Primary Duties:
Receives and screens telephone callers, provides information per department policy, and/or routes calls to appropriate personnel. Takes and forwards messages as appropriate. Schedules and coordinates appointments as necessary. Obtains relevant diagnostic test results prior to patient appointment.
Greets patients, visitors, and staff to the office, determines their need(s) and assists them accordingly. Registers patients in the patient registration system and in any applicable department system confirming insurance information and securing applicable documentation. Accepts payments. Enters data into databases/logs for statistical purposes. Creates, maintains, and adapts spreadsheets and electronic computer files as requested. Prepares routine correspondence and may transcribe dictated physician notes as required Follows up with patients after procedure, delivery, or surgery; conveys information to physician.
Prepares patient to be seen by physician; escorts patient to examination room and takes vital signs and records them in the patient chart. Collects laboratory specimens, sends them to the lab and performs electrocardiography functions as needed. Assists physician in examinations/procedures. Cleans and prepares exam/procedure room between patients. Administers oral and parenteral (excluding IV) medications and immunizations as directed by supervising physician.
Maintains patient charts/departmental files/records/logs, including billing and appointment records/logs. Pre-registers out-patients for next day appointments. Inventories and orders office and clinical supplies and equipment for the department and obtaining equipment repair/maintenance. Checks equipment to ensure proper functioning. Assures accuracy of billing; forwards bill(s) to appropriate department personnel for payment. Receives and reviews all incoming mail to the department. Opens, sorts, and distributes mail, as appropriate.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED.
Certification or registration as Medical Assistant within 1 year of employment required.
6 months experience working in an ambulatory care medical office, equivalent experience
Externship in a medical or ambulatory health setting strongly preferred.
Completed externship program at MedStar Health may be substituted for the 6 months experience in ambulatory care medical office.
For Cardiology offices only: 6 months experience working in an ambulatory care medical office or equivalent required, or Bachelor's degree in exercise physiology/science or related major or successful completion of a cardiac technician course.
Licenses and Certifications:

Trauma Surgery Advanced Practice Provider Job Responsibilities:
Collaborate with trauma surgeons to assess and manage the care of acutely injured or critically ill surgical patients in the inpatient setting.
Management of patients in the emergency department, intensive care unit, intermediate care unit, and floor.

About the Department:
Student Health Services (SHS) provides health care services at George Mason University. SHS provides primary care services and health promotion to eligible students at Mason, including but not limited to initial and follow up assessment, history taking, physical exam of patients, utilization of differential diagnosis, appropriate interventions, consultations and referrals as indicated, and basic emergency treatment and stabilization. Staff provide services to faculty, staff, and visitors on an as needed basis. SHS operates its main clinic on the Mason Fairfax Campus and satellite clinics on the Mason Square (Arlington) and SciTech Campuses (Manassas).
About the Position:
The Clinical Medical Assistant supports the efforts of the Student Health Services (SHS) Nursing Section. The position works interdependently with other healthcare professionals to provide high quality health care in the clinical setting. The Clinical Medical Assistant utilizes clinical and laboratory skills in preparing patients for provider visits, administering prescribed treatments and medications, performing diagnostic tests, and carrying out other duties as requested by the Lead Clinic Nurse and/or Associate Nursing Director.
Responsibilities:
Clinical Skills
* Records patient intake including vital signs, allergies and medications;
* Performs procedures such as ear lavage, EKGs, and basic first aid;
* Assists providers during procedures and chaperones sensitive exams;
* Follows OSHA safety practices, including handling of Biohazard materials;
* Maintains a safe environment for staff and patients by proper cleaning/disinfection of RME (reusable medical equipment) and stocking of supplies;
* Maintains competency and knowledge in all skills by participating in orientation, ongoing training and annual infection control training and competency review; and
* Answers phones and schedules appointments as needed.
Laboratory/Phlebotomy Techniques and Safety Practices
* Performs CLIA-waived testing;
* Completes documentation of laboratory test results with accuracy;
* Safely operates and maintains all laboratory equipment;
* Properly stores and handles hazardous materials, cleaning agents, and potentially infectious materials; and
* Serves as primary backup for laboratory upon completion of lab orientation/competency.
Administers Immunizations
* Safely and accurately administers immunizations;
* Follows CDC and WHO guidelines for vaccine recommendations; educates patients on vaccines;
* Participates in annual safe injection practices training and ongoing CDC training; and
* Participates in university-wide flu and vaccine clinics.
Administrative Skills
* Demonstrates effective communication and interpersonal skills with diplomacy, courtesy, and confidentiality;

Gives immunizations and other injectable medications under the supervision of the physician, nurse practitioner or registered nurse. Assists with patient treatments during clinical sessions.

DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES: (Essential Functions: Duties and responsibilities noted with bullets are considered to be the essential functions of the job).
* Performs measurements of vital signs, pulse oximetry, height and weight, BMI, head circumference of infants and toddlers, and hearing and vision screenings.
* Records vital signs and physical measurements using pediatric growth charts as appropriate. Notifies nursing and/or providers of any significant changes or abnormalities in these measurements.
* Obtains health history information and completes medication reconciliation.
* Performs other diagnostic testing as directed such as EKG testing.
* Administers immunizations and other injections under the supervision of the Physician, Nurse Practitioner or Registered Nurse.
* Collects blood samples via finger sticks, heel sticks, and venipuncture for various blood analyses, including hemoglobin, blood glucose, lead levels, A1C, PT/INR and newborn screenings.
* Completes CLIA waived testing including Urinalysis, Hemoccult, Urine Pregnancy Test, Rapid Influenza Test, and Rapid Strep Test.
* Records results of all laboratory tests and notifies nursing staff and/or provider of any abnormal values.
* Processes and packages lab samples for analysis by off-site lab services.
* Functions as chaperone for female clients during medical exams by male providers and for male clients during medical exams by female providers.
* Assures patients are appropriately checked out, i.e. labs performed, immunizations and other medications given, home testing provided, and patient education given as directed by provider and in coordination with Registered Nurse.
* Addresses telephone encounters in a timely manner.
OTHER DUTIES:
* Performs control testing for all on-site lab analyses according to clinic protocols and CLIA standards.
* Performs daily, weekly, and monthly autoclave maintenance according to manufacturer's instructions.
* Sterilizes all necessary equipment according to CDC guidelines.
* Cleans all medical equipment, exam tables, baby and adult scales according to OSHA standards.
* Maintains clean, well-stocked exam rooms.
* Assists in supply and vaccine ordering.
* Prepare and maintain special internal and external reports as requested by Supervisor and/or Department Head.
* May be assigned to various project lead roles to advance the development of the department and support ad hoc needs.
* Able to work under minimal supervision
* Employee will be asked to perform additional duties and take on other responsibilities as dictated by events and circumstances.
QUALIFICATION/EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
* Graduation from a formal medical assistant training program.
* Certification or Diploma required

Purpose & Scope:
The Medical Assistant/ Receptionist ensures the clinical environment is cleaned, stocked, and ready for patient care.
