The UNC Emergency Medicine Scribe program was founded in late 2012 by emergency medicine providers at UNC as an effort to reduce documentation time and increase time spent on patient contact. Scribes are motivated undergraduates or recent graduates trained on medical documentation and ED flow to assist providers with efficiency. Scribes generally accompany one provider per shift to complete their charts and help department flow. Our providers include EM residents, attending physicians, and advanced practice providers (APPs). UNC EM scribes work in both the UNC Chapel Hill emergency department and the UNC Hillsborough emergency department.
