Methodist University is seeking to hire a Mental Health Counselor for its new School of Medicine in Fayetteville, NC. The Methodist University Cape Fear Valley Health School of Medicine (MU CFVH) is a candidate program of the LCME, with an anticipated start date of Summer 2026 for its charter class. Our mission is to prepare our graduates to be socially accountable, community-engaged, evidence-based, compassionate, and equity-focused physician leaders who will contribute to mitigating health disparities and improving health outcomes in southeastern North Carolina or wherever they may practice.
The Mental Health Counselor plans and organizes Office of Behavioral Health programs and activities at the Methodist University Cape Fear Valley Health School of Medicine, ensuring that assigned functions fulfill institutional goals and objectives. The Office of Behavioral Health is under the organizational umbrella of the Office of Student Experience. The Mental Health Counselor primarily provides clinical services within the Department of Behavioral Health, offering psychosocial support and direct clinical services to Methodist University Cape Fear Valley Health medical students.
Key Responsibilities:
Coordinate the day-to-day operations of the MU CFVH SOM Office of Behavioral Health.
Supports the Methodist University-approved policies and ensures that they are adhered to.
Ensures compliance with federal, state, university, college, and other outside agency rules and regulations.
Provides assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of psychosocial/behavioral health issues for MU CFVH SOM students.
Provides on-call services to MU CFVH SOM administration.
Provides crisis intervention for MU CFVH SOM students during regular operating hours.
Appropriately refers clients to community resources if needed.
Maintains knowledge of current literature related to mental health and behavioral medicine.
Attends professional conferences and is appropriately involved in state and/or national behavioral health and/or behavioral medicine meetings.
Engages in continuing education as required to maintain active clinical licensure.
Develops expertise with the EMR system for scheduling and confidentiality of student records.
Ensures the confidentiality of student records in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
Submits monthly utilization reports to the Senior Associate Dean for Student Experience and Director of Health and Counseling Services.
Assists in accreditation functions, including document creation, data collection, data entry, education of staff on accreditation, and other accreditation-related functions.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Master's degree in social work, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Clinical Psychology, or related licensable field. North Carolina clinical licensure is required. Associate licensed clinician (LMHCA or LCSWA) considered.
Candidates with a Clinical/Counseling Psychology degree must come from an APA-accredited program.
PhD or EdD preferred.
Preferred experience in higher education, health sciences.

Program Overview

Position Overview - Ideal candidates would reside in Moore County.

In this position you will work in a Child Development Center, School Age Center, and Youth Center supporting Fort Bragg. Candidates must be local to the base or willing to relocate to become local and be licensed at the independent level as a Social Worker (LCSW), Therapist (LMFT), or Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC/LPC).
This position has the primary responsibility of providing the full breadth of Child and Youth Behavioral (CYB) counseling services to children of all ages of military service members and their families at military installations to include civilian expeditionary work force and their families (when activated). These services may include non-medical counseling, training/health and wellness presentations, consultation with parents, personnel at child development centers, and consultation to installation command regarding behavioral health issues affecting children and youth. CYB counselors will be assigned to child development centers, youth programs, summer camps, and on demand assignments. The counselors work closely with the installation and military branch Points of Contact (POC) to assure that the program is provided within scope and meets the needs of the installation.
* Provides non-medical, short-term, solution focused counseling directly to eligible children and youth of service members at assigned primary and secondary locations. Services include assessment, brief counseling and consultation, action planning, referral to resources (assuring linkage as appropriate), and follow-up as indicated.
* CYB counselors will also have a focus on supporting the staff and personnel of Child Development Centers (CDC), youth programs and summer camps (if available/assigned) as well as providing parent support, training, and guidance.
* Provides training and health and wellness presentations, participate in health fairs and other base/installation activities focused on children and youth.
* Enters counselor activity data daily through smart phone or web application to assure that reporting is accurate from assigned installation while maintaining confidentiality and anonymity of service/family member.
* Establishes and maintains working relationships with community resources focused on children and youth and provides appropriate linkages. Consistently visible within the assigned location(s) which allows MFLC services to be accessible. When working with children, counselor must abide by line-of-sight protocol. (Another adult with responsibility for the child must be able to see the counselor and child they are working with at all times.)
* Partners with POC to provide CYB services in a manner that addresses the needs of the installation/facility. Develops an effective and professional working relationship with the installation/facility POC.
* Manages duty to warn and restricted reporting situations according to Department of Defense (DoD) protocol and staffs the cases with Regional Supervisor/Regional Director.
* Communicates with Regional Supervisors and participates in regular individual and group supervision, sharing information regarding trends and issues on the installations and in facilities to which the counselor is assigned. Responds to critical incidents and special requests as directed by the POC and approved by the Office of Secretary of Defense (OSD) program manager. The CYB will flex schedule to respond to urgent requests as needed or at the request of the Regional Supervisor/Regional Director.
* Participates in regular in-services/training, Quality Improvement committees, initiatives, studies, pilot programs other contract activities as assigned/appropriate as directed by the customer and/or Magellan. This includes participation in pilot program certification and training processes, completion of activity documentation, integration of pilot activities in non-medical counseling work, and the utilization of applicable technology to complete required activities.

The Family Centered Treatment Therapist provides quality psychotherapeutic services to children, adolescents, and families utilizing the Family Centered Treatment model.
Provide Family Centered Treatment (FCT) Clinical Services as per the service definition and model fidelity requirements.
FCT Certification is required and must be completed within one year of employment in order to continue to provide FCT services and maintain employment with Health Connect America (HCA).
Complete FCT Checkoffs and other internal trainings within designated deadlines. Trainings are assigned and monitored through an e-learning system.
Deliver FCT clinical services to children, adolescents, and their families, primarily in their living environments, with a family focus.
Provide 24/7 on-call coverage to a caseload of families and children. Service is regularly provided in the home and community and will require service provision at the convenience of the child and family requiring a flexible work schedule.
Complete all required Clinical Records and FCT documents with the child and family and ensure the documents are entered/uploaded timely in the Electronic Health Record, according to company standards.
Develop Service Plan in coordination with Treatment Team Process and maintain the plan per designated authorization processes in the clinician's area of service. Provide psychoeducation as indicated in the Service Plan.

Assist the families and children to establish weekly goals and help them to identify the steps that need to be taken to reach the established goals.
Develop and coordinate discharge plan based on treatment, indicating all relevant aftercare needs and plans. Access community resources that would be beneficial to client aftercare needs.
Coordinate and oversee the initial and ongoing assessment activities.
Convene the Treatment Team for Service Plan.
Consult with identified medical (e.g., primary care and psychiatric) and non-medical (e.g., Dept. of Child Services, school, Dept. of Juvenile Justice) providers; engage community and natural supports and include their input in the person-centered planning process.
Provide and coordinate behavioral health services and other interventions for the youth or other family members with other behavioral health professionals and Treatment Team members.
Qualifications
A Master's Degree in human services or a related field is required for this position.

Conducts comprehensive substance abuse assessments considering the relationship between substance use and mental health.
Assesses and tracks beneficiary's stages of change readiness and stages of treatment.

Facilitates access to 12-step groups and other community supports.
