Metro New York company history timeline

2009

The R-46s were in service only 15 months, and when purchased, their expected service life would be until 2009.

2011

27, 2011, the MTA temporarily shut down the subway in anticipation of Hurricane Irene, marking the first weather-related shutdown in the subway's history.

2012

And in 2012, the FASTRACK program was introduced to improve the quality and timeliness of subway repair by shutting down parts of a line over consecutive weeknights.

2013

2013 GBFB launches its Capacity Building Grant program to further support hunger-relief partners across Eastern Massachusetts.

2015

The 7 line extension, a capital construction project tied to the redevelopment of Hudson Yards, opened in 2015, connecting Manhattan’s far west side to the rest of the subway.

2017

Problems that were years in the making—namely the effect of deferred maintenance on an aging system, and political leaders diverting funds away from the MTA—came to a head in 2017, when service began to get measurably worse, leading to regularly extended travel times and overly crowded trains.

Rise and Shine Massachusetts, a statewide coalition led by GBFB, was instrumental in advocating for the bill since it was originally introduced in 2017.

2018

2018 Formation of the Hunger to Health Collaboratory, a cross-sector collaboration between leaders, including GBFB, dedicated to reducing the health consequences of hunger.

Originally, three separate transit systems operated their own subway lines; they merged in the 1940s (more on that later), but after mismanagement, NYCT was created in 1953 to oversee the day-to-day business of the subway. It still does that to this day, along with managing larger programs like Fast Forward (we’ll get to that in a bit). Andy Byford is currently the president of NYCT, having assumed the post at the beginning of 2018.

2019

Another wrench was thrown into the MTA’s short-terms plans at the beginning of 2019, when Cuomo deemed the L train shutdown plans unnecessary, and proceeded with a new plan to fix the tunnel without stopping service.

2020

Now, the MTA says the project is ahead of schedule (and claims it’s under budget), and will be wrapping up by the spring of 2020.

2020 GBFB distributes more than 100 million pounds of food in the calendar year for the first time in its history to meet the historic demand for food as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

2021

2021 GBFB distributes its 1 billionth pound of food in its history.

As of 2021, the T is the largest American transit agency to use electricity that is 100% produced from renewable sources.

2022

But the MTA never really recovered financially; the agency is expected to carry $1 billion in debt by 2022.
