Miami Jewish Health company history timeline

1940

The Jewish Home for the Aged (now Miami Jewish Health Systems) began in 1940.

The skyline of Miami Beach has changed from the day the first “skyscraper” went up in 1940.

Since 1940, Miami Jewish Health has been a pioneer in geriatric care, growing to become an internationally renowned leader in healthcare.

1960

Beginning in 1960, with Fidel Castro's takeover of Cuba, a large number of displaced Cuban Jews ("Jubans") made their way to the Miami area, and founded several temples including Miami Beach's Cuban-Hebrew Synagogue.

1974

The Rosomoff Comprehensive Rehabilitation Center, established in 1974 to treat patients with complex and chronic pain, moves to the Miami Jewish Health campus.

1980

Even with the Cuban influx, however, the Jewish population of greater Miami has been in decline since the late 1980's, many people moving to Broward and Palm Beach Counties, south Palm Beach County now having the fastest growing Jewish population in America.

1995

One congregation on South Beach sold its historic properties to the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU, which opened in 1995 to collect, preserve and interpret the 250-year Jewish experience in Florida.
