    Remote Metabase job

Metabase is the easiest way for people to get insights from their data, from tiny startups who get up and running quickly to major corporations with tens of thousands of users. That's why people love us. We bring data tools with the elegance and simplicity of consumer products to the crufty world of enterprise business intelligence. We provide an opinionated open source starting point for how companies should measure, analyze and share their data, which is used by tens of thousands of companies. Metabase's BizOps & Finance team is a small, high-leverage group that builds the systems keeping the company running smoothly behind the scenes. We cover a wide range of areas - finance and accounting, sales operations, legal operations, compliance, and account management - but we treat them all as flavors of operations. Whatever the task, we take a systems-driven approach - design it, build it, and run it (ideally, automatically). Our goal is to free the rest of the company to focus on building great software. We're looking for a high-powered generalist with strong quantitative skills who likes working across a wide range of business areas. You'll design, build, and operate scalable systems while partnering with internal and external experts to solve ambiguous problems. This is a hands-on role for someone who's comfortable moving between big-picture strategy and detailed execution - someone who enjoys turning ideas into working systems. This particular role will focus on our financial operations - managing the month-end close with external accountants, supporting tax and audit processes, and improving the systems that keep our books and billing accurate. You don't need to come from a traditional finance background - we care more about your ability to learn quickly, solve problems systematically, and keep complex operations running smoothly. You'll have meaningful exposure to the financial management of a growing company and plenty of opportunities to design better, smarter ways of doing things as we scale.Responsibilities Own and operate the day-to-day processes that keep our financial operations running smoothly Manage the month-end close process, and manage our external accountants Lead annual financial audits and coordinate deliverables with our auditors Prepare data and track progress for tax filings across multiple jurisdictions Maintain financial data hygiene Own our payments and expense management systems Lead cross-functional projects to solve operational problems as they arise Identify opportunities to streamline or automate recurring workflows Jump in to help with other operational areas when needed - we're a small team, and we all pitch in About you You're a high-performing generalist who enjoys tackling complex, ambiguous business problems across different domains You move comfortably between high-level design and detailed execution - connecting strategy to the details and building processes that scale You have rock-solid quantitative skills and are fluent in spreadsheets You're organized, able to manage multiple projects in parallel, and take satisfaction in getting things done You collaborate effectively with internal stakeholders and external experts (lawyers, accountants, vendors) You have a strong quantitative undergraduate degree (math, physics, engineering, computer science, economics, or finance) You have a track record of achievement and a bias for action You bring a low-ego attitude - no job is too small or too large You have some exposure to accounting concepts, either through education or work experience Nice-to-have (for more experienced candidates): experience owning complex projects end-to-end and working in fast-paced, unstructured environments (e.g. startups, consulting, PE/VC) Nice-to-have (for more experienced candidates): a top-tier MBA Nice to have: working knowledge of SQL We're hiring for this role across a range of experience levels. Title and scope (Associate vs. Manager) will depend on your background and experience. If there's anything more you'd like to tell us about you or your interests, use the "additional information" section on the application page. We are real humans looking at applications and we love to hear what you have to say! We're a global team (50% outside the US), fully distributed (from Thailand to California), who get things done asynchronously, with plenty of uninterrupted time, supporting each other to do the best work of our careers. We offer flexibility (define your own schedule and work from wherever you want), autonomy, and an environment that fosters growth, learning, and development. We're relentlessly user-focused and believe in building long-term value, not short-term hacks. And we raised a $30M Series B to take our approach to the next level for years to come. For U.S. applicants: Metabase participates in the federal E-Verify program, which confirms employment authorization of newly hired U.S. based employees. That's why people love us. We bring data tools with the elegance and simplicity of consumer products to the crufty world of enterprise business intelligence. We provide an opinionated open source starting point for how companies should measure, analyze and share their data, which is used by tens of thousands of companies. And there's so much more to do! We're expanding the product in many directions, and continuously reevaluating decisions we made in the past in order to improve every flow and detail. We want to do that faster and in more depth, so we're looking for outcome-oriented, seasoned Product Designers to join our core team. At Metabase, design directly drives business success: our customers consistently choose us because of our superior UX - meaning your work will be directly responsible for our growth. Each product designer is embedded within one of our core product teams, working hand-in-hand a product manager and a small team of engineers to create amazing design solutions for truly tricky technical problems. Our design culture is unique: We focus on solving root problems rather than applying superficial fixes We care more about a solution “feeling” right than rigidly adhering to “consistency” We ship iteratively and value real-world outcomes over “perfect” process or glossy internal artifacts Recent projects our designers have tackled include: Reimagining the experience for exploring and visualizing data Overhauling the UX for writing custom expressions Crafting customizable, embeddable components for our SDK Responsibilities Deliver end-to-end design solutions that are truly elegant, beautiful, fun, and simple. Keep complexity from creeping into the product, while giving users ever more power. Be a thought partner with your team's product manager to refine the problem definition, goals, and rough scope of projects. Iterate rapidly and broadly in scrappy ways that make abstract ideas tangible and which move conversations forward. Deeply internalize the needs and mindset of our users through insights provided by the broader team. UX research skills aren't needed, but welcome. Profile You think in terms of journeys, not screens. Biased toward building things, not slide decks. Thorough and attentive to detail, with a high internal bar for your craft. Exceptional ability to communicate design decisions and rationales through speaking and writing. Comfortable with asynchronous collaboration, and articulating complex ideas remotely. Skills and experience Strong intuitions and craft developed over 5+ years of product design experience. Your work will rely on research and analytics, but it will shine because of solid instincts and craftsmanship. Experience designing rich, deep web applications/tools Technical enough to understand at a high level what's happening inside the engineering black-boxes. (If you don't understand the complexity, how can you simplify it?) • Open Source Community Advocate

    Metabase 4.1company rating

    Remote Metabase job

Metabase is the easiest way for people to get insights from their data, from tiny startups who get up and running quickly to major corporations with tens of thousands of users. That's why people love us. We bring data tools with the elegance and simplicity of consumer products to the crufty world of enterprise business intelligence. We provide an opinionated open source starting point for how companies should measure, analyze and share their data, which is used by tens of thousands of companies. Metabase is looking for a customer-focused, technical Open Source Community Advocate to join our growing global team! We are looking for someone who loves data analytics, enjoys helping others, and is excited to work for a startup to help drive our Success Engineering team's mission to help our customers be successful by guiding them on how to get data from all the various places it lives, transform it into useful shapes, or to convert their questions into actual queries that can be executed. You will help and build relationships with our customers in the public places they hang out (like LinkedIn, Twitter, Reddit, and data slack communities), providing help to Metabase users using our open source and for-fee products. Our discourse forum is often the first resource that comes up when our customers search for issues, and it's used by Metabase customers big and small. A typical day will involve a mix of answering our users on our discourse forum and helping customers on Twitter or other social channels. Any given week, you might correspond with our users to hear what they're trying to accomplish, collaborate with our writing team, or participate in brainstorming sessions on what content we should create for our customers. Why Success? We are the voice for our customers. Our product team reviews our feedback, asks us for advice, and engages with our customers proactively. We have a writer on our team who reviews what questions our customers are asking and improves our documentation, so the next customer doesn't have to ask. We also work closely with an engineering team focused on critical issues and our escalations, so we don't have to worry about our customers being impacted by major bugs for a long time. We're 100% remote, and our operations are designed that way. People work during the times that work for them. You are not expected to be “on” at all times, and there are no points for responding quickly to every Slack you receive. We don't overpromise our customers. Since we're open source, our customers can see what we're doing in our Github repository and our roadmap is publicly available for our customers at all times. Many companies use the word “success” to describe jobs that are really sales jobs or account management jobs with quotas. We are not about that. We're exclusively here to make sure our open source users, our future customers who are currently on trials, and our current paying customers all get the appropriate help they need to be successful. If you want to take part and have a voice in a truly growing business, believe that BI analytics should be easy to use and set-up, and that self-service analytics should be a real thing and not just some marketing jargon that people put on their websites, please apply! Being an Open Source Community Advocate at Metabase would be a great fit for you if you: Enjoy helping people and solving their problems Have a strong technical background (minimum of 3 -5 years writing production code or administering systems) Have experience with using data visualization or data analytics tools (bonus if you have experience using Metabase) Have excellent written communication Are comfortable being the face of Metabase during webinars or in-person events You have expertise in at least one of: Running Metabase on a variety of operating systems for multiple years Strong background in networking and how web applications function Managing servers (either physical, or Docker, or AWS/GCP/etc) Managing databases and strong SQL skills It's not required, but a plus if you: Are fluent in multiple languages (this is helpful as our users are world-wide) If there's anything more you'd like to tell us about you or your interests, use the "additional information" section on the application page. We are real humans looking at applications and we love to hear what you have to say! • Software Engineer (Frontend)

We built Metabase because existing tools for business intelligence didn't feel like things we wanted to use. We wanted faster, simpler ways to ask questions about data, and wanted to strip away the colder feel of most Enterprise software. Folks seemed to agree, and now Metabase is used daily by tens of thousands of companies to give people in all sorts of roles access to insights they wouldn't have otherwise had. None of this could happen without our user interface and that's where you come in. We're looking for someone with strong product sensibilities, extraordinarily good frontend skills, and solid software engineering fundamentals to join our team to advance the state of the art in our product and our industry. We are hiring for multiple frontend software engineer positions. Why choose Metabase The problems we face are genuinely interesting and aren't trivial. Data influences so much of our world but isn't that easy to interact with or understand. You'll make tools that people rely on for their real jobs. You'll get to work in open source and get feedback directly from users and customers out in the open. The company is growing and so is the business. We're adding new remote team members from around the world and improving our processes. It's an exciting time and you can really have an impact on how things work here. We've tried to design our work environment to fit into real life. Work is only one part of who you are, so we emphasize reasonable workdays and prefer planning and avoiding panic. People at Metabase have families, dogs, plants, and lives outside of work and we try to support that however we can. What we're looking for You care about crafting delightful user experiences. You like to write code to enable people to do something and you understand that details and things like copy matter. If your focus is only on code this might not be the best role for you. Prior experience shipping non-trivial apps using React + Redux (or equivalent). Our front end is written in React (surprise!), so you'll need really strong React and JavaScript knowledge to build fast and thoughtful user interfaces. You have experience writing tests, giving good feedback on other people's code, and writing proposals for more complicated problems that are thoughtful and clear. As we're a remote company (even outside of pandemics) communication and clarity are really important. Due to the nature of what we work on, computer science-y problems come up frequently. We're not picky about a specific degree or accolade, but you'll be expected to write fast and performant code and deal with a fair bit of data structure manipulation regularly. We like everyone to care about the nuts and bolts of how to make things look good, so you'll be expected to use our style guide and if necessary write or update our CSS, so comfort in CSS and familiarity with things like design systems and component libraries is a necessity. You've worked on a large and complex JavaScript project. Metabase is a big product and code base so the ability to adapt existing code and integrate new code into established systems is important and you should feel comfortable digging in. Not essential, but nice to have Knowledge and prior experience with data visualization (especially if it has involved dc.js and d3.js). Previous contributions to open source (not a requirement, but a huge plus). Either pre-existing knowledge or interest in learning some Clojure, the language much of the backend of our application is written in. The types of problems you'd get to work on Lightning fast interaction with data. Think things like letting people see all the orders that came in from a specific region by clicking directly on a custom map of their sales regions and then letting them filter that list visually by directly interacting with the data table - and all of this happening in a responsive and delightful way. Augmenting visualizations. To allow for people to further institutional knowledge, build the feature to allow annotations directly on specific data points in a line chart, and then determine how to expose those when it makes sense across dashboards and the entire app. Wayfinding. We want to make sure people don't have to do work that's already been done, so build new ways to surface important metrics or segments to the right users across Metabase. Embedded analytics. We have customers who deliver analytics to their own users via our embed product. You'd get to tackle the problem of making sure those can match their own products visually and enable easier integration of the embeds into their own code. • Product Manager

Our business is thriving and expanding our product in both depth and breadth, and looking for quite technical, UX-appreciative, craftsmanship-aligned Product Managers to join the team. PMing at Metabase can be different than elsewhere, as we prioritize product craftsmanship and deep understanding of problems over moving metrics at all costs. It rewards intellectual curiosity, customer empathy and systematic thinking and doesn't emphasize strict metric optimization or a ship-ship-ship attitude. We ship, but we do it well. Even if you don't meet 100% of the qualifications below, please still consider applying. We believe in a holistic approach when evaluating talent for our team.Responsibilities Develop deep knowledge and empathy for users needs in the areas they tackle. This involves reviewing existing issues, tickets, docs, engaging in lots of interviews and evaluating quantitative data. Understand the underlying mechanics of the product at a technical level. You don't need to read/write code, but need to have the curiosity and ability to over time understand how things work and develop instincts for what's easy/hard. Develop strategies for solving clusters of users needs in thoughtful ways, ultimately delivering product docs which frame needs in actionable ways for designers and engineers. This is really important. Steward projects forward, helping keep focus, momentum, and continuously re-evaluating scope, with flexibility and appreciation for technical constraints and UX considerations. Follow-up on the outcomes of projects you ship, quantitatively and qualitatively. Collaborate with the rest of the team, consistently seeking and providing feedback, as well as pitching ideas for how to advance the product. Responsibilities don't include : managing people, herding cats, writing code, making mocks. About you A thorough thinker, able to be both diligent with details but systematic to see the big picture. Appreciative of clean but powerful user experiences (and the hard work they require). Able to keep a vision in mind, but break the path to it into small, doable, valuable steps. Bearer of strong product sense and good taste. Yes, I said it: good taste. To make a product users can love, it has to be lovable in the first place, and that requires knowing what not only solves a problem but is pleasant to use. Excited to work asynchronously in a global team, and with the written communication chops to do it effectively. More interested in the Product than the Management part of Product Management. While our team is globally distributed, this role involves enough synchronous interactions with team members in the US West Coast. So don't accept applicants farther East than UTC+3. This restriction doesn't necessarily apply to other roles at Metabase, but is non-negotiable for PMs. Skills and experience Must have enough of a technical background. Preference is from data analysis, data engineering, or software engineering with experience with databases. PMing these things for a long while can also work. We're not set up to have people learn the basics of data stacks on the job and screen for it early in the process. At least 4 years of experience in a product management role, making software in-house, having been through a few cycles of discovery, execution and iteration. We're not yet set up to simultaneously train a junior PM and onboard them to the complexities of Metabase. In terms of responsibilities and the level of autonomy we expect from our PMs, this is a mid-to-senior PM role, and IC PMs on our team previously held GPM, Director and VP titles. Depending on the role you're for which you're a good match, experience working on a platform team and thinking through APIs may be needed, but we'll get there later. Driven and able to help others continuously deliver work through influence, not authority. Skills you don't need: up-to-date coding skills, customer management, horse whispering. Read more about the interview process for this role here. If there's anything more you'd like to tell us about you or your interests, use the "additional information" section on the application page. We are real humans looking at applications and we love to hear what you have to say!
