Mesabi Tribune company history timeline

1893

The Hibbing News also dates from that time. It was first published in 1893, the same year Hibbing was founded.

1900

By 1900, the official census of the village (the founders of Hibbing had chosen the “village” and not the “city” form of government) showed about 2,500 people.

1905

Here, in 1905, on the left is John Hayden and on the right is Frank Evens.

1955

The company eventually built hundreds more houses after the mine began operations in October 1955.

1964

Krueger started work as a mining engineer at Reserve in June 1964.

1975

The following article was written by Al Zdon who came to Hibbing in 1975 as the Range Editor for the Hibbing Daily Tribune.

1985

Larry Selzer, president and CEO of The Conservation Fund, based in Arlington, Virginia, told the crowd the nonprofit is committed to a nationwide effort of seeing that “forests remain forests.” Since 1985, it has protected over 8 million acres of America’s most important, at-risk lands and waters.

1986

The building, constructed heavily with steel, had been transformed into a hotel after Reserve Mining closed in 1986, its demise largely due to its inability to compete with imported steel.

1994

He soon became Managing Editor of the newspaper, a position he held until moving back to the Twin Cities in 1994.

1995

When Rouse and her husband, Mike Rouse, bought the nearly 7,000-square-foot structure in 1995, it had already been converted into a small hotel, then named the Alder Inn.

2020

However, in 2020, The Conservation Fund bought $72,000 from PotlatchDeltic for $48 million, including 28,089 acres at Nett Lake and Deer Creek, with the intent of returning reservation lands to tribal nations.
