He later founded a hospital in a wood frame house in Chicago where he carried in his arms the hospital's first patient on June 12, 1866.
Their ministry to the United States began in 1866, when Brother Bonaventure Thelen, C.F.A., arrived in New York from Germany.
Back in 1866, the first Alexian Brother arrived in Chicago to expand the religious order's health-care ministry in America.
In 1868, the growing community and health needs spurred the construction of a 70-bed hospital, which was later destroyed by the Chicago fire and rebuilt.
From the time of their arrival in Dakota Territory in 1878, the Benedictine Sisters have responded to the needs of the people, first for educating children and then in caring for the sick.
In 1878, it moved to South Jefferson, following the expansion of the city out into the new German American streetcar suburbs.
The sisters were asked, in 1885, to open the first hospital in Dakota Territory, which came to be known as St Alexius Hospital.
Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights had opened in December of 1959 but it was no closer and our doctor was not on staff there.
St Alexius Hospital opened in 1966 and soon became the present-day Alexian Brothers Medical Center, at 800 Biesterfield Rd.
The doors opened on September 6, 1979 to a six story twin tower 356 bed hospital on Barrington Road just south of Higgins Road.
It was sold to Humana Inc. and became Suburban Medical Center Hospital of Hoffman Estates, then in 1983 the name became Humana Hospital.
When Bonaventure House opened its doors in March of 1989, the facility was neither hospital nor hospice.
In 1993 the name changed again to Hoffman Estates Medical Center.
In 1999 Alexian Brothers Health System purchased the hospital and changed the name to St Alexius Hospital.
With the opening of the beautiful Woman’s & Children’s Hospital in April of 2013, the St Alexius Medical Campus is a dream come true for all of us.
