Harrison Steve MD company history timeline

1943

Methodist Medical Center first opened as an Army hospital in 1943 when Oak Ridge was still America’s “Secret City.” Now 75 years later, the hospital is an Advanced Primary Stroke Center and provides more than 30 medical specialties ranging from cardiology and orthopedics to oncology and wound care.

1953

If you think about it myoglobin was getting solved at that time; isomorphous replacement on hemoglobin is 1953, and Kendrew quickly adapted that to myoglobin.

The Glen Oak wing opens in 1953, bringing the hospital's capacity to over 300 beds.

1956

Certainly Don’s paper in 1956, which was the first precession photograph of a virus crystal, showed that bushy stunt was icosahedrally symmetric.

1957

The existing facility was sold to Los Angeles County, and in 1957, Methodist Hospital reopened on a 22-acre campus in the Arcadia civic center, where a new $3 million, 138-bed facility had been constructed.

1959

The modern, well-equipped Hamilton Wing follows in 1959.

1961

One of his first exposures to biology came in 1961 when a friend dragged him to a lecture by Francis Crick.

1962

He spent the summer of 1962 in the laboratory of Charlie Thomas at Johns Hopkins Medical School.

Steve's introduction to protein structure came in 1962 when Max Perutz was invited to Harvard Medical School to be the Dunham Lecturer.

1963

Steve's interest in structural virology began when he started graduate school in the Fall of 1963 and that's when the oral history begins.

1965

The quest began in 1965 when Steve was a graduate student in Don Caspar's lab at the Harvard Medical School.

1967

A west wing opened in 1967, increasing capacity to 284 beds.

1970

1971

In 1971, the Methodist Heart Care Center is the first to perform the new cardiac catheterization procedure.

1975

In 1975, the first open-heart surgery is performed at Methodist, marking the start of the area's longest-running open heart program.

1991

A 55,500-square-foot addition to the south of the hospital opened to house Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center (MECC) and its outpatient surgery center (1991).

2004

A 20,400-square-feet addition at MECC was made to accommodate two new linear accelerators (2004).

2006

MECC expanded again to create physician offices and space for support services for cancer patients (2006).

2010

A new outpatient facility, Methodist North at Allen Road, opened in 2010.

2011

In September 2011, the hospital opened the North Tower with 120 medical surgical beds, 20 CCU beds, and an expanded emergency department with 28 beds and an additional 18-bed observation unit.

The facility, named for legendary pathologist John R. “Rudy” Schenken and Jerald R. “Jerry” Schenken, is a center of excellence for pathology and serves a three-state area (2011).

1, 2011, Methodist became the eighth senior affiliate of UnityPoint Health, the nation's 5th largest nondenominational health system.

2013

In 2013, Proctor Hospital affiliated with Methodist, and the two organizations formed a unified health system: UnityPoint Health - Methodist | Proctor, a leader in health care in Central Illinois.

2016

In 2016, the hospital celebrated its 125th anniversary of caring for the community.

The project encompassed a new sterile processing department on the lower level, first-floor surgical suites and a surgery waiting area, and second-floor staff lounges and surgical department offices (2016).

2017

The Methodist Community Health Clinic, which provides full-range medical services to those in need, opened (2017).

In 2017, Pekin Hospital affiliated with UnityPoint Health Systems and became UnityPoint Health - Pekin.

2018

One of America’s Best Employers – Three Years in a Row Covenant Health is the only health system in East Tennessee on Becker’s list of “150 Top Places to Work in Healthcare” in 2018 and has been named three years in a row by Forbes as one of America’s Best Employers.

Opening in early 2018, the UnityPoint Clinic - Pekin East medical office building is located at 3591 Griffin Avenue in Pekin and houses pediatric, primary care and diagnostic services.

2021

Jefferson Health – New Jersey Hospitals Receive 2021 Quality and Safety Award from Greater Philadelphia Business Coalition on Health
