General Job Information This position is located in the Health & Human Services Department, Service Design and Engagement, Public Services Division at the DC Public Library (DCPL). The Health & Human Services Department focuses on providing enhanced library services, social services, and public health services to the District's most vulnerable residents and to support staff in their work with these patrons. The Department does this using trauma-informed and harm-reduction approaches to serving patrons. For the past five years, DCPL has offered peer support to customers experiencing homelessness, mentalhealth, and substance use challenges. Currently, three DC Department of Behavioral Health Certified Peer Support Specialists, led by a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, provide emotional support and referrals to services to DCPL's unhoused customers and those with co-occurring disorders.
The MentalHealth Specialist is part of an interdisciplinary team that includes the Health & Human Services Manager, the Health & Human Services Assistant Manager, and three Certified Peer Support Specialists. Responsibilities include providing a wide variety of social work supports, focusing on making connections with customers inside DCPL library branches. Customers seeking services could include adults experiencing homelessness, adults with dual-diagnosis, transition-aged youth from 18-24 years, teens, and families. Services may include one-on-one brief therapy, group therapy, referrals to other services, and mentalhealth assessments.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
* Outreach to customers in branches to promote mentalhealth services. Work with branch managers and direct supervisors to create promotional materials that promote mentalhealth services at the branch and strategize ways to engage customers.
* Take referrals from DCPL Health & Human Services Team, and branch staff to support library customers.
* Meet with customers to provide brief mentalhealth therapeutic services in a non-traditional setting.
* Organize group therapy sessions that can include but are not limited to general group therapy, art therapy, biblio-therapy, women's groups, men's groups, teen talk groups
* Maintain confidential notes using an electronic records system.
* Refer customers to other resources in the library, such as Peer Support/WE Care Program, digital navigator services, computer classes, employment resources, or other programming and services available at the library.
* Refer customers to other mentalhealth supports in the community, housing supports, other social services using online tools and knowledge of other resources in the community.
* Provide referrals to agencies, governmental and non-governmental, which may address the following customer needs: housing, food, mentalhealth, medical care, clothing, legal, and other social services.
* Prepares referral documents, assists customers in accessing services, provides advocacy, and initiates follow-up to ensure customers receive satisfactory service.
* Utilize deep knowledge of the community and other district governmental resources available and established connections with resources to make quality referrals when necessary.

* Maintain and support continuous quality improvement activities, including assisting with client satisfaction surveys.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

The incumbent must possess a master's degree in social work or counseling and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker license (LCSW) and/or Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCP) certification. A minimum of five (5) years of experience is preferred. At least one (1) year at the next lower grade level (CS 11; CS 9 and below will not be considered). In addition, the following is required:
* Knowledge of the theoretical concepts, principles, and techniques of the psychological, social, and rehabilitative aspects of treating mentalhealth problems. Knowledge of psychiatric, psychological, and medical terminology used in the assessment, diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of mentalhealth problems.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS

Required qualifications for the role

All APHA interns also work on the Association's Get Ready campaign, writing blog posts and working on group projects each semester.
At the end of the internship period, the intern will have produced numerous articles, news quizzes and a solid package of clips. Qualifications The Nation's Health offers one fall, spring and summer internship, as well as combined journalism/communication internships during the fall and spring semesters, to qualified students. Experience with deadlines, Associated Press/journalism style is a plus, as is prior writing and reporting experience and a willingness to learn. Opportunities for internships are available year-round and last for a three- to four-month period. To assure that the intern maximizes her or his experience, we require that students work a minimum of 28 hours a week. All APHA internships are unpaid, but credit is available.
