In 1937, the Sisters of Mercy of Valley City took over the Hospital and named it Mercy Hospital.
Records show that the first baby was born in 1938.
The initial building was later acquired by the Good Samaritan Society as a charity house and was sold to the Lutheran Hospital and Homes Society in 1938.
On September 22, 1950, the first Franciscan Sisters took over the operation of the hospital and named it St Joseph’s Hospital, with Sister Mary Agnes as the first Administrator.
In 1954 a fund drive was started.
On March 1, 1955, at a total cost of $750,000, Sheyenne Care Center for the Chronically Ill opened its doors for service.
The Sheyenne Care Center Manor for senior citizens had its official beginning in 1959 when a group of concerned citizens gathered to discuss the area’s urgent need for an adequate home for the senior citizens.
The Sheyenne Care Center Manor opened its 80-bed facility on December 14th, 1962.
In July of 1969 Sheyenne Care Center Hospital and Mercy Hospital entered into an agreement identifying that the Sheyenne Care Center Hospital would provide skilled nursing care and that Mercy Hospital would provide the acute and rehabilitation care.
In January of 1972, the facility received a grant to remodel, which resulted in the addition of 18 beds and the addition of a new South wings.
The Sisters who had occupied the second floor of the hospital moved to other accommodations in 1977 and that area was used for medical records, in-service and conference room, and offices.
In 1981, Oakes Community Hospital celebrated 25 years of dedicated service to the sick and injured.
A landmark year was 1983 when the skilled and intermediate care facility united and changed the name to Sheyenne Care Center.
Sheyenne Care Center in 1988 started the construction of the old hospital with the addition to the old hospital by adding two multi-level wings.
Dedication of a wing housing the Clinical Laboratory, CT scanner, Emergency Rooms, Out-patient services and Lobby took place May 1, 1994.
On September 21, 1995 Oakes Community Hospital was notified that the hospital was certified as a Trauma Level IV hospital.
In 1996, Oakes Community Hospital celebrated 40 years of dedicated service to the sick and injured.
In July 1999, Southeast Medical Center separated from the Hospital.
On April 18th, 2002 Sheyenne Care Center, along with 5 other nursing homes in North Dakota owned and operated by Banner Health System, became a part of Sisters of Mary of the Presentation Health.
PACs (a system that allows for images to be transmitted digitally for evaluation and diagnosis) and Telepharmacy began in 2007 after the move into the new hospital.
In September of 2011, Doctor Katie O’Brien-Paradis joined the medical staff and currently serves as Chief of Staff.
In 2015, Sheyenne Care Center started a major construction and remodeling project on what was known as the Sheyenne Care Center Manor.
