The Impact You'll Have:

Tasks You'll Assist With:

Qualifications:

You will work closely with the Government Entity Team writing motions for cases that involve internal affairs investigations, law enforcement defense, and municipal liability cases. Draft pretrial motions and oppositions, including pleading-related motions, discovery motions, and dispositive motions.
Draft trial motions and assist with preparing trial documents, including motions in limine, trial briefs, pocket briefs, and jury instructions and verdicts.
Drafting post-trial motions, including motions for new trial and motions for attorney's fees.
Opportunity to handle appellate cases and conduct appellate arguments, including learning from the firm's experienced appellate practitioners.
Conduct legal research and provide recommendations to clients and litigation attorneys on complex legal issues.

Additional Geographic Pay:
Officers who work in the five boroughs of New York City or in Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, or Westchester counties will receive an additional $1,763 annual downstate adjustment.
In addition to the downstate adjustment, Police who work in the following locations will receive an additional supplemental local pay in the following amounts: the counties of Orange, Putnam, and Dutchess counties - $1,468; the five boroughs of New York City, Rockland, and Westchester counties - $2,204; and Nassau and Suffolk counties - $2,570.
Officers who work in the Mid-Hudson region (Dutchess, Orange, Rockland, and Westchester counties) or Downstate region (Bronx, Kings, New York, Queens, Richmond, Nassau, or Suffolk counties) are eligible for an additional $15,000 in geographic pay differentials.
Work Location:
After completing a six-month residential police academy located in Rensselaerville, NY, Park Police Officer Trainees will be assigned to a Park Police zone, which may be anywhere in New York State, upon graduation. Then trainees will complete field training at their assigned zone (county) for the remaining 6 months of their probationary period before advancing to Park Police Officer, Grade 14.

The ACLU seeks Legal Interns for Summer term 2025 in the Criminal Law Reform Project (CLRP) in the Legal Department of the ACLU's National office in New York, NY.
The Team:
CLRP seeks to end policies that fuel mass incarceration and over-criminalization. To these ends, CLRP focuses primarily on advocating for reform in policing, pretrial practices, public defense, sentencing, and supervision systems. We fulfill our mission through strategic litigation and advocacy that promotes meaningful change. Key priorities are ending unjust pretrial detention, along with exploitative and oppressive conditions of release; eliminating unconstitutional and racially biased police practices; and catalyzing robust public defense systems. CLRP works closely with the ACLU's National Political Advocacy Department and partners across the country to build a movement for social change, promote racial justice, and win reforms needed to significantly cut the size of our nation's incarcerated population.
The Project's current priorities are combatting police violence while bolstering individual rights against police authority; protecting the fundamental right to pretrial liberty; eliminating excessive conditions of post release supervision; and creating robust public defense systems to guarantee the constitutional right counsel. CLRP works closely with the ACLU's National Political Advocacy Department, our communications Department, and our affiliates to advance an affirmative vision for criminal legal system reform.

The intern will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience by working alongside the team and assisting in factual investigation, and legal research and writing to advance our litigation and integrated advocacy.
