Job Summary and Qualifications
The MedicalTechnologist performs tests and procedures in one or more areas of the clinical laboratory with independent judgement required. Medicaltechnologists are accountable for accurate results the proper use of quality control materials and evaluation of those results. They must recognize the interdependency of tests and conditions that affect test results and participate in continuing education, competency and proficiency testing.
What qualifications you will need:
Must be currently registered as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or MedicalTechnologist by American Society for Clinical Pathology, American MedicalTechnologists, National Credentialing Agency OR US Department of Health Education Welfare.
Bachelor's degree in Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Medical Technology, or Clinical Laboratory Science. Must meet CLIA qualifications for testing personnel.
Prefer hospital laboratory experience.

Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory and non-mandatory continuing education; accesses training needs and participates in Continuing Education (CE) programs annually. Completes all required 6 month and annual competencies in required time frame and participates in or oversees proficiency testing as assigned.
Monitors Quality Control (QC) and Quality Management (QM) for area assigned. Evaluates QC results for acceptability and investigates variances, notifying the appropriate individual of unresolved issues. Performs lookback if required. Monitors supply/reagent inventory and uses laboratory resources efficiently. Documents receipt and opening of a supply. Monitors expiration dates of all supplies and ensures adequate supplies are on hand.
Understands and complies with standards and conditions set forth by various governmental and accrediting agencies in assigned operational area. Performs competency assessments following regulatory standards. Assumes responsibility for operation of the section in absence of supervisor and serves as General Supervisor or Technical Consultant. Instructs students, new team members, laboratory support staff, and hospital personnel in procedure, technique, and theory. Maintains a safe and clean working environment and responds immediately to safety violations.
Uses the correct policies and procedures in the collection, labelling, handling and processing of all specimens. Verifies identification of the patient, specimen, and results. Evaluates specimen integrity based on department standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Recognizes customer satisfaction issues and responds/escalates appropriately. Supports Prisma Health system and campus financial, customer service, and quality initiatives in a positive and productive manner. Willingly completes and performs team assignments. Participates in work unit action plans and supports department-based goals and initiatives which contribute to the success of Prisma Health.
Communicates information including critical values to other members of the healthcare team and performs required documentation. Educates and supports laboratory customers.
Operates laboratory instrumentation. Establishes standards and writing instructions for calibrating or standardizing instruments and equipment. Minimum Qualifications
Education - Bachelor's degree in chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution.
Experience - Two (2) years of technical experience post training in high and moderate complexity testing.
In Lieu Of
Bachelor's degree with 60 semester hours from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, includes either 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that include six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination; AND Laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) (training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above), OR at least three months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.
Meets the training and experience requirements defined within Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations, 2023 (Dec 28): [42CFR493.1423], [42CFR493.1489].
Foreign degree deemed acceptable following evaluation as outlined by The College of American Pathologists (CAP).

Ashley River Tower (ART) perioperative services is located on the fourth floor of the ART building. The ART operating room offers adult outpatient and inpatient surgeries through various surgical service lines including general, plastics, oncology, cardiac, thoracic, heart and lung transplants, vascular, colorectal, bariatric, and robotics. Operations are Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 7:00pm. General, Vascular, and Cardiothoracic call teams are available to cover emergency cases prior to the posted schedule times and on the weekends. There is 24-hour charge nurse coverage for after hours and weekends. The clinical programs that service ART are recognized for excellence in cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, transplant surgery, as well as general and GI surgery and is nationally recognized for management of chronic pancreatitis, and bariatric surgery. MUSCs heart and lung transplant program are certified by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) and is the only heart and lung transplant program in South Carolina. There are dedicated ORs for cardiac surgery that house traditional CT surgery, heart transplants, and help support the VAD program. In addition to the traditional open heart surgical procedures, MUSCs heart and vascular center provides many innovative heart valve repair and replacement options, including the TAVR procedure. ART operating room offers many new and innovative solutions to manage and treat disease through the discipline of surgery with the highest quality of care and service.
