Messiah College company history timeline

1909

The school was founded as Messiah Bible School and Missionary Training Home in 1909 by the Brethren in Christ Church.

1911

The very first academic dean at Messiah Bible School (now known as Messiah University), Asa Climenhaga, taught the first art classes in 1911.

1921

By 1921, it had also become a junior college, making it the second junior college in Pennsylvania, and changed its name to Messiah Bible School.

1963

Following accreditation in 1963, the College significantly increased the number of majors offered in the liberal arts and introduced undergraduate programs in professional studies.

By the 1950s, the school offered four-year college programs and accordingly in 1951 it changed its name to Messiah College. It was accredited as a four-year college in 1963, and continued to expand its liberal arts programs.

1968

In 1968, Messiah College opened its Philadelphia Campus in a unique partnership with Temple University.

1970

The first ever J-Term session was introduced to students in January 1970.

1971

Messiah College played a leading role in the founding of the Christian College Consortium in 1971, and later, the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities.

1981

The Climenhaga Fine Arts Center opened in 1981, two years before Asa Climenhaga’s death, and began displaying art exhibitions in the new gallery space which was named for its donor, M. Louise Aughinbaugh.

1983

In 1983, the College became the senior educational partner with Daystar Institute (now Daystar University) in Nairobi, Kenya.

1986

18, 1986 as the inaugural speaker for the Religion and Society Lecture Series.

1995

In 1995, Messiah competed for the first time with its solar car, Genesis, in Sunrayce, a national competition of solar-powered vehicles.

1997

Joy Yu-Ho Wang became Messiah College's first Rhodes Scholar in 1997.

2002

In 2002, Messiah College's Harrisburg Institute was founded in downtown Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

2004

In December 2004, the College celebrated the appointment of its eighth president, Kim S. Phipps.

2009

In 2009, Messiah College launched its first graduate programs, and currently offers online master's programs in art education, conducting, counseling, education, higher education and youth and young adult ministries.

2010

In 2010, Messiah College was ranked 7th among all undergraduate institutions in the country that send students to study abroad by the Institute for International Education's Open Doors Report.

2013

In addition to the Aughinbaugh Gallery in the Climenhaga building, Messiah has multiple designated areas throughout the top and bottom levels of the Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing Arts, which opened in 2013.

2020

The Messiah College Board of Trustees announced that it approved Messiah College moving to university status, effective July 1, 2020.

Messiah officially becomes Messiah University on July 1, 2020, and adds its first online undergraduate adult degree programs to its curriculum--expanding its educational mission to another emerging student population.
