Friends of the Children - Colorado is looking for a passionate, committed, Friend (professional mentor). Our mission is to impact generational change by empowering youth who are facing the greatest obstacles through relationships with highly trained, full-time professional mentors-12+ years-no matter what.
Basic Function:
We are currently seeking a mentor to serve as a positive adult role model to eight elementary children and develop loving, caring, and sustained relationships with each child. For each child, a Friend will set positive expectations; nurture and promote each child's strengths, talents, and abilities; help ensure physical and emotional well-being; teach life and academic skills; provide enrichment activities; and model responsible behavior. A Friend will fully document activities and participate in the ongoing evaluation process. Friends will work primarily one-on-one with the children they serve, while also building trusting, supportive relationships with parents/caregivers. A Friend must know, understand, honor, and support the organization's mission, vision, values, and principles, and be able to clearly articulate the organization's function.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
* Develop and sustain a long-term, caring, protective, and loving relationship with each child.
* Spend time with children, one-on-one.
* Partner with parents/caregivers to provide concrete and social emotional supports for the family.
* Set realistic expectations and goals based on each child's strengths, talents, abilities, and needs.
* Teach life skills and help develop a talent/skill/area of interest with each child.
* Provide enrichment resources and activities that include opportunities for identity development.
* Develop positive relationships with families, teachers, and others involved in each child's life.
* Reinforce basic academic skills.
* Maintain a 40-hour work schedule that includes afternoons, evenings, and weekends (normal working days are Tuesday through Saturday with Sundays and Mondays off).
* Maintain spending within budgetary guidelines.
* Complete, distribute, and collect time summaries, activity journals, short-term plans, expense reports, and evaluations materials accurately and in a timely manner.
* Attend and actively participate in team meeting and staff functions.
* Maintain First Aid/CPR certification.
* Transport children in personal vehicle as required for mentoring activities.
* Provide information and support to the development and executive team on related activities. Fulfill other responsibilities as requested.
The ideal candidate will have the following Education, Experience, and Abilities:
* 2 or 4-year degree
* Alternatively, at least seven years' progressive experience working with children and families will be considered in lieu of a college degree
* Willingness to commit for a minimum of three years.
* Bilingual Spanish language skills are preferred
* Advocate to secure additional resources, opportunities, and services for youth as appropriate
* Assist with systems navigation in schools to secure conditions for optimal academic success

Working Hours and Conditions:
This is a full-time, non-exempt position.
Due to the nature of a Friend's role, the work hours are somewhat non-traditional, and may include late afternoon, evening, and weekend work.
* We recognize that each Friend's daily work schedule will vary due to the unusual nature of the role and the needs of the individual children being served.
* The program requires that you see each of your assigned children both in and outside of school and/or daycare, for an average of four hours each week, although how you accomplish that is at your discretion within established program guidelines.
* Friends must be comfortable actively engaging in activities with youth in community settings such as parks, libraries, and schools.
As part of Friends' work with youth, they are required to transport children in their personal vehicles as required for mentoring activities. Children's car seats and mileage reimbursements are provided. Friends are required to maintain a current driver's license, good driving record, and vehicle insurance.

Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation's leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The CSU Early Childhood Center ( ECC ) is a laboratory school with a three-fold mission to a) offer a developmentally appropriate, Reggio Emilia-inspired learning environment for young children; b) prepare university students for careers in the field of early childhood; and c) provide opportunities for research related to children, families, and early childhood education. Each year, the ECC serves approximately 150 children (ages 6 weeks to 6 years), while simultaneously training students from various departments across the CSU campus including Food Science and Human Nutrition; Human Development and Family Studies; Occupational Therapy; the School of Education; and the School of Theatre, Music and Dance.
Housed within CSU's Department of Human Development and Family Studies, the ECC has been serving children and families in the Fort Collins community since 1929 and is dedicated to working in partnership with families to ensure a quality educational experience for children. We are a Reggio Emilia-inspired program, providing an emergent approach to educating children that is play-based and child-directed.
Position Summary
The Department of Human Development and Family Studies seeks applications throughout the year from individuals who are interested in obtaining non-tenure track teaching positions within the CSU Early Childhood Center working with young children between the ages of 6 weeks to 6 years. ECC teachers adhere to the mission, policies, and procedures of the ECC as well as State of Colorado licensing requirements and NAEYC accreditation standards while implementing a Reggio Emilia-inspired approach.
These are full-time, 12-month appointments with competitive salaries and full benefits including health insurance, paid vacations, and 9 free credits of CSU tuition per year. The role of a Mentor Teacher is to provide management of the classroom, supervision of intern and practicum students, and guidance of Classroom Teachers and Assistant Teachers. The role of a Classroom Teacher is to work with a Mentor Teacher to provide management of the classroom and guidance of Assistant Teachers.

Qualifications for a Mentor Teacher include:

In order to increase the benefits of this mentor-mentee relationship, the following dispositions are necessary:
The mentee will take the initiative to reach out to the mentor and express honestly any struggles he/she is experiencing.
The mentee must correspond in a timely manner with his/her mentor. This expectation includes responding to emails, texts, and calls within 24 hours to ensure that the mentor can give adequate feedback and stay up to date with what is occurring in the mentee's professional life.
The mentee must be open to feedback from his/her mentor. The feedback is meant to ensure that the mentees can be the best teacher that God has called them to be. Being open to feedback means also putting into practice the feedback that has been given as a way to improve and grow.
Mentors will observe their Fellows in the classroom regularly throughout the school year. Lesson plans for each observation must be submitted to their mentor the night before.
Fellows and mentors will schedule a follow-up phone call upon completion of each observation.
Fellows will collaborate with and share all classroom expectations and procedures with their mentor before the start of the school year.
Fellows will collaborate with and share at least two weeks of lesson plans with their mentor before the start of the school year.
Mentors will help Fellows set goals before the start of the year and at the semester break.
Mentors will provide support in all four aspects of formation: human, intellectual, spiritual, and pedagogical.
The mentor will work in close collaboration with the school principal as well in order to ensure that the Fellow is meeting all the standards and expectations of the school. The mentor will correspond directly with the Executive Director should there be any need for intervention.

Key Responsibilities:
Observation and Feedback: Observe mentees at least once a week for the first month and a half of school, then transition to monthly observations. Have follow-up conversations after each observation.
Lesson Plan Review:?Review lesson plans from their mentees and ensure these lesson plans stay up to date and meet standards.
Support and Guidance:?Be available to aid in other school-related situations where the Fellow may require advice before proceeding (e.g., parent conversations and student situations).
Goal Setting:?Help Fellows set goals before the start of the year and at the semester break.
Holistic Formation:?Provide support in all four aspects of formation: human, intellectual, spiritual, and pedagogical.
Collaboration:?Work closely with the school principal to ensure the Fellow is meeting all standards and expectations. Correspond directly with the Executive Director if intervention is needed.
