Job Summary:

Position Qualifications Required:
Required Experience: Basic computer and customer service skills. Previous lab experience preferred.
Required Education: BS in Biology, Chemistry, or other relevant science with at least 24 semester hours of sciences to include six credits of Chemistry, 6 credits of Biology, and additional 12 credits in chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory science in any combination.

Job Duties
Receives clinical specimens, processes and aliquots them appropriately for each work station. Stores for a limited time or discards completed specimens following designated workstation protocols.
Draws blood samples from inpatients and outpatients as needed by the laboratory.
Provides Blood Bank coverage as required.
Maintains computerized log entries of specimens received and aliquoted.
Prepares standards, controls and reagents according to established formulas and procedures.
Follows the written protocols for the automated instrumentation at each work station. This encompasses the entire operation of each instrument including: maintenance, start-up, operation, data entry, verification of results, quality control, shut down, and linearity checks.
Maintains required manual records, reports and statistics as directed in the work station manual; maintains work station equipment maintenance logs.
Notifies Lab Supervisor or Lab Manager immediately of instrumentation problems.
Notifies supervisor of impending shortages of supplies as necessary to keep materials at adequate inventory levels.
Calls in all critical results to nursing units, ER, ICU's, etc. according to the critical report policy, and documents calls into laboratory information system.
Follows established departmental policies and procedures. Maintains quality control, maintenance, safety, environmental and infection control standards and records.

Process human tissue and body fluid specimens in preparation for microscopic exam
Perform technical duties related to the production of histopathological slides of surgical specimens
Section the embedded tissue, using a microtome and mount the section properly on a microscope slide
Perform various immunohistochemical tests on formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue sections
Process mounted sections through routine and special staining procedures
Properly orient and embed surgical tissue specimens
Prepare the stains and reagents needed for special procedures
Report accurate and timely test results in order to deliver quality patient care
Operate and maintain manual and automated instruments
Perform and document equipment maintenance as needed
Record equipment log data in an accurate and timely manner
Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control procedures
Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies
Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, analysis and reporting
Document problems that may affect test performance and perform corrective actions as needed
Requirements:
Associate's degree in a Chemical or Biological science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology or meets local regulatory (CLIA & State) requirements
Histology and/or ASCP certifications are preferred
Previous experience in histology is preferred but not required
Previous histology experience is required without an Associate's degree
Immunohistochemistry experience is a plus

The Executive Director is responsible for all aspects of the medical laboratory technician program and future programs as they pertain to the entry level programs on both the Gloucester and Cumberland campuses. The Executive Director is responsible for development, implementation, and evaluation of contemporary curricula, as well as coordination of contemporary resources for student instruction. In addition to maintaining professional standards as identified in the NAACLS accreditation criteria, the Executive Director will serve the College and the Division with service in committees and recruitment activities. In the development phase of the inaugural curriculum, the position requires a 35 hours per week on campus commitment.
Due to the nature of Medical Laboratory Technician program development and accreditation requirements, once students are enrolled, teaching will comprise 50% of the 35-hour work week. Administration of the program, including curriculum coordination and course schedules, will comprise the remaining 50% of the 35-hour work week.
* Initiates and encourages the cooperation and supervision of staff and instructors in program assessment, long range planning, program activities, admission and marketing initiatives, and participation in College-wide endeavors.
* Coordinates the curriculum and course schedules with division administration.
* Develops new curriculum and revisions to align with contemporary Professional standards.
* Assures continued compliance of the program with criteria for accreditation of appropriate external accrediting agencies including Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
* Complies with accreditation standards and provides notification of any substantive changes within the program or any change in accreditation status to College administration and the appropriate agencies.
* Maintains professional expertise and/or professional proficiencies: Pursues professional development; Remains current in the professional standards.
