The mentor is a role unique to VTCS as they are private citizen volunteers matched with defendants based on their branch, era, rank, and combat exposure. This commonality is what provides the foundation for trust and support between a mentor and a mentee. Mentors are critical to the success of this program; unless we have a mentor for each participant we cannot accept new participants in the program. Requirements: Be an honorably discharged veteran of one of the branches of the United States Military (including guard and reserve branches). Complete mentor training and any additional training as requested by the Court. Maintain confidentiality regarding a defendant's case and personal information. Duties: Attend court sessions when scheduled. Participate in and lead mentoring sessions with veterans when assigned by the Judge. Be supportive and understanding of the difficulties veterans face. Assist the veterans as much as possible to resolve their concerns within the court procedures as well as interactions with the Veteran's Administration system.
