What You'll Do:
Prepare and organizes the operating room, equipment, instruments and supplies per the manufacturer's instructions for use as required for various surgical procedures; Adheres to standard precautions including the use of personal protective equipment
Anticipates and provides instruments and supplies to the surgical team during procedure(s)
Performs sponge, sharps, and instrument counts according to policy.
Prepares patient specimens and medications of sterile field according to policy.
Sets up and maintains an organized sterile field.
Utilizes proper body mechanics in moving, transporting, and positioning patients, stretchers, and/or tables in order to prevent injury to self, patient and other personnel.
Prepares sterile dressings as needed
Provide circulator with product packaging information for appropriate patient charging
Cleans and prepares surgical instruments for processing and transports them to the decontamination area
Assists with post procedure cleaning of the operative or other invasive procedure room and preparation of room for subsequent patients
What You'll Bring/Requirements:
Diploma/certificate from an approved Surgical Technologist program, an Associate's Degree in Surgical Technology, or an Associate's Degree in other healthcare related field
Maintain continuous certification in American Heart Association's BLS. Surgical Tech diploma/certification or an Associate's Degree in Surgical Technology, or an Associate's Degree or higher degree in a healthcare related field.

Education Requirements:
Graduate of a recognized Surgical Technologist program, or in the last semester of an approved program is required.
National certification and CPR certification are required within 6 months of graduation from recognized program, or within 6 months start date of employment. If the employee allows certification to lapse they must re-certify within 3 months from the expiration date or employment can be suspended or terminated.

Updates resource maps on an ongoing basis.
Collaborates with RN for correct sponge, needle, and instrument count.

The Surgical Technologist II acts as a member of the surgical team providing patient care to the patients undergoing surgical procedures in all areas, including a variety of complex procedures, by assisting the surgeon with instrumentation. *Handles specimens and medications using correct technique and according to departmental policy and procedure.
*Provides information related to care/preparation of surgical instruments/equipment for sterilization/disinfection procedures.
*Performs the necessary surgical counts on sharps, small items, instruments and sponges with the circulating nurse prior to opening, during, and after closing the incision.
*Prepares the surgical field by opening correct supplies and preparing instruments and equipment needed for the scheduled case. Assures all materials are available and in working order and verifies own skill in using equipment correctly.
*Provides indirect patient care activities such as patient transportation. Assist with standard work and cleaning at completion of procedure.
*Maintains aseptic technique; actively monitors situations that could lead to a breach in aseptic technique. Communicates and immediately corrects breaks in aseptic technique.
*Ensures that equipment is functioning properly and immediately notifies appropriate personnel of any problems. Tests equipment prior to use on field. Adheres to the LPCHS unit policies regarding equipment maintenance.
*Assists with restraining uncooperative/combative patient in a safe manner.
*Serves as a role model for Surgical Tech I.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.
Education: Completion of an accredited program recognized by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or formal structure surgical program (e.g., military services).

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Five (5) years post program experience as a Surgical Tech in an acute care setting with similar patient case load, to include two (2) years specifically in the LPCHS OR (Operating Room). The two (2) year LPCHS - OR - experience for external candidates/new hires, three (3) years of direct service experience in a particular service in need of an expert and six (6) months of LPCHS experience, in which case the two (2) year LPCHS OR experience could be waived.

The **Surgical Assistant/First Assistant** is responsible for assisting the surgeon under direct and indirect supervision throughout preoperative, intraoperative, and post-operative duties and procedures as needed. The surgical assistant/first assistant provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient.
The preoperative phase includes, but is not limited to safe positioning, assist circulator and anesthesia provider in preparation of the patient.
The intraoperative phase includes, but not limited to performing specific tasks according to individual surgeon preference utilizing appropriate techniques.
The postoperative phase includes, but not limited to, application of specific dressing material, assist in transfer of patient and following patient to recovery if needed or directed by surgeon.
Providing visualization of the operative site by the following, but not limited to:
+ Appropriate placement and securing of retractors with or without padding.
+ Packing with sponges.
+ Digital manipulation of tissue.
+ Suctioning, irrigating, or sponging.
+ Manipulation of suture materials (e.g. loops, tags, running sutures).
+ Proper use of body mechanics to prevent obstruction of the surgeons view.
+ Utilizing appropriate techniques to assist with hemostasis.
+ Permanent: clamping and/or cauterizing vessels or tissue; tying and/or ligating clamped vessels or tissue; applying hemostatic clips; placing local hemostatic agents.
+ Temporary: applying tourniquets and demonstrating awareness of the indications/contraindications for use with knowledge of side effects of extended use; applying vessel loops; applying non-crushing clamps; applying direct digital pressure.
+ Utilizing appropriate techniques to assist with closure of body planes.
+ Utilizing running or interrupted subcutaneous sutures with absorbable or non-absorbable material.
+ Utilizing subcuticular closure technique with or without adhesive skin closure strips.
+ Closing skin with method indicated by surgeon (suture, staples, etc.).
+ Postoperative subcutaneous injection of local anesthetic agent as directed by the surgeon.
+ Selecting and applying appropriate wound dressing: liquid or spray occlusive materials, absorbent material affixed with tape of circumferential wrapping; immobilizing dressing (soft or rigid).
+ Familiar with common positions related to the procedure and will be able to use the equipment necessary to provide the position: Fracture tables, Head stabilizers, Body stabilizer, C-arm extensions, and Any other equipment needed.
+ Upon completion of the procedure, the patient shall be evaluated for any possible damage from positioning which will include assessment of the skin.
+ The surgeon shall convey the exact position that will give the best exposure for the surgical procedure.
+ The surgical assistant will carry out this order.
+ Consideration will be given to the patient's comfort and safety.
+ Points of pressure shall be padded: elbows, heels, knees, eyes, face, and axillary region.
+ Circulation shall not be impaired. Nerve damage shall be guarded against.
**Minimum Requirements:**
+ Certification from surgical assisting programs accredited through ARC/STSA, ABSA, NSAA.
+ 2 years of surgical assistant/first assistant experience is required.
+ Some areas may require specialized experience. (i.e. in cardiothoracic surgery, two years of directly related experience is required).

Emory University Orthopaedics & Spine Hospitalutilizes 9 OR rooms with 12-23 cases per day. Coming this fall, expansion to 11 OR rooms! All cases are ortho and/or neuro spine.
We are seeking a capable **Orthopaedic and Spine Operating Room Registered Nurse (RN) and Surgical First Assistant** who has acquired broad experience in caring for patients, and has developed a sound understanding about the care of a particular patient population.
**Shift: 6:30am - 6:00pm**
**Full Time/36 hours**
+ Assists attending surgeon, surgical resident and/or physician's assistant during surgical procedures including retraction, hemostasis, suctioning, suturing, suture organization, wound management and other assistance as necessary. Assists in opening and closing the patient's spine.
+ Assists in opening and closing surgical wounds.
+ Performs debridement of primary and secondary closure of muscle flaps.
+ Employees in some areas may be required to assist with bone grafts, as well as, harvest and prepare bone graft for spinal fusion.
+ Assists in spine procedures including anterior cervical discectomy/fusion, posterior cervical fusion, anterior thoracic/lumbar decompression/fusion, posterior thoracic/lumbar decompression/fusion, and insertion of spinal instruments.
+ Preps, positions, catharizes, and drapes patients and assists in exposing and suturing wounds.
+ Complies with and adheres to departmental policies and procedures in accordance with state, federal, and organizational guidelines.\
**Minimum Qualifications:**
+ All nurses employed in roles requiring an unencumbered nursing license must have a valid, active license or temporary permit approved by the Georgia Licensing Board.
+ Successful completion of the Emory Surgical Assistant training program or a Registered Nurse/Physician's Assistant nationally certified as an Registered Nurse First Assistant.
+ BLS and Healthcare Provider certifications required.

The Surgical Assistant/First Assistant is responsible for assisting the surgeon under direct and indirect supervision throughout preoperative, intraoperative, and post-operative duties and procedures as needed. The surgical assistant/first assistant provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient.
The preoperative phase includes, but is not limited to safe positioning, assist circulator and anesthesia provider in preparation of the patient.
The intraoperative phase includes, but not limited to performing specific tasks according to individual surgeon preference utilizing appropriate techniques.
The postoperative phase includes, but not limited to, application of specific dressing material, assist in transfer of patient and following patient to recovery if needed or directed by surgeon.
Providing visualization of the operative site by the following, but not limited to:
* Appropriate placement and securing of retractors with or without padding.
* Packing with sponges.
* Digital manipulation of tissue.
* Suctioning, irrigating, or sponging.
* Manipulation of suture materials (e.g. loops, tags, running sutures).
* Proper use of body mechanics to prevent obstruction of the surgeons view.
* Utilizing appropriate techniques to assist with hemostasis.
* Permanent: clamping and/or cauterizing vessels or tissue; tying and/or ligating clamped vessels or tissue; applying hemostatic clips; placing local hemostatic agents.
* Temporary: applying tourniquets and demonstrating awareness of the indications/contraindications for use with knowledge of side effects of extended use; applying vessel loops; applying non-crushing clamps; applying direct digital pressure.
* Utilizing appropriate techniques to assist with closure of body planes.
* Utilizing running or interrupted subcutaneous sutures with absorbable or non-absorbable material.
* Utilizing subcuticular closure technique with or without adhesive skin closure strips.
* Closing skin with method indicated by surgeon (suture, staples, etc.).
* Postoperative subcutaneous injection of local anesthetic agent as directed by the surgeon.
* Selecting and applying appropriate wound dressing: liquid or spray occlusive materials, absorbent material affixed with tape of circumferential wrapping; immobilizing dressing (soft or rigid).
* Familiar with common positions related to the procedure and will be able to use the equipment necessary to provide the position: Fracture tables, Head stabilizers, Body stabilizer, C-arm extensions, and Any other equipment needed.
* Upon completion of the procedure, the patient shall be evaluated for any possible damage from positioning which will include assessment of the skin.
* The surgeon shall convey the exact position that will give the best exposure for the surgical procedure.
* The surgical assistant will carry out this order.
* Consideration will be given to the patient's comfort and safety.
* Points of pressure shall be padded: elbows, heels, knees, eyes, face, and axillary region.
* Circulation shall not be impaired. Nerve damage shall be guarded against.
Minimum Requirements:
* Certification from surgical assisting programs accredited through ARC/STSA, ABSA, NSAA.
* 2 years of surgical assistant/first assistant experience is required.
* Some areas may require specialized experience. (i.e. in cardiothoracic surgery, two years of directly related experience is required).
