Performs operational duties, maintenance and advanced troubleshooting of laboratory instrumentation and equipment. Acts as resource to other laboratory personnel. Additional responsibility includes: Assisting with new equipment validation and implementation; Employee training and competency assessment; Regulatory compliance responsibilities for CAP, TCJ, AABB or other agencies, quality assurance, quality control and instrument maintenance. Education Required: Bachelor's Degree from an approved college or university and/or graduate of an accredited school of medical technology, or equivalent such as military training as defined by 42 CFR 493.1489, or have qualified at the Medical Technologist level by achieving a satisfactory grade on a HHS examination prior to 2/28/92 42 CFR 493.1491. The above meets required criteria as defined by CLIA regulations for High Complexity testing (42 CFR 493.1489 and 42 CFR 493.1491). Experience Required: 2 years as a medical technologist in acute care facility, OR 1 year as a medical technologist in acute facility and a Master's degree. Certifications Required: Registered with an approved certifying agency (ASCP, NCA, AMT or CSMLS within 12 months of hire). Equivalency evaluation by ECE, NACES or AICE for non-US trained personnel must be completed within 30 days of hire. To perform venipuncture and skin puncture and pre-analytical and post analytical steps of laboratory testing. Essential Responsibilities: Upholds Kaiser Permanentes Policies and Procedures, Principles of Responsibilities and applicable state, federal and local laws. Selects the appropriate phlebotomy technique relative to the age and physical maturation of the patient. Assesses the quality of blood to be drawn from the patient based on the patients age, physical maturation and the test or study to be performed. Performs venipuncture, finger stick or heel stick, as required, proficiently on patients of all ages. Properly labels sample(s) and transports to laboratory or Clinical Laboratory Scientist as required. Performs the pre-analytical phase of testing by bar coding, centrifuging, separating, logging, culturing and staining of bacteriological specimens. Monitors and maintains appropriate inventory levels of supplies and reagents. Establishes and maintains courteous, cooperative relations with the public, patients and other personnel. Performs other duties as required including checking in patients collecting appropriate revenue, accessioning test orders and giving preparation instructions to patients. Handles difficult patients in a professional manner. Displays professionalism at all times, both in attitude and appearance. Follows directives form all supervisors, leads and seniors. Assume other activities and responsibilities from time to time as directed. Basic Qualifications: Experience One (1) year phlebotomy experience in an acute care medical center or non-acute care setting or equivalent military experience. Education High school diploma or General Education Development (GED) required. License, Certification, Registration Phlebotomy Technician II Certificate (California) OR Phlebotomy Technician I Certificate (California) Additional Requirements: Demonstrated ability to perform the duties/responsibilities of the job at a fully satisfactory performance level. NOTE: The SCPMG Regional Reference Lab does not require phlebotomy certification. Preferred Qualifications: Relevant college courses in the life sciences. Notes: Scheduled hours per week is 20+ May need to travel to OCI and all South OC MOB labs May work every other weekend and holidays as needed This is a variable position, start times may vary within the specific shift.
