Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority company history timeline

1987

A third shift was added in 1987 with the establishment of the Authority.

1989

In 1989, the department purchased a Ford E350/Yankee Coach medic unit.

1990

Several new cargo buildings were added throughout the mid 1990's to meet the double-digit growth in cargo flying through the airport.

In 1990, the department acquired a Pierce Arrow 1500 gpm engine, designated Engine-62, and later Rescue Engine-327.

1991

The construction also added a new International Arrivals Building in 1991, improved flight and baggage information display systems, new roadways and overpasses, new aircraft gates and aprons for additional aircraft parking, taxiway and runway improvements.

1991 saw the advent of truck service at National with the purchase of a Pierce Arrow 1500 gpm 75’ rear mount aerial.

1996

The Terminal was expanded in accordance with the original Saarinen design in 1996.

1998

On February 6, 1998, President Bill Clinton signed into law an act passed by Congress which officially changed the name of Washington National Airport to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

In 1998, completion of the first permanent concourse (Concourse B) was completed with 442,000 square feet to serve 20 aircraft positions.

2000

In the summer of 2000, the Airports Authority launched the Dulles Development Program (D2) taking Dulles closer to its full potential.

2008

On November 1, 2008, the Commonwealth of Virginia transferred the daily operation, maintenance and control of the Dulles Toll Road to the Airports Authority.

2010

New facilities completed in the D2 program included a new airport traffic control tower, expanded airline gates, a fourth runway and the AeroTrain system--which opened in 2010.

2014

In 2014, Reagan National reached a record of 22.4 million annual passengers.

In 2014, the renovation of Terminal A was completed, adding new lighting, new floors and an expanded security mezzanine area.
