Metro Credit Union company history timeline

1962

In 1962, Charlotte’s first traffic engineer, Herman J. Hoose, Charlotte Metro was originally named Charlotte City Employees Credit Union.

1973

METRO Federal Credit Union was initially organized and chartered by municipal employees of Arlington Heights and Mount Prospect, Illinois in June 1973.

1983

In 1983, membership was expanded from Charlotte city employees to include the Charlotte transit and local housing authority, prompting a name change to Charlotte City Credit Union.

1985

It wasn’t until September of 1985 that the credit union received permission to change its name to METRO Federal Credit Union when it expanded beyond its initial sponsor to over 50 Sponsoring Employer Groups.

Also in 1985, Charlotte City Employees Credit Union merged with Mecklenburg County Credit Union, which added Carolinas Medical Center employees, bringing total membership to nearly 8,500.

2015

In 2015, Charlotte Metro’s request to expand its field of membership to 9 additional counties was approved.

2019

Up until the beginning of 2019, METRO served the employees and families of approximately 60 public employers including municipalities (village, town, or city), public libraries, park districts, school districts, and related governmental organizations in Cook, Dupage, Kane, and Lake counties.

2021

And finally – in 2021 – Charlotte Metro merged with Premier Federal Credit Union, growing our organization to over 93,000 members.
