1923

Joseph H. Corwin moved to California from Sioux City, Iowa and founded the Company in 1923 with one theatre, the Broadway, in downtown Los Angeles.

1931

In 1931, Red rode out of Cincinnati determined to seek his fortune in Hollywood by landing a career in the world of talking pictures.

1933

In 1931, Red rode out of Cincinnati determined to seek his fortune in Hollywood by landing a career in the world of talking pictures. It was 1933 when Red opened the first Harkins Theatre, The State Theatre in Tempe.

1940

By 1940 Red built his dream movie house, the College Theatre (today's Valley Art). The College Theatre was full of fantastic innovations and set a new standard for theaters and established a Harkins tradition of employing the latest technology to constantly improve the moviegoing experience.

1950

Metropolitan's largest area of concentration is in Santa Barbara County, where it has operated since 1950.

1973

In 1973, artist Zaro Weil and educator Lynn Rubright both felt that impulse.

2003

In September 2003, the Company formed Metro/Rocky Mountain Cinemas which operate state-of-the-art cinemas in ski resort areas of the Western United States that include Aspen, Colorado; Loveland, Colorado; Steamboat Springs, Colorado; Park City, Utah; and Hailey, Idaho.

2020

2020Metro Theater Company’s production of The Girl Who Swallowed a Cactus will be performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC and at the New Visions/New Voices Festival 2020 in partnership with Theatre for Young Audiences/USA.
