RESPONSIBILITIES: The paralegal will assist attorneys with their cases, will participate in office-wide projects and client services, and will eventually handle some cases on their own as a DOJ-accredited representative. Paralegals who were previously DOJ-accredited or had DOJ-accreditation applications pending will be expected to resubmit their applications as soon as possible after hire. QUALIFICATIONS: An associate's degree or commensurate professional experience is required; a bachelor's degree is preferred. This position requires a high level of Spanish proficiency, as our paralegals must be able to have effective, nuanced conversations (very often with children) about complicated legal processes and systems. Applicants must possess excellent communication, collaboration, analytical, and problem‐solving skills as well as a demonstrated commitment to protecting the rights of immigrants or other persons in poverty. Candidate must be detail-oriented with strong organizational skills. Candidate must be proficient with major software and web services, including Word, Excel, G Suite, and have access to a reliable internet connection if they intend to work remotely some of the time. Applicants who have experience, especially related to immigration and poverty, will receive priority. Prior experience with immigration law preferred. RESPONSIBILITIES: The Assistant State Long Term Care Ombudsman (ASLTCO) is a full time position and will provide critically important representation of the program and those we serve through various activities and duties. The ASLTCO through systemic advocacy will identify, monitor, and respond to legislative and regulatory changes with the potential to positively or negatively impact long term care residents including preparing written responses to and providing testimony on proposed changes. The ASLTCO may work in collaboration with the MLTCOP Systemic Advocacy Attorney on projects of shared interest to the MLTCOP. At the direction of the State Long Term Care Ombudsman, the ASLCO will represent the program on task forces, boards, advisory committees and other public forums and collaborate with allies on issues affecting those served by the MLTCOP. The ASLTCO will provide support and coordination to a state-wide resident council including preparing meeting notices, hosting virtual meetings, and offering support to facilitate the meetings. At the direction of the council, the ASLTCO may coordinate guest speakers for council meetings, arrange for members to provide testimony or feedback on legislation or proposed policy changes, or connect council members with the media for special interest stories or investigative reports. The ASLTCO will coordinate the MLTCOP culture change efforts through monthly meetings of interested residents, providers, ombudsmen, surveyors, and other parties. This will include at a minimum the development of the agenda, coordination with guest speakers, maintenance of minutes from the meetings, and distribution of best practices identified by the culture change members. The ASLTCO will investigate concerns brought before the program related to local or volunteer ombudsmen in accordance with program policies and procedures.     POSITION: Farmworker Legal Services (FLS) is seeking a supervising attorney with immigrant workers rights experience to join its dynamic and committed litigation team working directly with migrant and seasonal agricultural workers and community groups to dismantle systems that perpetuate poverty and injustice. The supervising attorney will work closely with FLS attorneys, staff, and other providers to develop and pursue affirmative systemic litigation and community outreach and ensure high quality representation of farmworkers. The supervising attorney will handle cases, provide supervisory support to team members, and assist in directing the legal work of FLS. Ideally, the supervising attorney will be based out of our Kalamazoo office with a flexible remote work schedule option. DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: Farmworker Legal Services (FLS) is a growing and nationally recognized non-profit law office and the statewide division of the Michigan Advocacy Program (MAP) that fights for justice and dignity alongside the farmworker community through our systemic, multi-forum legal advocacy, community engagement, and direct legal representation of farmworkers in their civil legal matters. FLS currently has 7 permanent staff and 7 summer seasonal advocates based out of our Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, and Ypsilanti (Ann Arbor area) offices. FLS provides a full range of civil legal services to Michigans eligible population of migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their dependents and prioritize cases including wage theft, trafficking, discrimination, sexual harassment, workplace health and safety, housing, civil rights, and labor-based immigration relief. MAP works to advance the safety, independence, and economic stability of those most affected by poverty, racism, and other structurally oppressive systems by increasing access to justice and working for systemic solutions. MAP has provided civil legal aid for those unable to afford an attorney for more than 50 years, serving 13 counties through five legal aid offices and managing 6 statewide programs that serve farmworkers (Farmworker Legal Services), immigrant communities (Michigan Immigrant Rights Center), vulnerable older adults (Michigan Elder Justice Initiative), victims of domestic violence and elder abuse (Crime Victims Legal Assistance Program), legal aid advocates through research and training support (Michigan Poverty Law Program), and self-represented litigants (Michigan Legal Help Program). MAP has a staff of about 220 people in offices in Battle Creek, Detroit, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Lansing, Grand Rapids, Monroe, and Ypsilanti. RESPONSIBILITIES: The Assistant State Long Term Care Ombudsman (ASLTCO) is a full time position and will provide critically important representation of the program and those we serve through various activities and duties. The ASLTCO through systemic advocacy will identify, monitor, and respond to legislative and regulatory changes with the potential to positively or negatively impact long term care residents including preparing written responses to and providing testimony on proposed changes. The ASLTCO may work in collaboration with the MLTCOP Systemic Advocacy Attorney on projects of shared interest to the MLTCOP. At the direction of the State Long Term Care Ombudsman, the ASLCO will represent the program on task forces, boards, advisory committees and other public forums and collaborate with allies on issues affecting those served by the MLTCOP. The ASLTCO will provide support and coordination to a state-wide resident council including preparing meeting notices, hosting virtual meetings, and offering support to facilitate the meetings. At the direction of the council, the ASLTCO may coordinate guest speakers for council meetings, arrange for members to provide testimony or feedback on legislation or proposed policy changes, or connect council members with the media for special interest stories or investigative reports. The ASLTCO will coordinate the MLTCOP culture change efforts through monthly meetings of interested residents, providers, ombudsmen, surveyors, and other parties.
