Mediterranean Shipping Company company history timeline

1970

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) was founded in Naples in 1970 as a private company by seafaring captain Gianluigi Aponte when he bought his first ship, Patricia, followed by Rafaela, with which Aponte began a shipping line operating between the Mediterranean and Somalia.

1978

In 1978, the headquarters was established in Geneva, Switzerland.

1988

In 1988, MSC enter the cruise business by buying the liner Monterey.

1989

In 1989, MSC bought Lauro Lines.

1995

In 1995, StarLauro Cruises was renamed MSC Cruises.

2008

2008 MSC Cruises is the first cruise company in the world to be awarded the coveted ‘6 Golden Pearls’ for its outstanding standards in environmental protection, health and safety.

2014

In December 2014, the MSC shipping line ranked number 6 in Lloyd's List Top 100 Most Influential People in Shipping.

2015

In June 2015 Maersk and MSC signed a vessel-sharing agreement on the Asia-Europe, trans-Pacific and trans-Atlantic trades.

In addition, the Lirica class ships were enlarged and renewed by Fincantieri under the €200m ”Renaissance Programme”, which was completed by late 2015.

2020

In December 2020, Søren Toft became MSC Chief Executive Officer.

2021

In December 2021, MSC is offering at least 5.7 billion euros for Bolloré Africa Logistics, a subsidiary of the Bolloré group.
