Methodist Hospital Of Henderson, Kentucky history

On August 16, 1948, the Hospital and approximately 21 acres of property were purchased by The Methodist Health in Henderson, Inc.

In August 1954 the site at 6500 Excelsior Blvd. was purchased from Salkin & Linoff, a local drygoods firm, for $70,000.

The existing facility was sold to Los Angeles County, and in 1957, Methodist Hospital reopened on a 22-acre campus in the Arcadia civic center, where a new $3 million, 138-bed facility had been constructed.

Now called Methodist Hospital, the Open House was held from January 20-31, 1959, and over 10,000 people toured the facility before it opened for business.

Methodist Episcopal Hospital officially changed its name to Methodist Hospital in 1961.

Many additions have been added since then, starting in 1962.

By 1963, it became apparent the one-story facility would not meet the needs of the community and planning was initiated for development of a modern multi-story acute care facility.

Doctor Peter Herbut, who served as Chairman of Pathology at both Jefferson and Methodist, was named President of Jefferson in 1965.

A west wing opened in 1967, increasing capacity to 284 beds.

The hospital moved to its current location in 1968 upon completion of a nine-story tower near the intersection of 84th Street and West Dodge Road.

When he died, far too young, in 1973, the institution had four sprawling wings and was just as he had envisioned it.

The School of Nursing graduated its first male students in 1979, breaking the gender barrier in a female dominated profession.

In 1988, the relationship with Thomas Jefferson University Hospital was further strengthened through a preferred affiliation agreement.

A 55,500-square-foot addition to the south of the hospital opened to house Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center (MECC) and its outpatient surgery center (1991).

1996, A division of Thomas Jefferson University

Methodist Hospital cut the ribbon on a new three-story ambulatory care center (Methodist HealthWest) at 162nd Street and West Dodge Road (2000).

A 20,400-square-feet addition at MECC was made to accommodate two new linear accelerators (2004).

MECC expanded again to create physician offices and space for support services for cancer patients (2006).

In September 2011, the hospital opened the North Tower with 120 medical surgical beds, 20 CCU beds, and an expanded emergency department with 28 beds and an additional 18-bed observation unit.

In 2016, the hospital celebrated its 125th anniversary of caring for the community.

The Methodist Community Health Clinic, which provides full-range medical services to those in need, opened (2017).
