Mercy Housing company history timeline

1981

Sister Mary Terese Tracy, at the time a hospital administrator, was drafted to lead this new initiative, and on Christmas Eve, 1981, Mercy Housing, Inc. was incorporated as a Nebraska nonprofit corporation.

1983

Since 1983, Mercy has grown tremendously.

In 1983, the Sisters of Mercy made an investment in a building and some otherwise homeless and hungry people.

In 1983, Mercy Housing expanded the scope of its services and created the Mercy Housing Management Group (MHMG), a subsidiary that provides property management services for Mercy Housing’s affordable housing communities.

1995

In 1995 a survey was conducted of residents at Ladnier Homes Public Housing, Gulfport.

Amid the excitement of the building’s dedication, long-time Mercy Housing supporters celebrated the agency’s achievement of the same dream low-income families had shared in 1995.

1997

The first two low-income families became homeowners in 1997, and MHHD established its Home Buyer Club to encourage members to become home owners.

1998

By 1998, the Home Buyer Club had 23 members.

2009

Always responsive to emerging need, in 2009, in the wake of the national foreclosure crisis, Mercy Housing created Mercy Portfolio Services, designed to stabilize neighborhoods and preserve affordable, low-income housing in especially hard hit areas of Chicago.

2010

In 2010 MHHD bought its own building at 1135 Ford Street.

2014

Jane Graf, formerly Mercy Housing’s President, became CEO in June, 2014.

2020

Following Graf’s retirement in 2020, Ismael Guerrero was appointed President and CEO.
