The Mariemont hospital, which had originally opened in 1942, continued operations for a number of years after the Anderson facility opened.
By 1947, Atlas was doing business in fifty-three countries and was the largest manufacturer of stainless and specialty steel in the British Commonwealth.
By 1949, there was a drop in sales for Atlas products and the company was forced to diversify in order to survive.
In 1952 Atlas expanded and the plant included a cold rolling mill.
By 1953 Atlas was Canada’s sole provider of stainless steel sheets and bars.
The following year they diversified again to include a stainless strip and tube mill and in 1956 Atlas Titanium Limited was created to manufacture titanium.
In 1958, Atlas Steels sold its headquarters on East Main Street for $80,000 to the City of Welland.
In July of 1961, Atlas purchased Alloy Metal Sales Limited from International Nickel Company of Canada.
Construction of the Anderson hospital began in 1982.
Atlas Tube was founded in Harrow, Ontario, in 1984 by the late Harry Zekelman.
When Our Lady of Mercy Hospital Anderson opened in 1984, it originally had 96 beds.
The Welland factory was renamed Atlas Specialty Steels in 1985.
The Sammi Group of South Korea purchased the Atlas facilities in 1989.
Although the Mariemont facility ceased operating as a hospital in 1989, it serves as a a senior living facility.
A Mercy HealthPlex was built across the street from the main facility in July 1998.
On August 1, 2000 the assets of Atlas Steels Inc., including the Welland and Tracy facilities were sold to Slater Steel.
Atlas Specialty Steels maintained its position in the market and continued to be profitable through 2001 helping Slater achieve its goal of debt retirement.
In June, 2003 it was required to liquidate the Welland plant as well as other holdings.
A deal to sell the Atlas Specialty Steels facility to Centre Steel Holdings Ltd. was expected to close by the end of April, 2004.
In April of 2006 MMFX, a technology company with a unique patent for high strength, corrosion resistant rebar, acquired the Welland Facility with a view towards sourcing its proprietary steel billet internally at lower costs.
On August 27th, 2010 ASW Steel Inc. emerged as a new entity possessing virtually all of the assets previously held by MMFX Steel of Canada.
Over the next six years, ASW grew its business exponentially such that by 2016 production levels approached 90,000 tons.
