Your role
This individual will to contribute to the design and development of our next generation functional measurement guidewires and/or intravascular ultrasound catheters. This includes prototyping and testing of product concepts and fixtures, as well as development of clinically relevant test methods. You will have the opportunity to partner with a cross-functional team while learning about the full product development lifecycle, design controls, and risk management. Including:
* Concept generation, modeling, and prototyping
* Bench top test set-up and execution
* Statistical data analysis
* Writing and executing test protocols and reports
You're the right fit if
* B.S. Science / M.S. Science in Engineering in progress (e.g Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering)
* Proficient in using SolidWorks
* Experience with 3D modeling, fixture design, and basic machining
* Experience with bench-top testing
* Experience with statistics (e.g. Design of Experiments, Gauge R&R, Capability Analysis)
* Familiarity with intravascular clinical workflows preferred
* Experience with Minitab, a plus

Philips Transparency Details
The hourly pay range for this position is $28.00 to $32.00, plus overtime eligible. The actual base pay offered may vary depending on multiple factors including, job-related knowledge/skills, experience, business needs, geographical location, and internal equity.

Department Summary
Pathology Lab Research and Early Development (PL-RED) specializes in cancer diagnostics research and early development of new technologies for the pathology field. We are responsible for feeding the product development pipeline for the clinical pathology laboratory customer area and for new tissue diagnostics in medicine. PL-RED is a cross-disciplinary department that relies on contributions from a variety of fields including biology, chemistry, physics, robotics and computer science and artificial intelligence.
This internship position is located in Tucson, on-site.
The Opportunity
As a member of the Pathology Assay Team, you will use your general knowledge of biology, immunohistochemistry, computer science and image analysis to aid in developing a practical approach to semi-quantitative image analysis of stained tissues for use in developing new reagent formulations and procedures. These new reagent formulations will enable our tissue diagnostics with improved capabilities, and enable greater environmental sustainability. This is a 'hands on' laboratory bench work position embedded with a team of experienced scientists who will help you to be part of the team and help to advise your project.
The role involves integrating into an Agile team environment where you will be mentored in pathology assay technology R&D while completing a defined project. You will also be introduced to our Agile approach to scientific teamwork. You will contribute directly to our real-world effort to provide diagnostic certainty for life-changing decisions that our patients face.

Overview:
AstraZeneca's Internship Program offers undergraduate students a 10-12-week summer experience in our Research & Development laboratories. Interns contribute to real projects, develop technical skills, and learn our ways of working across discovery and translational science.

Possible Scope of Work:
Execute experiments: Perform cell culture, aseptic technique, ELISA/ligand binding assays, qPCR, Western blotting, flow cytometry, and high-content imaging under supervision. Experiments can involve the below:
Support molecular biology: Conduct DNA/RNA extraction, cloning, transfection, CRISPR-based gene editing, and expression analysis aligned to project needs.
Assist protein/analytical work: Contribute to protein purification, HPLC/UPLC, mass spectrometry sample prep, and stability assessments where applicable.
Capture and analyze data: Maintain accurate electronic lab notebooks, follow SOPs, apply appropriate statistics, and present findings in team meetings.
Follow safety and quality procedures: Adhere to EHS and biosafety requirements; support lab maintenance and reagent inventory.
Possible Teams You'll Work with:
Oncology R&D: Target validation and antibody-drug conjugate workflows from hit finding to biomarker assay development.
BioPharmaceuticals R&D:
Cardiovascular, Renal, & Metabolism; Respiratory & Immunology: In vitro and ex vivo models to evaluate pharmacology and disease biology; biomarker and functional assays.
Vaccines & Immune Therapies: Cellular immunoassays, cytokine profiling, flow cytometry, and formulation characterization.
Biologics Engineering & Biopharmaceutical Development: Molecular cloning, expression and purification, biophysical characterization, and developability assessments.
Translational Science: Assay development/qualification, sample handling workflows, and data packages informing early clinical studies.
Minimum Qualifications:
Work authorization: Immediately authorized to work in the U.S. This role will not provide CPT support.
Enrollment and Graduation Date: Undergraduate student enrolled full-time at an accredited U.S. college/university at the time of application. Must have a graduation date after August 2026.

This project is centered on improving laboratory workflow efficiency through automation. The intern will be responsible for designing and developing a prototype robotic or automated solution for precision handling and movement of critical diagnostic components (such as slides, tubes, or cartridges) used in our instruments. Mechanical design, component selection and hands-on prototyping: Modify the existing mechanical components of a small-scale automation system & procure prototype parts.

Main Responsibilities:
* Contribute to the design and analysis of both early- and late-phase clinical trials by applying advanced statistical methods and data analysis techniques.
* Support the development, evaluation, and implementation of innovative statistical methodologies to address complex problems in clinical research.
* Work collaboratively under the guidance and mentorship of senior-level statisticians, gaining hands-on experience in study planning, data interpretation, and the preparation of statistical reports and publications.
About You
Basic Qualifications:
* Currently enrolled and pursuing PhD in Statistics or Biostatistics at an accredited college or university
* Candidates must have completed at least two years of graduate coursework and be working on a dissertation toward a PhD in Statistics or Biostatistics
* Experience with SAS and R
* Must be able to relocate to the office location and work 40hrs/week, Monday-Friday, for the full duration of the co-op/internship
* Must be permanently authorized to work in the U.S. and not require sponsorship of an employment visa (e.g., H-1B or green card) at the time of application or in the future. Students currently on CPT, OPT, or STEM OPT usually require future sponsorship for long term employment and do not meet the requirements for this program unless eligible for an alternative long-term status that does not require company sponsorship

* Effective oral and written communication skills
* Experience with python is a plus
