    Job DescriptionDescriptionOverview Adult English Language and Literacy (AELL) is the direct service provider of ESOL and adult literacy instruction for the Library. They use professional teachers to offer free instruction to adult patrons in reading, writing, speaking and listening from a 0 to 8th grade level. Through formal classes in language and literacy, as well as elective offerings such as English conversation and citizenship preparation groups, AELL has taken on the charge to expand ESOL instruction in the Library. The Student Mentor works as part of the Intake team that welcomes, orients, assesses and formally registers new students into the program. They are responsible for accurate student information collection and data entry. The Student Mentor is also expected to provide administrative support and complete general office duties as assigned. Key Responsibilities Reporting to the St George Hub Manager and Intake Advisor, the Student Mentor will: Assists in entering statistical data for all ESOL/ABE classes Assists in tracking demographic information for information sessions Support a variety of behind-the-scenes tasks, from basic tasks like cutting paper to more involved tasks such as setting up calendars, and producing documents Provides overall support across all Libraries in the preparation of materials and event setup (computers, video equipment, room arrangement, etc.) for information sessions Assist in the student intake across the Library, greeting new students, and helping direct them through the registration process by signing them in, seating them for the program, acting as translators (if bi-lingual), and making them feel comfortable within a library setting.     SCOPE South Bronx United (SBU) is seeking energetic individuals with a passion for youth development and soccer to join our team of SBU Coach-Mentors. In the position, the individual will serve as a mentor and Head Soccer Coach for a travel team of boys or girls within the SBU Academy Program. As a mentor, the individual serves as the first point of contact for any issues regarding SBU student athletes on the team and as a positive influence promoting education, character, and community. As a coach, the individual will run twice-weekly soccer trainings and coach the team at weekend games. The coach will have the goal of keeping youth active, instilling fun, and helping youth grow as both players and students. This is a part time position from September to June requiring approximately 8-12 hours/week during the fall and spring seasons. Hours will decrease during the winter off-season (January-February) to 4-6 hours/week. RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Serve as a Mentor for a team of approximately 20 youth (mentees): ● Serve as first point of staff level contact for the mentees. ● Help plan, set, and keep students on their program schedule. ● Maintain weekly contact with each mentee in person and via phone. ● Maintain regular contact with mentees' parent/guardian. ● Help SBU Education Director monitor student academic performance and assist in the collection of student report cards, transcripts, and school documents. ● Work with SBU Youth Counselor and Education Director to identify social, emotional, and academic issues or concerns. ● Check email daily and maintain good communication with SBU office staff ● Hold a weekly call with SBU office staff to discuss progress of each student-athlete on the team. ● Schedule one monthly in person meeting with program directors. ● Complete progress reports for each mentee two times per year. ● Attend program orientation/training (2 trainings per year) 2. Serve as Head Coach a travel youth soccer team ● Plan and lead training sessions at least two times per week during the season and at least one time per week during the winter. ● Coach and manage team at games. ● Coordinate team travel and traveling with students to games and events. ● Track attendance data from soccer and academic sessions. ● Attend coach training sessions and coach meetings ● Communicate effectively with youth regarding soccer and academic events. ● Enforce attendance and program policies on the soccer field. ● Work collaboratively with an assistant coach where applicable. ● Coordinate with the Director of Soccer Programs on all soccer matters SCHEDULE Coach-Mentors must be able to commit to coaching for at least one program year, September - June. Approximately 8-12 hours per week during the fall/spring season, and fewer hours through the winter. The precise schedule will be known ahead of each season. Educate students and enforce policies related to drug and alcohol use, as well as Ithaca community standards. Prepare residence hall for student arrival and complete check-in assignments as required. Be on overnight on-call status as assigned. Work closely with a pre-assigned group of pre-first year students monitoring their academic, social, professional and personal development, as well as their acclimation to the program and to IC. Peer Mentors will: Serve as a positive role model using appropriate language, exemplifying a positive attitude and modeling behavior expected from students. Hold one-on-ones with each student and complete contact sheets. Educate students regarding behaviors that will result in a positive academic experience at IC i.e. being on time for class; developing study hours; class participation, timely submission of assignments, developing relationships with IC faculty/staff, finding a mentor, etc. Communicate regularly and disseminate appropriate information to students about SB events and activities. Attend all SB sessions as assigned. Work with SB supervising staff on a regular basis. Peer Mentors will: Be responsible for the safety and security of office keys. Keys are not to be shared with non-OAOA staff. Communicate student progress, concerns and issues that arise with the SB staff. Assist in the preparation and cleanup of SB events.
