National certification and CPR certification are required within 6 months of graduation from recognized program, or within 6 months start date of employment. If the employee allows certification to lapse they must re-certify within 3 months from the expiration date or employment can be suspended or terminated. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions. Will complete additional training or demonstrate competency in skills for all age groups and populations served. Additional training to demonstrate competency will be required for specialty areas/equipment. Knowledge of anatomical structures and application skills in tissue handling, retracting, clamping, cutting, suturing, and exposure retracting in either the assistant or scrub role. Monitoring/Assessing performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action. Monitors the effectiveness and accuracy of surgical equipment and devices for optimum performance. The ability to maintain sustained hand and/or arm position while moving the opposite hand and/or arm. The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer). The ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to walk, stand for long periods of time, bend and reach. The employee is regularly required to assist in lifting and supporting patients/equipment (possibly 300 lbs. or more). The employee will frequently be required to lift weight of 5 to 50 pounds. The employee will frequently be required to use step stools to gain height for satisfactory performance. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to possess visual/auditory acuity to meet visual/auditory demands of the job. Mental Demands: High degree of mental stress. Responsibilities Ensures sterile environment and applies sterile and safe techniques. Assists in preparation and draping of the patient. Assists with operating room setup. Wears lead aprons during radiological surgical procedure. Always wears eye protection and personal protection equipment/uses hands free zone. Reports unsafe conditions. Disassembles and decontaminates instruments/supplies. Performs as a scrub nurse or assistant, anticipating surgeon's needs throughout. Plans for procedures by reviewing case cart and resource map. Sets up and passes instruments, sutures and supplies during surgical procedures. Identifies specimens with the surgeon and the circulating nurse, places in appropriate container that is properly labeled. Transports specimen to appropriate lab pickup area. Transports surgery patients as needed. Utilizes supplies and equipment in cost-effective manner. Maintains adequate supplies/par levels for assigned specialty items (i.e. mesh, staplers, special suture, and ortho systems). Updates resource maps on an ongoing basis. Collaborates with RN for correct sponge, needle, and instrument count. Achieves goals identified at previous annual or 90 day evaluation. Maintains proficiency in specialties and flexibility in all other areas. Attends meetings and in-services to further self-growth. Completes required Computer Based Learnings (CBL'S) on NetLearning Seeks information from literature and resource persons for all specialties. Maintains requirements for certification. Assists in instructing staff, students, and new employees. Adheres to departmental/DMH policies. Performs other duties as assigned. Regular attendance and punctuality. Unscheduled hours and weekly stay-lates. Participation in 24-hour call rotation.

Ensures operating suite is adequately prepared for procedure. Monitors PAR level of all surgical instruments and supplies. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies to surgeon during procedures ensuring quality patient care. The CST is also responsible for decontamination, cleaning, processing, and sterilization of supplies and equipment dispensed by the department following established infection control practices as appropriate. Assists the RN with prioritizing care of each patient and overall patient load; assists the RN with the care of patients in the immediate post-operative care unit. Informs RN/Surgeon if patient has any complaints during the surgical procedure. Prepares and prints OR schedule and pulls cases for the next day; reviews policies and procedures and assists the RN with updating or creating new preference cards. Prepares and properly labels medications being used on the back table during surgical procedures; informs surgeon of syringe contents before providing the syringe to the surgeon. Accurately assist in the circulator role and maintains a safe operating room environment; scrubs for all types of procedures and maintains knowledge of instruments, sutures and equipment needed; effectively functions in the assistant role. Checks OR/PACU equipment, including monitors, crash cart, sterilizers and warming units as assigned and per protocol; prepares instruments for sterilization and accurately operates all sterilizing units within the department; maintains knowledge and implements OR fire safety policy if required; Accurately pulls and sets up for surgical procedures and alerts others of special needs not available at the time of pulling; operates all equipment in the OR needed for surgical procedures such as ESU units, Lights, Tables, monitors, warming devices, and other instruments required. Functions in the central sterilizing department and properly cleanses, wraps and sterilizes all instruments to meet the surgical needs of the department. Sterile Processing Competency Performs a biological test on all sterilizing units with each load in the CS and immediate use sterilizer and daily in the Steris units. Surg Tech * Assists surgeons and nurses with patients, equipment preparation, aseptic technique, and surgical procedures in the operating room. * Prepares the operating room for surgery by assembling routine supplies, materials, instruments, and equipment; obtains special supplies indicated by physician. * Set up and operate a variety of specialized instrumentation, manual and powered equipment. * Follows procedures for pre and post-operative accounting of sharps, sponges and instruments used in the surgical set up. * Implements and evaluates care of pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients undergoing diagnostic and invasive surgical procedures. * Provides care to patients with complex health issues and serves as a clinical resource to staff. * Analyzes and anticipates less predictable outcomes of surgical interventions. * Leads service area-based committees. * Considered an expert in at least one specialty area and can competently handle multiple specialties. * Specialty areas include General Surgery, ENT, Robotics, Ophthalmology (Corneal; Retina Cell transplants), Complex GYN, Complex Ortho/Spine, Thoracic, and Vascular. * Participates in identifying cost containment activities. Monitors and maintains supplies and initiates purchases to ensure par levels. * Identifies more complex patient needs by reviewing procedure protocol, physician's request, and assessing the patient's physical needs. * Prioritizes procedure process and supplies for specialty group of patients. * Identifies verbally or in writing unusual incidents during patient care procedures and identifies complex procedure problems related to patient reaction, symptoms, or changes in needs based on patient reactions. * Plans for surgical procedures based on identified needs of surgeon and patient. * Implements intervention for identified patient problems as related to surgical procedure and patient needs. * Utilizes appropriate standards of care, and/or collaborative clinical pathways to guide the plan of care. * Determines the equipment, materials, and resources needed to meet the patient procedure plan. * Communicates patients' and staff needs and responses through written and verbal communication to management as appropriate. * Keeps the peri-operative team abreast of the procedure needs and progress. Maintains courteous and professional behavior in all interactions. * Participates in the development and revision of procedure protocols, unit-based forms and specialty clinical pathways. * Documents all aspects of care by following the established unit procedure. * Establishes and meets goals in one or more of the following areas: clinical practice, management, education, and/or research. * Active membership in professional organization. * Functions as a resource to resolve issues related to patient advocacy. We are seeking a capable Orthopaedic and Spine Operating Room Registered Nurse (RN) and Surgical First Assistant who has acquired broad experience in caring for patients, and has developed a sound understanding about the care of a particular patient population. Shift: 6:30am - 6:00pm Full Time/36 hours * Assists attending surgeon, surgical resident and/or physician's assistant during surgical procedures including retraction, hemostasis, suctioning, suturing, suture organization, wound management and other assistance as necessary. Assists in opening and closing the patient's spine. * Assists in opening and closing surgical wounds. * Performs debridement of primary and secondary closure of muscle flaps. * Employees in some areas may be required to assist with bone grafts, as well as, harvest and prepare bone graft for spinal fusion. * Assists in spine procedures including anterior cervical discectomy/fusion, posterior cervical fusion, anterior thoracic/lumbar decompression/fusion, posterior thoracic/lumbar decompression/fusion, and insertion of spinal instruments. * Preps, positions, catharizes, and drapes patients and assists in exposing and suturing wounds. * Complies with and adheres to departmental policies and procedures in accordance with state, federal, and organizational guidelines.\ Minimum Qualifications: * All nurses employed in roles requiring an unencumbered nursing license must have a valid, active license or temporary permit approved by the Georgia Licensing Board. * Successful completion of the Emory Surgical Assistant training program or a Registered Nurse/Physician's Assistant nationally certified as an Registered Nurse First Assistant. * BLS and Healthcare Provider certifications required.
