JOB DUTIES
Performs performance-based objectives and outlines for course of study following curriculum guidelines and requirements of the college and state and federal initiatives
Organizes program of practical and technical instruction, including demonstrations of skills required in the medical assistant profession, and lectures on theory, techniques and terminology
Instructs students in subject areas such as use, maintenance and the safe operation of tools and equipment, codes or regulations related to the Clinical Medical Assisting Program
Instructs students in the importance of accuracy, neatness, efficiency, resourcefulness and good work habits in obtaining employment as Clinical Medical Assistants
Assigns lessons to students and corrects homework; administers tests to evaluate achievement of students in technical knowledge and practical skills
Keeps records of daily attendance and student progress; reports to Lead Instructor and Registrar
Presents subject matter to students, utilizing a variety of methods and techniques, such as lectures, discussions or demonstrations; ensures use of classroom time is organized and that instruction and clean-up (if applicable) can be accomplished within the allotted time
Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning concepts; responds to basic student questions; may initiate study groups in preparation for examinations
Enforces classroom protocols, rules and regulations; maintains classroom discipline; utilizes effective classroom management techniques
Attends meetings and trainings per requirements of Lead Instructor, Program Chair or Director of Education; participates in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences and professional development workshops
File an appropriate course syllabus for each course taught with the appropriate Program Chair
Conduct class evaluations and complete other college evaluations in accordance with college policy
Make suggestions to the Program Chair concerning the improvement of the curriculum in keeping with the objectives of the college
Complete an annual goals setting and performance review with the Program Chair, approved by the Director of Education
PROFICIENCY IN THE FOLLOWING CLINICAL SKILLS
Aseptic hand washing techniques
Using the autoclave to sterilize surgical instruments and supplies
Applying universal precautions and OSHA regulations
Disinfection of exam room surfaces
Creating a surgical field
Responding to medical emergencies and basic first aid measures
Conducting a patient interview and obtaining a medical history
Writing progress notes in the medical record
Measuring vital signs of infants, children and adults
Assisting a physician with basic and specialized exams
Administration of topical, inhaled and oral medications
Administration of injected medications, including intradermal, subcutaneous and intramuscular routes
Blood collection techniques, including venipuncture (phlebotomy) and capillary puncture
Processing and handling various specimens

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Associate's Degree preferred, but not required.
Must be a Certified or Registered Medical Assistant
American Heart BLS Certified instructor a plus
Phlebotomy Technician Certification (CPT) a plus
Minimum of four (4) years working as a Medical Assistant and clinical experience with the supervision of Certified Medical Assistants
Strong background in administration, as well as clinical work, including phlebotomy, EKG, spirometry, vitals, transcription, billing and terminology
Experience delivering instruction using an interactive approach and/or multi-media technology

Assistant Currently recruiting a Medical Assistant in Alexandria, LA to coordinate complex clinical operations at a facility that houses individuals detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The Medical Assistant supports the delivery of medical care services for detainees held in the custody of ICE at a detention facility through their role as a medical assistant. Patients served may be adult men and women and children. The incumbent's scope of practice will delineate the specific clinical duties performed to support the health care mission.
DUTIES OF THE MEDICAL ASSISTANT:
1. Provides direct care to patients throughout the lifespan in adherence to the defined Scope of Practice.
2. Completes all required competency assessments successfully and updates annually and/or as requested and attends all required training and completes successfully.
3. Performs functions in accordance with current accepted practice and certification.

16. Maintains functional proficiency and adheres to required electronic health record processes and procedures for professional and accurate health documentation.
17. Completes and passes all discipline specific competencies testing, initially and annually.
18. Completes all initial, annual and ad hoc training as required/assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

The Medical Assistant supports the delivery of medical care services for detainees held in the custody of ICE at a detention facility through their role as a medical assistant. Patients served may be adult men and women and children. The incumbent's scope of practice will delineate the specific clinical duties performed to support the health care mission.
DUTIES OF THE MEDICAL ASSISTANT:
1. Provides direct care to patients throughout the lifespan in adherence to the defined Scope of Practice.
2. Completes all required competency assessments successfully and updates annually and/or as requested and attends all required training and completes successfully.
3. Performs functions in accordance with current accepted practice and certification.
4. Provides patient care under the supervision of licensed health care staff to include the registered nurse (RN), nurse practitioners (NP), physician assistant (PA), physician, dentist, psychiatrist, pharmacist, or behavioral health provider (BHP).
5. Responds to health emergencies as directed by licensed health care staff.
6. Asks patient health questions as directed by licensed health care staff.
7. Completes required health documentation in the electronic health record.
8. Prepares patient and examination room for health evaluation by licensed health care staff.
9. Performs tasks for outpatient health care to include:
a. Vital signs
b. Fingerstick glucose checks
c. Urinalysis, urine pregnancy test, urine drug screening, and other CLIA-waived tests performed at the facility.
d. Rapid flu and strep testing.
e. Phlebotomy
f. Peak flow test
g. Infant length/weight/head circumference
h. Electrocardiogram
i. Sterile set up and clean up for minor outpatient surgical procedures.
j. Sterilization, packaging, and/or disposal of medical instruments.
k. Management of medical waste as per requirements.
l. Administration of basic first aid.
m. Dressing changes as ordered by licensed health staff.
n. Administration of immunizations
o. Serving as chaperone during patient examinations.
p. Serving as scribe for patient health care encounters.
q. Administration of medications via topical, oral, intra-muscular, intra-dermal, and nasally as ordered by licensed health staff.
r. Other assigned duties within scope of practice
10. Performs required quality assurance testing and manages inventory as required:
a. Maintains laboratory supplies and equipment
b. Assists administrative leadership in required supply ordering processes
c. Perform required quality testing on CLIA waived equipment and maintain appropriate testing logs
11. Performs support tasks in the health clinic to ensure cleanliness and of medical equipment and furniture:
a. Attends to safety and hygienic requirements and tasks to ensure a safe and clean working environment at all times.
b. Attends to required tasks to that equipment, clinic room supplies, inventory, and logs are clean, functional, and up to date.
c. Record refrigerator temperatures.
12. Performs medication administration and assists with pharmacy tasks.
a. Delivers keep on person medication to patients and obtains appropriate detainee signature documenting receipt of items.
b. Administers medication via pill line and documents appropriately in the medication administration record.
13. Professionally manages clinic telephone calls to include taking messages, transferring telephone calls appropriately, and alerting appropriate licensed health staff immediately for calls of an urgent nature.
14. Performs all record keeping functions in accordance with program policies and position.
15. Transcribes patient clinical encounter information in the health record for other health staff.
16. Maintains functional proficiency and adheres to required electronic health record processes and procedures for professional and accurate health documentation.
17. Completes and passes all discipline specific competencies testing, initially and annually.
18. Completes all initial, annual and ad hoc training as required/assigned.
19. Maintains patient confidentiality, and confidentiality of health records, in compliance with the Privacy Act and HIPAA regulations in all work activities. 20. Adheres to, and maintains awareness of, IHSC Policies, Procedures, Directives, Operational Memoranda and accreditation standards as prescribed by ICE/IHSC.
21. Attends and participates in required staff meetings
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
+ Minimum Education: high school diploma or general educational development (GED) test diploma.
+ Graduate of an approved Medical Assistant program located in a State, the District of Columbia, or a U.S. Territory.
+ One year of experience as a medical assistant in a clinical setting (preferred, not required).
+ Experience in a detention/correctional or residential healthcare setting (preferred, not required).
REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:
1. Active, unrestricted certification as a Medical Assistant. Certified by one of the following:
a. Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA),
b. Registered Medical Assistant by the American Society of Medical Technologists (AMT),
c. Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA),
d. National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), or
e. National Registered title of Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) by the National Health Association for Health Professionals.
2. Must have and maintain one of the following certifications: Basic Life Support for health care providers through the American Heart Association , CPR for the professional rescuer through the American Red Cross or the American Safety and Health Institute.
3. Experience in a detention/correctional or residential healthcare setting (preferred, not required).
