Mercury Media company history timeline

1991

Mercury's sister company, Mercury Personal Communications, was awarded a PCN license by the government in July 1991.

1992

In November of 1992, Cable & Wireless sold a 20 percent share in the enterprise to the Canadian company BCEbc, the parent company of Bell Canada, for about £480 million.

In 1992, after only a short tenure, however, van Cuylenburg left Mercury and was replaced by Mike Harris, a former head of First Direct Bank.

1993

At the end of January, 1993, Mercury had supplied over 117,000 telephone lines to cable operators.

2016

He returned to Richmond in 2016 to cover energy, environment and transportation for the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

2018

The Mercury launched in 2018 to bring a fresh perspective to coverage of the state’s biggest political and policy issues and fill the gaps in statehouse reporting created by a shrinking media industry.

Robert spent 13 years as a reporter and editor at weekly and daily newspapers before becoming editor of the Virginia Mercury in 2018.

2019

Before joining the Mercury in 2019, he spent six years at the Richmond Times-Dispatch, most of that time covering the governor's office, the General Assembly and state politics.
