BASIC FUNCTION Under the direction of the Healthcare Providers and Organizational Protocols, the position of Medical Assistant provides direct patient care along with clinical and administrative assistance to the healthcare provider(s), ensuring smooth patient flow and efficient clinical operations.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
1) Clinical Responsibilities:
a. Obtain medical history from patients and record vital signs
b. Accurate documentation of services provided
c. Prepare patients for examinations, assist with medical procedures and treatments
d. Administer medications as directed by healthcare providers or protocol
e. Perform basic laboratory tests and collect specimens for testing
f. Provide Patient Education as directed by provider or protocol
g. Instruct patients about medication and special diets as directed by healthcare providers or protocol
h. Conducts basic first aid and CPR
i. Awareness of infection control protocols
2) Administrative Responsibilities:
a. Communicate with patients and their families regarding healthcare needs and concerns
b. Schedule appointments for patients and maintain medical records as needed
c. Answer phones, properly document messages, and provide information to patients as needed
d. Order and maintain medical supplies, lab supplies, and other equipment as needed in the exam room and clinical site
e. Assist Front Office Associates with scheduling patients when needed
f. Manage Patient Referrals to specialists or other services when needed or directed
g. Manage and process any prior authorization for medications or medical services as needed
3) Communication and Interpersonal Responsibilities:
a. Effective verbal and written communication with patients and healthcare professionals
b. Active listening and empathy when interacting with patients
c. Maintaining patient confidentiality and privacy per HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability) guidelines
d. Collaborating with the healthcare team, both internal and external stakeholders
4) Performs other duties as assigned
a. Effectively carries out tasks and responsibilities beyond core job duties and primary role. The additional duties may vary from time to time and encompass a wide range of activities that contribute to the overall success of the organization (floating, schedule variations, assisting co-workers, patients, visitors, customers, leaders, and other stakeholders in support of the organization.)
QUALIFICATIONS:
GENERAL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

PROFESSIONAL/TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
1) Must possess a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate.

LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS
1) Required: Successful completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Training Program

RESPONSIBILITIES
Hospital Corpsmen (HM) assist health care professionals in providing medical care to Navy personnel and their families. Specifically, Hospital Corpsmen may be called upon to:
Perform emergency medical treatment on SEALs, Seabees, Marines and other military personnel injured in the field, as well as on Sailors aboard ships or aircraft

dental X-rays and operate X-ray equipment
Serve as an operating room technician for general and specialized surgery

Maintain patient treatment records, conduct research and perform clinical tests
Assist Navy Physicians and Nurses in a variety of medical fields, including, but not limited to: radiology, physical therapy, phlebotomy, dental, surgery, family medicine, pathology, womens health and more
