The Mentor will have a portfolio of participants 7-12th grade who have been directly or secondarily affected by street violence to provide mentoring, support, and advocacy. Mentoring occurs in one-on-one, group settings, and in and after school hours. The Mentor is responsible for the facilitation of high-quality programming, planning and implementation of events/activities that may include sports, and connections to other social services with participants. May require some local travel (reimbursable). This position is in-person.
Job Responsibilities
Assures youth participation in information sessions to explain expectations, roles, and responsibilities of participants.
Assures planning and implementation of outreach and recruiting of youth to program as needed.
Builds healthy, positive, supportive relationships with participants modeling positive behaviors and offering positive alternatives to violence.
Exposes participants to new experiences in education, art, sports, science, etc.
Creates impactful efforts toward goals and objectives.
Serves as a liaison and youth advocate with families, school administrators, and social and youth services agencies.
Assists in creation, implementation, and monitoring of progress of case-plans, goals, and objectives set with youth and family/school.
Keeps a full, updated mentor caseload determined with Supervisor and Data team.
Engages youth in an individual goal plan and assists in building a safety net of services and opportunities for the participant including but not limited to job development, stipend programs, mental health services, GED services, housing, etc.
Produces documents, receipts, data reporting, and correspondence regarding activities and progress as necessary for consistent evaluation of program and timely report submittal, including participant paperwork.
Regularly assisting youth to address challenges, celebrate milestones, assists in identifying goals and problem solving.
Assures lessons provided or created are relevant and appropriate.
Participates in on-site visits, regular check-ins, and break-out planning meetings with team and Supervisor.
Performs home-visits as needed to communicate with mentee and/or mentee family.
Is aware of partner organizations and how to use “warm referral” network for linkages.
Assures documentation of all participant contacts and services provided and assists data team and development team with data collection and required reporting.
Documents detailed participant case-notes and other items as assigned.
May participate in social media, video, writings, and promotions for programming.
Plans and organizes youth programming (in and/or out of school) and monitors youth enrollment, growth, and completion.
Maintains accuracy of budget and spending plan and assures spending within target.
Participates in required evaluations and audits.

The Street Outreach Mentor will work to gain trust of the community and the highest risk individuals to help prevent shootings and retaliatory violence, and to provide linkages and robust accompaniment to prosocial alternatives including activities, jobs, education, case management, and social services. As a member of a team, the Street Outreach Mentor is responsible for reaching out to the highest risk individuals in the community and working with them to prevent violence by mediating conflicts, modeling prosocial behaviors, engaging them in positive activities and accompaniment through the case management process. Some weekends and some on-call in response to crisis situations will be required. Flexible schedule required. Focus neighborhoods include Little Village, Pilsen, and Brighton Park. May require some local travel (reimbursable). Pay commensurate with experience. This position is in-person. 2 positions available.
Job Responsibilities
Works with outreach colleagues and supervisor to identify potential participants who are the highest risk individuals, and the people who know them.
Maintains a caseload of 10-15 high-risk participants.
Participants and family range in age, participants primarily being between 14-24.
Develops and maintains supportive and effective relationships with participant caseload.
Works to intervene in circumstances in which violence is likely.
Works as a member of a team, communicating all relevant information to team members and supervisors instantly.
Develops and delivers one-to-one support sessions and facilitates circles with participants to support participants in resolving conflicts and adopting prosocial behaviors.
Connects participants with case-managers to provide linkages and support for individuals to enhance their use of opportunities and programs in the community (job programs, GED, drug treatment, mentoring, etc.). May provide linkages as well.
Provides client accompaniment to court, social services, etc.
Participates, as necessary, in organizing responses to shootings and increasing visibility when shootings take place (developing networks with other outreach programs to coordinate an inclusive and strategic response).
Investigates causes of shootings to assist in mediating situations and preventing retaliation between individuals and groups and provides documentation.
Identifies and diffuses “hot spots” for shootings and violence (conducting line of sight surveys with residents and key stakeholders to identify areas frequented by high-risk clients) and provides documentation.
Strategizes with outreach team and supervisor to develop ongoing strategy to respond to conflicts and violence, noting important anniversary dates or other key events.
Outreach to the community (individually and as a team member) to build strong relationships with youth, residents, businesses, and community groups.
Works closely with referring partners and any other stakeholders to ensure that goals are met.
Maintains positive relationships with stakeholders.
Responds to shootings in other communities, when necessary, working with relevant outreach programs.
Documents shootings, retaliations, and other acts of violence prevented, and conflicts mediated.

Collaborate with the La DePaulia student editors to maintain high journalistic standards and meet publication deadlines

✨ What You'll Do
Provide daily care, structure, and supervision for at-risk youth
Create a warm, supportive home environment that builds confidence and emotional wellbeing
Teach essential life skills-communication, decision-making, problem-solving
Support youth through emotional and behavioral challenges with compassion and consistency
Prepare meals, plan engaging activities, and build family routines
Manage household needs including budgeting, shopping, and transportation
Work closely with educators, specialists, and a strong support team
📅 Work Schedule (example)
This is a live-in caregiver role with a consistent rotation:
5 days on / 2 days off, plus an additional day off every 4 weeks
Mornings: prepare youth for the school day
School hours: paperwork, meetings, training, personal time, etc.
Afternoons/Evenings: homework help, meals, activities, and family routines, etc.
Weekends/Summer: outings, sports, volunteering, and memorable traditions, etc.
💵 Pay & Benefits
Salary: $43,500-$45,000

PEER MENTOR HAROLD WASHINGTON COLLEGE CITY OF CHICAGO COLLEGES City Colleges of Chicago (CCC), the largest community college system in Illinois, is made up of seven colleges and five satellite sites, providing more than 70,000 students each year access to a quality, affordable education. Harold Washington College is a student-centered institution that empowers all members of its community through accessible and affordable academic advancement, career development and personal enrichment. We are actively seeking CPS alumni to join the team as Students on the Academic Rise (S.O.A.R.) Peer Mentor to join our team. The ideal S.O.A.R Peer Mentor will be detail-orientated, a quick learner, have solid time management and leadership skills and be flexible. This position requires the ability to speak one-on-one and in group settings to new and returning students about the Harold Washington College experience, share your own personal experiences and help new students transition more comfortably and successfully into college.
Duties and Responsibilities:
* Under the direction of the program supervisor and Peer Coaches, the S.O.A.R. Peer Mentor Student will act as the CCC student representative to prospective students, current students, faculty, staff, and the public.
* Provides quality customer service to prospective, current and continuing Chicago Public School (CPS) mentees through outreach, mentoring interaction, campus events, and other engagement opportunities.
* Answers questions that students may have about student life at one of the City Colleges of Chicago
* Provides information about admissions, class registration, withdrawal and other academic transactions.
* Provides information to students about student resources and extracurricular activities.
* Participates in on-campus college recruiting activities.
* Copies materials used for recruiting activities, admissions, registration and orientation.
* Sets a positive/supportive introduction to the college for new and returning students.
* Attends training sessions and meetings as required.
* Adheres to the City Colleges of Chicago Customer Service Excellence Standards.
Minimum Qualifications:
* High School Diploma required from a Chicago Public Schools network high school
* Knowledge of City Colleges of Chicago
* Excellent oral communication skills.
* Excellent customer service skills
* Commits to satisfying internal and external customers.
* Promotes a positive role model and favorable public image as City Colleges of Chicago representative
* Good interpersonal skills with a positive attitude and demonstrably self-motivated.
Eligibility Requirements:
* Applicants must be 16 years or older, have work permit consent, and eligible to work in the United States
* Applicants must be actively attending Harold Washington College and remain an enrolled, HW Home Campus student, or recent gradutate to complete an academic year with their mentees
* Applicants must be enrolled in a minimum of 3-credit semester hours
* Applicants must be pursuing an approved educational credential, degree, or certificate
* Applicants must have and maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA (waived for first semester new students)
* Applicants must be in "good standing" - no City Colleges of Chicago academic restrictions
* Applicants must not be current Full or Part-time employees of the City Colleges of Chicago
* All positions are "employment at-will"
Salary Range: $17.00 Per Hour
Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as other factors such as internal equity.
