Michigan International Speedway company history timeline

1968

The track opened in 1968 with a total capacity of 25,000 seats.

1969

Yarborough won the first NASCAR-sanctioned race at MIS when he captured the Motor State 500 on June 15, 1969, in the No.

1971

Bobby Allison dominated the 1971 races, winning the Motor State 400 in June and the Yankee 400 in August.

The company began to leak money from the various failed operations and was forced to file for bankruptcy in 1971.

1972

In 1972, Roger Penske purchased the speedway for an estimated $2 million.

Rusty Wallace came from two laps down to win the June 26, 1988 Miller High Life 400, beating out Bill Elliott, the track’s most dominant driver of that era.

1990

Four of his wins came in a Jack Roush Ford, including his first in the 1990 Champion Spark Plug 400 on Aug.

1991

He won again in 1991, then stunk up the show in the June Miller Genuine Draft 400 by leading 158 of the 200 laps.

1995

1996

The 40 trams that are used at MIS to bring fans from the parking lots to the track were the same trams used at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.

2006

For wine and beer connoisseurs the annual Wine and Beer Festival has been a big hit at MIS since its debut in 2010.

MIS is NASCAR’s fastest racetrack! MIS is superfast due to the repave in 2012 and long straightaways on the track that let drivers reach their highest speeds.

2013

2015

2015 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch is the honorary president of the MIS Kids Club!

2016

In 2016, Daniel Suarez won the NASCAR XFINITY Series race at MIS! It was the first time a NASCAR national touring series event was won by a driver born in Mexico.

2017

NASCAR driver Kyle Larson holds his trophy after winning the Pure Michigan 400 at MIS in August 2017.

2018

In 2019 the speedway held its very first MIS Backyard Hockey Tournament to promote and develop youth hockey in and around the surrounding regions.
