MedVet was founded in 1988 by Doctor William DeHoff and Doctor James W. Harrison as the Veterinary Hospital Operations of Central Ohio, Inc. d/b/a MedVet, to provide specialty veterinary services to the community.
Doctor Ethel Connelly was the first Native American woman to graduate with a DVM (1989). She continues to devote her career to caring for the pets of the Blackfoot community in Montana.
In 1990, a clinic located at 5747 Cleveland Avenue, was constructed to house the Columbus Veterinary Emergency Services (CVES), MedVet and Veterinary Diagnostics Laboratory, a veterinary reference lab.
In 1998, she became the Founding Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Western University.
In March 2009 MedVet opened a new 5,000 square feet Cancer Center in Columbus and was renamed the MedVet Medical & Cancer Center for Pets.
In August 2012, the MedVet Cincinnati, MedVet Columbus, and MedVet Dayton facilities were combined under the name of MedVet Medical & Cancer Centers for Pets.
In 2012, MedVet built and opened a new 25,000 square foot facility in Cincinnati (Fairfax) designed to accommodate growth and the addition of further specialties new to the Cincinnati region.
MedVet and its Louisiana partners upgraded the New Orleans emergency practice by adding specialty services and relocating to a new location which opened on February 1, 2013.
In January 2014, MedVet acquired Capital Veterinary Referral & Emergency Clinic, on the East side of Columbus, now known as MedVet Hilliard.
They later acquired Southeast and built a new medical center in New Orleans which opened July 18, 2016.
In 2016, the North Carolina State College of Veterinary Medicine established a scholarship in her name for two students from under-represented groups.
The series premiered in 2016 and follows Doctor Diarra Blue, Doctor Aubrey Ross, and Doctor Michael Lavigne.
In April 2017, MedVet expanded their Texas practices with the addition of MedVet Grapevine.
In July 2017, MedVet continued to grow their Northeast Ohio presence with the addition of MedVet Akron, MedVet Cleveland Northeast, and MedVet Cleveland West.
March 2018, MedVet expanded west into Idaho with the addition of WestVet Boise, and MedVet Northern Utah.
Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Doctor Arce made history as the first Puerto Rican veterinarian elected as AVMA president (2020-21). Doctor Arce brings 26 years of veterinary experience to his presidency.
