What you'll do
Under the supervision of the Facilities Dept leadership, the PlantOperator I, is responsible for the safe, reliable operation of the boiler and steam plant, and associated equipment.
* Maintains assigned equipment
* Performs maintenance repairs as needed
* Assists trades, grounds keeping and hospital staff
* Completes all assigned inspections and rounds in timely manner
* Liaison between outside contractors, vendors, and staff
* Uses safe practices when performing job duties
* Performs water chemistry tests daily
* Multiple tank preventative maintenance and monitoring
* Other duties as assigned

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION:
Responsible for monitoring and operating the Boiler Plant.
Ensures continuous steam supply to Ellis and Sunnyview Hospitals for the heating of buildings and domestic water tanks, kitchen equipment, and sterilization of instruments.
Monitors and records all specific readings, temperatures, pressures, water levels, water and fuel consumed, steam consumed and where steam was supplied, using strict specific specifications.
Tests and treats boiler water with chemicals, blow-down boilers and record all test results in the log book.
Adjusts and maintains parameters as needed.
Perform repairs and preventative maintenance on pumps, compressors, valves, meters, water conditioning equipment and boilers.
Replaces defective gaskets and seals on related equipment.
Prepares boilers for yearly inspections consisting of water sash, specific water tubes, sweep and clean fire box flue passageway using lock out tag out procedures and personal protective equipment as necessary for all routine evaluations.
Tests emergency power equipment, document any conditions outside of normal parameters and informs manager of such.
Dispatches, records and responds to all maintenance trouble calls on second and thirds shifts.
Notifies manager of any operational problems.
Assists in snow removal as necessary, contacts necessary personnel when fire, or a disaster has been issued.
Responsible for general cleaning and painting of walls, floors and equipment.
Makes routine round of hospital mechanical rooms documenting pressures, temperatures, flows and off normal conditions as per training and round sheets.
Operates the pneumatic tube system and hospital energy management computer.
Operates the hospital Simplex Fire system and the fire pump.
Attends inservices and safety training as required by management.
Assists in reviewing and developing department policies and procedures.
Coaches, mentors and trains staff, conducts meetings as needed, and administers performance reviews and discipline.
Participates in the interview and hiring process of prospective candidates.
Complete required training as assigned.
Complies with Hospital and department policies, work rules and requirements.
Adheres to patient privacy policies and procedures, maintain confidentiality.

Uses the Facility Work Order System, follows "Lock Out - Tag Out" procedures, and assists with other facility tasks, including swing operator duties at the main hospital.
Required Skilled and Experience:
Education - High School Diploma / GED
Experience - Ability to operate high pressure boiler systems. Recommended is a minimum three years' experience in operating high-pressure boilers.
Licensure - A clean valid NYS Driver's license.
Physical Requirements
This position requires the ability to lift objects. The physical ability to rapidly respond to equipment failures within the plant is required. Work may include climbing ladders and working from heights above the boilers. The candidate will have the ability to work inside the plant with a warmer than normal environment which is not air conditioned. Good communication skills and the ability to work independently are required for this position.
Location and Travel Requirements
Location: Main Campus Steam Plant
This position will be 2nd shift and may have to cover other shifts.
Pay Range Disclosure:
$29.00 to $37.00 per hour
