
Responsibilities
1. Direct observations of routine patient tests performance, including, as applicable, patient identification and preparation; and specimen collection, handling, processing and testing.
2. Monitoring the recording and reporting of test results, including, as applicable, reporting critical results.
3. Review of intermediate test results or worksheets, quality control records, proficiency testing results, and preventive maintenance records.
4. Direct observation of performance of instrument maintenance and function checks.
5. Assessment of test performance through testing previously analyzed specimens, internal blind testing samples or external proficiency testing samples.
6. Evaluation of problem-solving skills.
7. Performs quality control procedures to ensure accuracy of test results.
8. Analyzes patient samples according to approved standards of testing.
9. Maintains equipment to ensure accurate, consistent results in the performance of tests.
10. Provides teaching and education to clinical laboratory students and other hospital or laboratory personnel.
11. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Collects and processes laboratory specimens as needed.
12. Follow standards of safety dictated by the laboratory, the hospital and regulatory agencies.
13. Contributes to the efficient operation of the laboratory.
14. Participates in continuing education programs for the upgrade of educational experience.
15. Other duties as assigned by Laboratory Leadership.
Qualifications
Education / Accreditation / Licensure (required & preferred):
MT (ASCP), MT (AMT), MT (HEW), qualified as a technologist under CLIA rules, or equivalent. (Appropriate Bachelor's degree required to meet CLIA rules). Individuals that are newly certified beginning January 2004 must participate in the BOR Certification Maintenance Program.
Experience (required and preferred):
Experience in laboratory medicine

Wellstar Cobb is currently seeking a weekend Med Tech II (Microbiology) to join their dynamic team!
The Medical Technologist II is under the general supervision of the Supervisors, Manager or Director, performs clinical laboratory testing pursuant to established and approved protocols requiring the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility, maintains equipment and records, performs quality assurance activities related to test performance and may supervise and teach within the laboratory setting. The Med Tech II is fully proficient in their area of expertise, and will serve as
a Generalist in all areas of the General Lab and Blood Bank, or as a Key Operator / Subject Matter Expert in their assigned area.

❑ Accuracy : Maintains acceptable accuracy in-patient, quality assurance, proficiency, and competency testing.
❑ Critical Thinking : Uses clinical/ theoretical knowledge to analyze, investigate, interpret, and report lab data.
❑ Job Knowledge : Maintains current personal training, education and practice of policies and procedures.
❑ Productivity : Practices organizational skills for efficiency of time, materials, cost, and availability of lab data
❑ Communication : Practices information monitoring, investigation, resolution, and hand-off to team members.
❑ Performs other duties as assigned


Qualifications


Required Minimum Education: Must have a Bachelors degree in Medical Technology or related science, except for HEW.
Required Minimum Experience: 2 years of experience as a Medical Technologist with 1 year of Blood Bank
experience if applicable
Required Minimum Certification: MT or equivalent from an accrediting agency approved by Georgia Department of Community Health. (ASCP, AMT). Active employees with a MT(AAB) or MT (AMT) working as an MT2 in WellStar as of 9/1/20 will be grandfathered into this position.
Required Minimum Skills: Computer/data entry experience. Ability to communicate with various members of the healthcare team. Ability to use EXCEL, Word and have basic computer operational knowledge. Epic and 3M experience preferred
