Provides both a personalized and comprehensive array of services and supports to the individuals we serve, including but not limited to assisting those who are in crisis, who have experienced trauma, or those diagnosed with a mental illness. Assists individuals with identifying supports to meet their basic needs and makes referrals to community behavioral health services, including substance abuse programs as needed.

The Washoe County Employees Association (WCEA) Non-Supervisory Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) covers the Mental Health Counselor II positions at Human Services Agency and the Sheriff's Office.
Juvenile Services falls under the direction of the District Court, and as such, Juvenile Services is not a part of Washoe County's merit personnel system, and Juvenile Services employees are not members of a bargaining unit. However, full-time or part-time permanent employment with the Department of Juvenile Services offers the same attractive benefit package and salary schedule as any other Washoe County Department.
Background checks will be conducted on selected applicants through the State of Nevada and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Per the Washoe County Background and Reference Checks Policy, new and rehired employees are required to submit to a fingerprint based background investigation. Effective January 1, 2025, the $39.00 fee associated with this background investigation will be paid by the employee (if applicable) and deducted automatically from the first paycheck. Employment is contingent upon the results of the background check, although a record of conviction will not necessarily bar an applicant from employment.
Additionally, Human Services Agency will run a background check via the Child Abuse and Neglect Registry and employees will be required to have a tuberculosis test. The cost of the test will be borne by the selected applicant(s).
Additionally, for positions with Juvenile Services, a CPR/First Aid certification is required at the time of appointment; after the interview, top candidates must pass a background investigation which includes:
* Submit a set of fingerprints

* Candidates must submit to a TB test at own expense upon offer of employment.
Certain positions in the Sheriff's Office have access to criminal justice agency systems including NCIC and CJIS. Job Description
The Intake Counselor will help assess the needs of walk-in and telephone callers and ensure their referral to the service or resource to best address their needs.
Responds to telephone and face-to-face inquiries from persons seeking mental health care or information about mental health-related services.
Conducts screenings or assessments to determine needs of treatment and facilitates the patient's access to the appropriate level of care and setting.
Assumes responsibility in maintaining a safe, orderly and therapeutic physical environment for all patients.
Demonstrates good skills in assessing client's crisis and clinical indicators via phone and in-person - documenting such. Prepares written report of assessment results in a timely manner (immediately following completed assessment) and includes recommendations for the level of care and treatment needs.
Makes appropriate interventions during assessments, and crisis situations with clients, family/friends and other professional staff.
Assists clients who are not admitted into a program with follow through of clinical referrals and recommendations.
Provides pertinent clinical information to physician and program staff who will be reviewing the patient, to ensure a smooth transition for the patient.
Requirements
Masters degree in Social Work or related field required
Nevada State Clinical licensure (LCSW, LSW, RN, etc.) preferred
Experience in a Behavioral Health facility strongly preferred
Knowledge of diagnostic criteria
Knowledgeable of patient rights and laws pertaining to mental health

This position is responsible for developing and conducting assessments, diagnosis of mental health conditions, and treatment plans appropriate for designated individuals, families and groups; provides counseling and follow-up services.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
· Works directly with children, adolescents and adults suffering from a range of mental health and provides a good standard of practice and care.
· Evaluates clients with a full range of psychological problems, utilizing appropriate assessment tools for diagnosis and treatment planning.
· Collaborates on cases with other mental health and medical professionals with regard to clinical therapy mode. Assesses clients documenting in the electronic health record using DSM V diagnosis, and discusses treatment plans.
· Provides a broad range of therapeutic services to individual, groups and families, as indicated. Including knowledge of Substance Abuse Treatment, Domestic Violence, Anger Management, and Effective Parenting.
· Attends patient care meetings as needed.
· Networks with schools and local agencies to develop treatment plans for clients.
· Ability to respond to mental health crisis and on-call responsibilities.
· Engages in community outreach and case management.
· Training and knowledge in behavioral healthcare using empirically supported therapies including. Minimum Qualifications:

· Minimum of two years of successful professional counseling experience.
· Must possess and maintain a valid California or Nevada driver's license or capable of obtaining one within thirty days (30) of employment.

The Intake Counselor will help assess the needs of walk-in and telephone callers and ensure their referral to the service or resource to best address their needs.
Responds to telephone and face-to-face inquiries from persons seeking mental health care or information about mental health-related services.
Conducts screenings or assessments to determine needs of treatment and facilitates the patient's access to the appropriate level of care and setting.
Assumes responsibility in maintaining a safe, orderly and therapeutic physical environment for all patients.
Demonstrates good skills in assessing client's crisis and clinical indicators via phone and in-person - documenting such. Prepares written report of assessment results in a timely manner (immediately following completed assessment) and includes recommendations for the level of care and treatment needs.
Makes appropriate interventions during assessments, and crisis situations with clients, family/friends and other professional staff.
Assists clients who are not admitted into a program with follow through of clinical referrals and recommendations.
Provides pertinent clinical information to physician and program staff who will be reviewing the patient, to ensure a smooth transition for the patient.
Requirements
Masters degree in Social Work or related field required
Nevada State Clinical licensure (LCSW, LSW, RN, etc.) preferred
Experience in a Behavioral Health facility strongly preferred
Knowledge of diagnostic criteria
Knowledgeable of patient rights and laws pertaining to mental health
