Minimum Qualifications
The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:
* Associate's degree or 2 year technical degree in a field related to the assignment; AND
* 5 years of clinical laboratory experience.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted. Please note candidates must have at least 1 year of laboratory field and/or equivalent clinical experience.

Function/Duties of Position
This Molecular Technologist performs high-complexity clinical molecular testing to support the Knight Diagnostic Laboratories' (KDL) precision medicine and translational research mission. This position plays a key role in developing and validating new clinical assays while also performing routine testing as needed. The Molecular Technologist will conduct wet bench procedures and data analysis using a variety of molecular platforms, including but not limited to next-generation sequencing (NGS), digital/RQ-PCR, etc. The role requires a strong understanding of molecular biology principles and techniques, as well as familiarity with laboratory operations under CAP and CLIA regulations.
The ideal candidate will possess in-depth knowledge of molecular laboratory terminology, instrumentation, and safety protocols, along with demonstrated experience in method validation, assay troubleshooting, and quality control processes. This position demands a high level of precision, the ability to follow and develop detailed standard operating procedures (SOPs), and strong analytical and problem-solving skills. The technologist must be self-driven, capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously, and committed to meeting project timelines within a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
By ensuring the highest standards of testing accuracy and reliability, the Molecular Technologist directly contributes to delivering high-quality diagnostic results that inform patient care and support the overall mission of the Knight Cancer Institute to advance cancer diagnosis and treatment through innovation in molecular pathology.

* Bachelor's degree in a biological science AND completion of a training program or one year of experience performing molecular techniques; MT or MLS certification preferred

DEPARTMENTAL SUMMARY: The laboratory departments provide many services to our multi-hospital organization and outreach community including: blood collection, processing, testing, and reporting of results, spanning all disciplines of laboratory medicine.
POSITION OVERVIEW: The Medical Laboratory Scientist at St. Charles Health System performs, interprets and reports clinical laboratory testing on a variety of human biological specimen types. This position does not directly manage other caregivers, however may be asked to review and provide feedback on the work of other caregivers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
Performs laboratory analysis of human biological specimens submitted for testing in accordance with laboratory policies, procedures and quality standards. Accurately documents results into the Laboratory Information System. Recognizes reports and documents critical test results in a timely manner.
Ensures that specimens for analysis are appropriate and adequate to provide meaningful results. Recognizes when specimen condition or adequacy may impact test results and exercises professional judgment to reject, request recollection, consult with ordering provider, or perform testing with appended warning comments.
Performs, evaluates and documents quality control, quality assurance, proficiency testing and calibration procedures according to laboratory policies and procedures. Performs additional quality assurance activities when professional judgment identifies a need to confirm the accuracy and/or quality of test results.
Ensures that analytic instruments are properly calibrated and maintained. Performs and documents cleaning, maintenance and troubleshooting of analytic instruments and test systems. Recognizes when a test system is operating in a manner that may compromise the quality or accuracy of testing results and takes appropriate remedial actions.
Reviews and evaluates test results prior to release. Recognizes suspect results based upon laboratory defined criteria, system appended alerts, inconsistency with previous results, inconsistency with patient age/medical condition, or professional judgment.
Takes appropriate remedial steps to ensure the accuracy of suspect results.
Performs all specimen handling, specimen manipulation, reagent preparation, test system maintenance, chemical/biologics handling and testing procedures in a manner that ensures the safety of self and others.
Appropriately refers issues beyond scope of practice to a discipline/sub discipline specialist, supervisor or pathologist.
Performs all duties in a professional and ethical manner and in accordance with all regulatory requirements.
Obtains blood samples via arterial, venous or capillary puncture according to laboratory policies and procedures (site dependent duty).
Within credentialed scope of practice, serves as a resource to medical providers assisting with the selection of appropriate testing, specimen collection and handling, and interpretation of test results.
Consults with clinicians and colleagues in the investigation and identification of possible sources of error or interferences that may impact test performance or compromise test results.
For those disciplines or sub disciplines in which a specialist credential is held, serves as an expert resource to laboratory colleagues, clinicians, and other health care professionals.
Consults and collaborates with professional colleagues to identify and remediate process issues. Participates in efforts to identify opportunities to continuously improve laboratory procedures, processes and services.
Leads or assists in the research, development, evaluation, validation, documentation and implementation of new, improved or expanded testing services.
Delivers customer service and/or patient care in a manner that promotes goodwill, is timely, efficient and accurate.

EDUCATION:
Required: Bachelors, Masters or Doctoral degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science from an accredited college or university.

Required: Current national certification or licensure at the Technologist/Scientist level by one or more of the following accredited credentialing agencies: ASCP, AMT, AAB, HEW and California Department of Health Services. This position provides testing to ensure patient transfusion safety, necessary laboratory process to maintain and monitor the blood product inventory, document all transactions relating to blood product receipt, use and disposal. The incumbent also instructs students, resolves or refers clinical questions regarding transfusion, monitors and maintains testing and blood product storage equipment, prepares blood components, chooses appropriate blood products for patient transfusions and ensures that hospitals and clinics are aware that products are available when the necessary lab work/processing are completed. Function/Duties of Position
Medical Laboratory Science Bench Duties
Perform routine lab testing; accurately record results and interpretations by computer entry and/or legibly in writing.
Use lab instruments, supplies and equipment responsibly and according to lab and manufacturer's guidelines and Transfusion Service procedures.
Perform complex serologic testing to resolve problems encountered in routine testing, accurately record results and interpretations. Obtain consult to resolve issues.
Recognize incorrect or unusual blood product orders and take steps to modify the order after consulting patient physician or Transfusion Service medical staff or residents.
Maintain and manage an adequate inventory of perishable blood products and ensure that excessive wastage does not occur.
Choose appropriate blood products for patients based on urgency of need, available inventory, lab results, and therapeutic requirements.
Prepare blood components according to SOP. Thaw plasma and cryoprecipitate; irradiate blood product, divide blood products into aliquots using correct technique; pool blood products; document preparation and label correctly.
Sign in blood products received from Red Cross with appropriate documentation. Issue and receive blood products to and from patient care areas.
Document transactions involving blood products correctly and legibly, i.e., receive/issue documentation; verbal orders; and orders placed with Red Cross, etc.
Follow established policies and procedures but also have knowledge to modify in special situations; bring these to the attention of the Technical Coordinator, Manager, orMedical Director. Seek guidance from or notify the Technical Coordinator, Manager, Medical Director, or Resident, when appropriate.
Train new personnel and mentor personnel in Transfusion Service procedures and policies while promoting excellent customer service, communication and teamwork.
Guide, instruct, and evaluate Medical Technician and Medical Laboratory Scientist students.
Ensure department specific turn-around times are met for tests, products and services.
Provide guidance and cover Transfusion Service Laboratory Technical Assistant bench as needed.
Quality Control Monitoring, Maintenance and Review
Perform Quality control, periodic maintenance and Proficiency Testing as assigned.
Perform and document maintenance of analyzers, blood storage and other equipment. Troubleshoot equipment and interact with vendors, as needed.
Participate in departmental Quality Monitoring/Improvement processes. Recognize and document variations, errors, and accidents.
Participate in qualification and validation of new equipment or methods as instructed by the Manager or Technical Coordinator.
Document proper temperature of blood products in transit from hospital to hospital, and internally at OHSU.
Inspect blood products for appropriate appearance. Organize, check for accuracy, and report blood product usage statistics as assigned.
Maintain inventory of supplies and ordering; alert Technical Coordinator or Manager when supplies are low in a timely manner.
Accurately bill blood products and testing, and record audit trail of product use in compliance with regulatory and accrediting requirements

Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science orMedical Laboratory Science which includes a clinical lab externship, and current certification as MT (ASCP), or MLS (ASCP) within 90 days of hire. Current certification and credential maintenance must be maintained for individuals who were certified after January 1, 2004. OR
Completion of a 2 year accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program, plus MLT (ASCP) or equivalent certification within 90 days of hire, and 4 years of experience in a clinical laboratory. Certification as MT (ASCP) or MLS (ASCP) or by AMT preferred. Current certification and credential maintenance must be maintained for individuals who were certified after January 1, 2004. OR
Bachelor's degree in a Chemical or Biological field, and four years experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician in a clinical laboratory performing testing and related tasks. Position Summary
The purpose of the Medical Laboratory Technologist position is to perform the tests in urinalysis, hematology, chemistry, immunology, and bacteriology which are ordered by medical practitioners. The technologist is able to oversee the routine day-to-day operations of the laboratory. Performance of these operations will necessitate the access of the lab computer system to input and retrieve data as well as review and analyze information.
